GR Yaris Time for new brakes

New discs, pads and titanium shims fitted. Bedding-in was a bit tricky in -5°, but the instructions from EBC were pretty simple and I've now done a couple of hundred km and they look to be working well.

Pedal is nicely firm, although that comparing with the end-of-life discs/pads I had on before. Next changes is braided lines and a full fluid change.

Frustrating having the temperatures so low at the moment, means I can't really get out and hammer them!

Forgot to add that I measured the old discs and they were 9.7kg on my crappy bathroom scales and worn to 26mm, which aligns roughly with what others have said. I reckon new they would have been 10kg on these scales at least.

So I’m due new brakes and looking at the options. Pads are shot, but apparently the discs still have some life left in them. I'll measure them (technician "forgot" to write down the thickness ) and see, but if they've only got a few mm left I will just do them all in one go.

What are the options for discs then?

TypeCostNotes
OEM££Easy to get hold of
Girodisc£££2-piece floating, lighter
EBC£/££2-piece floating, lighter
Endless££££2-piece, lighter
Godspeed£2-piece, lighter

An added complication is that availability across the EU varies somewhat, so this will probably dictate choice as much as price etc. It seems harder to get hold of Yaris stuff than it should be.

Any more options worth looking at?

Any good EU-based suppliers worth checking out?
you could add also DBA 5000 series into list as it seems to be priced reasonably.

DBA seems to be not so cheap as prices for them are listed as each, ie set costs 1300€ with delivery in EU.
Scara is interesting option with its price to weight scale.
Interested also in EBC discs if they are available for delivery in EU.

That was the case when I ordered. I signed up for alerts when they were back in stock and pretty much straight away got an email saying they were available to order, so I did. Makes sense as the individual discs and pads parts were both in stock.

I guess they don't assign stock for that SKU until someone is interested if their system isn't able to dynamically assign sub-parts?

Tried to order some new brake pads from Toyota. Waiting time for the order is at least one month...
So aftermarket seems the way to go forward here.

A semi-review of the EBC RP-1 pads after about 4,000 km.

They are working admirably well, and while I don’t think they create any more dust than the OEM ones, they do seem to leave a layer of very hard deposits on the wheels which is very difficult/impossible to remove.

Running a finger round the flat part of the inside of the rim feels like sandpaper, which I never had with the OEM pads.

The normal ‘goes purple’ wheel wash barely touched it. I’ll have a go at removing it again sometime, leave it on longer and give it more of a scrub, but if I can’t get rid of it I’ll probably end up changing back, keep these for actual track time.

After battering around the Pyrenees and Alps for a fortnight, I can confirm this setup is absolutely mega, with none of the confidence-sapping transient juddering I got last year with the stock discs and pads one your were getting properly on it. That didn't ultimately affect the braking performance, and they lasted well and never actually faded, but it never felt nice as you worked through it.

No such problems this time, just bite for days and hauling the car up time and again with beautiful modulation.

I blitzed the front wheels with cleaner and brush and seemed to get more of the pad deposits off. Will take the wheels off sometime and give them a proper going over to get them sparkling again (I hope!).

Just an update on the EBC RP-1 pads.

I've just changed them after 17,000 km, significantly less than the OEM pads which managed 32,000 km. I'll be honest this is a bit disappointing.

They also produce a lot of very aggressive dust which embeds itself in the wheel lacquer.

I get that they are track pads and maybe not ideal for road use, but I've often used quite aggressive pads in my cars and never had such problems in the past. And it's not like they glazed through lack of proper use or anything, they just wore quickly.

So, braking performance
Everything else 😐

Did you perhaps measure disc thickness after 17.000km?
My EBC discs have 45.000km in them and are at 27.1mm so hopefully at half their life...
(Been using EBC blue for 10.000km and OEM afterwards)

have been querying few options now. Endless basic 450€ a piece + freight, and alcon 2-piece 650€ per disc.
I might select alcon as its lighter, even though Endless is high quality item aswell, but alcon offers better serviceability in long term with their changeable friction disc.

You can add SRT for Alcons (2-piece floating, 2.8kg lighter than OEM),

And RTE motorsport for endless discs at least.

both in EU (Finland) and both shops have racing enhtusiasts in team (RTE is Esapekka Lappi's shop and SRT is owned by Kalle Sarlin who used to do circuit racing earlier).
