Read the email again, they don't stipulate what the £500 goodwill payment is to be used for. Were you asked for your bank details to send a payment to?

This is good news, at least they are willing to help sort out to some extent, there hopefully will be some alarms which are phone activated which will do away with an extra key fob - more research.

I had a reply this morning asking for V5c confirmation that I am the owner.
The thing is that like you, I'm not sure I want an aftermarket alarm. I want a Toyota (Subaru) OEM one. It's a failing of supplying what was ordered and the compensation for that - not the fact that it needs an alarm. Failure to supply what was contracted. That's what the compensation is for?

Exactly. Toyota just need to accept this, compensate and move on. Otherwise people should just waste Toyota time and money by making claims via the Ombudsman.
The V5 which specifically states that it's not a proof of ownership?
I'm too tired to fight. I'll see if I can find a decent aftermarket solution and if I can, maybe I'll get it fitted and claim for it. But if not, I'm just going to live without it as I have done.

Looking at 3rd party alarms, they are quite difficult to come by as I presume most vehicles now come with alarms compared to the market years ago.
Reading the thread the possibilities are a cobra alarm or the ghost immobiliser.
Ghost immobiliser sounds tempting but there wouldn't be an audible alarm.
I'm jumping the gun though as not had a response yet.

If I hadn't already gone down the 'Ghost' route when I first got the car (because I was transferring it across between vehicles), I would have dropped an enquiry to 'Pandora'. They do Thatcham approved alarms. How about trying them?
When Toyota replied to me about the £500 reimbursement email for an alarm install I did enquire about the Ghost immobiliser system, to which they declined (it's not exactly an alarm, I suppose). I'll be getting the Ghost at some point though, quite like the idea. Would be interested to hear from you if the install / use of it on the GR is all okay

Install took around an hour and was completed whilst I waited. I was only charged £100 to install it on the GR86 (Autowatch recommend £250), because I used the same place I’d bought/installed on my previous Kona N, so they gave me a discount. If it had been a new install (at £499 RRP) I wouldn’t have bothered with the Ghost; the GR86 has such a primitive CanBus that it limits what can be achieved with the Ghost alone (I’ll not discuss further publicly here due to sensitivity and security, but you can DM me if you need further info). Although expensive (£700+??) I felt that the Pandora system might have offered a better solution, but I never investigated further having got the Ghost transferred across and a Tracker installed early on.Would be interested to hear from you if the install / use of it on the GR is all okay
That aside, the Ghost is super easy to use with the GR86, especially with the App, and gives you confidence that it can’t be taken by nefarious means such as key cloning etc.

Someone who enquired about one posted that only four buttons can be used, reducing the number of possible codes. Probably not a huge concern, as the idea is nobody knows it’s there, the specific buttons is not public information, and even the shortest code length (4) has 256 combinations. I appreciate it’s not possible for many, but I now keep my car in my garage to remove any possibility of theft by Hanoi style burglary. All of the property damage up to the point of trying to start the engine would still happen, regardless of security systems installed on the car.
Away from home the types of theft that a Ghost prevents are much less likely (keyless repeater, key theft), so my preference would be the alarm that was promised. I’m not willing to get a third party alarm installed unless it could be done without requiring another fob, so will likely push for compensation if they ever get back to me.

If a thief is determined to take a car they will, no matter what the ‘security’. My detailer had his 911 GT3RS and his wife’s Audi RS3 taken after a targeted break in, which is a scary thought if anyone had been home. Thankfully a GR86 isn’t much of a gangland getaway car, so it’s unlikely to be stolen for a future bank robbery… or a trip to Ikea

Given it wouldn’t outrun a modestly endowed recent automatic diesel let alone a common or garden EV in a straight line you’re not wrong.

I imagine they goodwill paid a few out at £500 but as soon as the tsunami of requests came in they realised the storm of excrement they'd inadvertently created. Shockingly, owners of enthusiast cars speak to each other, who'd have thought!
