GR86 Turbo / Supercharger

Think he was referring to the 270hp. It's most likely got no GPF or cats.

But he replied to my "But I wouldn't mind another 20 or 30 hp." That's as low as 250hp.

I'm not desperate for a change, but I plan to keep the car long term, and I'd be interested if there's something something to be gained without affecting reliability.

Emailed Harrop regarding the price of a kit delivered to the UK and they said to contact Abbey Motorsport.

Just had a response from Abbey Motorsport. They said they're still in sorting out the mapping and will get back to me with more info next week.

Intrigued to hear what the pricing will be. Hopefully it'll be something half reasonable and not double the price of the kit on the Gen 1.

adding any power affects possibly reliability. with N/A its good to compare what can be done with hotter cams /headwork vs. supercharging.

Another turbo kit being developed by the Aussies. Looks very well made from the video. there's a bit of an intro montage for about 1 min at the start of the video you can skip.

Pretty good video on the SME turbo kit. I'm 85% sure i'll be going for a Harrop supercharger next spring, this has got me a little tempted though.

The Harrop kit comes with an uprated fuel pump and Abbey are offering a package including ECUTEK and tuning. on the whole, you dont have to change much from OEM, including the emissions gubbins.

This SME turbo kit would have a much higher performance ceiing for upgrading in the future, but It would most likely cost quite a bit more up front and would require a custom front pipe with a cat and GPF to remain 100% emissions legal. It does look and sound amazing though.

Yes those two are the best options, it is a real shame the Harrop doesn't make nice noise like the turbo can.
The other to keep an eye if it is ever released its the jackson racing supercharger.
In terms of taking it to the track, I haven't seen many videos of supercharged cars.
This guy has a Harrop and takes it to the track.

Turbo sounds

The SME kit looks like something that fits the bill for me. I wonder how much the ECUTEK and mapping will cost on top?

SME said they could supply a custom kit with a catalyzer.
I do wonder if it somehow turns out cheaper to get one custom made locally

I'm not sure. They work in partnership with PVS in Aus for tuning, so you might be able to get the ecutek and have them do it remotely, or see if they can supply a base map for your tuner of choice to start with. I'd imagine £500-1000.

Here's my basket on the SME website. 😆 There is a catted centre section. But as Blue said it might be more cost efficient to get it made up locally.

The Harrop comes with an uprated fuel pump as they were running out of fuel, still with some headroom on the injectors when tubibg theirs, so you could well get more out of the standard injectors with just a fuel pump upgrade if you went for the SME kit.

I need me some more power!

PS - I assume you've got a manual, and they say it won't handle the power of that turbo

If you're just using the kit with the standard fuel system - as it is in this video - then the manual should hold up OK. I imagine the clutch life will be significantly reduced though.

They use a very large turbo for the kit, as they're trying to avoid excessive low down torque which would put a lot of stress on the engine. There is a LOT of headroom with that turbo - it would deffo require gearbox strengthening if you started to get more out of it.

How much would this cost, and how much power increase would you expect?
Harrop claim an increase in their development car from 215hp to 300hp at the hubs. Drive in drive out fit and tune I'd guess around £10k. You could save a bit of cash doing some work yourself but the Harrop kit isn't cheap.

I like the look ofm the Harrop kit, which looks very similar to the cosworth one on the GT86 - I've had a friend running that for years at about 300 bhp, uncluding many track days and its been fine. - I can't keep up with it in my GR86.

I have a TRD supercharger for the Tundra 2UZ that I'll be fitting to my 1UZ that I fitted to my Hilux at some point. I'll see how that goes first!
