GR86 Tyres on Stock Wheels

I’ve ran MPS4’s on the MX5 and just changed to Goodyear F1 6’s and already can hear the difference in reduced road noise. Interestingly both the MX5 and GR are fitted with stretched tyre profiles out of the factory.
Trying to find tyres that are not XL is getting increasingly difficult, hardly surprising with the amount of heavy blob mobiles that everyone seeming wants to drive now.

I've got experience of switching from PS4 to PS5 on my 993.

A totally different car of course but my experience is that the PS5 sidewalls feel softer on fast direction changes to the extent that it doesn't inspire as much confidence as the older tyre. I find myself having to use higher pressures than before to get back the confidence.

The new tyres are the exact same spec as the old ones so my assumption is the newer tyre has been designed more with comfort in mind.

Another point is that both PS4 and PS5 have very little road noise compared to other tyres I had used over the years so it's a surprise they are so loud on the 86.
Thanks. I’m getting new PS5 onto the 86 and the 9000mile PS4 will go onto spare wheels for RX-8 for road and/or cold track days. Nice 993 I’ve a Cayman S not been brave enough to TrackDay Cayman or GR.

I have just put 225/40/18 Conti Sport 7's on all four corners. One thing I have noticed is it is a lot harder to get the back end out now and the grip levels are a lot higher before it will let go.

Not quite as sharp as the 215's before but I think that is more to do with the increased grip than anything else. As in the sidewall will let go before the grip whereas the PS4 was the opposite.

Still messing about with tyre pressures but seems a very good tyre!

Nice...did you find a better deal on those that the Goodyears?

Regarding this, quite a few models of tyre that aren't XL are in fact identical to their XL counterpart, so I wouldn't worry about it. They're often all made to the XL standard, the price difference is most likely reflective of how much stock they have. Also, performance tyres tend to come with a stiffer than normal sidewall anyway. Best just to look up reviews with regard to NVH and subjective handling to see whether they'll be too stiff.

These things stick like sh*t to a rug. I've ran them for the last year in that size and their limits just are not accessible on the public roads.

In the wet they're mind bendingly good though - for anyone looking for that type of security and keeping sharp with handling I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them.

I've like and have gone with Michelin pilot sport 5 (PS5). In 250 miles I find them better across the board to the PS4. More comfortable too despite be extra load (XL), go figure.

Not had to change tyres on the GR yet but when I went from PS4 to PS5 in my last car (Kia Stinger 3.3) the grip and comfort seemed on par but they upped the durability massively. For reference with the exact same driving style and commutes over the years in the rears I only got 13k out the Continental Sport Contact 5, 17.5k out the PS4 and when I traded it in I was 18.5k in on the PS5 and they were still at 5mm.

@Goatwidcoat Wow, longer life, that is good to know. Thanks. I took PS4 off at 10k miles they were not done, as i put them on my RX-8 spare wheels for winter. Good to know the PS5 will last longer on GR.

I'm starting to look for new tires for the GR86 now the tread is starting to drop down below 3mm. I found that the PS4s were good however I did find the road noise particularly annoying. So I'm torn between the Conti SC 7's and the Good Year ASY 6's.

Mine is used exclusively on road, I imagine that between the two grip is pretty good, but am I correct to assume that the Good Year's are better for road noise? Or is there another tire that I should look into that I have missed?

I’ve got the SC 7s and have 0 complaints. Road noise is the same as the PS4s but honestly I always have music on so barely notice it anyway 😂

Not on the GR but got a set of the goodyears on a GT86 and they're a step up from the PS4 they replaced. Our road is mostly leaves and mud at the minute and the goodyears have had no issues with grip where the PS4 struggled

I have asy 6 on my summer wheels. Theyre great, and i found them quieter than the stock wheels with MPS4, but they are 245/40/17 so its probably not a fair comparrison.

The SC7 is a tier above the asy6.

Asy 6 is UHP- Ultra high performance
SC7 is UUHP- Ultra Ultra high performance

This isnt a joke, they just added another ultra on. Its the same tier difference between mps4 and mps4s.

the SC7 will perform better but might be a little noisier. It should be the more expensive tyre (extra ultra), but this might not be the case. My brother just went for SC7 over asy6 on his TT ( 😖 ) purely because they were significantly cheaper.

I changed to Michelin PS5. Great grip wet or dry. Quieter a tad and despite sidewalls being XL (Extra Load) the ride is minutely better.

How do you find them pressure wise? I've got a set on a Yaris and all 4 go up 3 or 4psi with normal road driving from their cold pressures.
I run them like the Michelins at 2.2bar cold and they settle at 2.4bar warm. If I left them at 2.4 cold which the sticker says they climb too high.
