GR Yaris The Intercooler - Hot Hatch World Cup

Good thread - GTI 205 1.9 for a few years .... Renault Willy 1 (303) for a few years , Citreon Saxo VTS from new for a few years... r53 Mini JCW still going just.... Just love hot hatches. & loved the ones I was lucky enoough to own. Another car I own has the same light switches from the Pug 205's... they still stick like they did 🤣❤ back in 88' in the GTI A lovely reminder. No Brainer for me , the GRY is my Top Shopping Trolley of all time . I will vote ... ( The 205 will come second )Thank you Snappy and HNY to everyone

Looks like the GRY will lose out on this occasion. But then you should only enter a hall of fame after the passing of sufficient time to allow true objective reflection.

The other semi final, starting at 1pm, is the MK1 Golf GTI vs the Delta Integrale, both firm residents of said hall of fame, suspect the GTI will edge it though.

Then 205 vs GTI in the final…

I agree - i was suprised to see the GRY there already which speaks a testimony. I have had previous with a friends VW 1.6 GTI pram when they first came out . It was an epipthany . However never driven an Intergrale ... thats a hero, even if it is a 5 door.

I'm most disappointed not to see the R5GTT in the mix. I had a heavily modified one back in the early 90's when my mates had the 1.9GTI, RS turbo's, Golf GTI's, etc. & we all had many blasts of each others cars. The GR, IMO, is the best hot hatch I've driven since then 👌

So, an upset, the Integrale beat the Golf, so it’s France vs Italy in the final, voting currently very tight…

For me, the Delta loses to the 205 for the same reason as the GR does; it’s not really a hot hatch because they should be affordable, above all.

Wish I'd had a space place to store an Delta Integrale. And the money to afford one. Think I looked about ten years ago as they were a bit of a hero of mine and the most expensive, super well kept one was 40 grand. When I checked a couple of days ago the most expensive one was 175 grand.

I actually have no idea how much one those were new though. Maybe they were more affordable at the time. Haven't been to find a RRP though.

Hard to say with the GR Yaris though. It really is a hot hatch, but also I get your point by saying it's not really the same thing as a regular hot hatch. I doubt the 205 T16 would do much worse in the rankings than the 205 GTI that said. I mean if we look back there obviously were some hatchback homologation specials before (Integrale, 6R4 and 205 GTI) but at least for every hatch there's an RS, Impreza, and 400 Evos. Maybe it was just a slightly strange list

It's hard to really compare I guess, probably a 205 GTI with it's 1984 price of £6245 is about 20k in current year pounds.... Which puts it's nearest current day new competitor as i20n or Fiestas.

Clearly the rarity of the Integrale paid dividends on resale value. That said only about 3% of the 205 GTI sold are on the road today and their valuations aren't super amazing. Having never driven one does make you wonder if it's nostalgia more than anything and how well they hold up today.

My first car was a 205 1.9 GTi. I loved it. I’ve said it before but the GR Yaris, whilst completely different in so many ways, reminded me of that car. I think it’s mainly because I found it ludicrously fast, with a naughty character. The GRY has exactly twice the power (and an extra 370 kg), but the way it slingshots out of corners reminds me of the fun I had in my first car.

My Clio 172 Cup is quicker and better built than the little pug (and that’s no Maybach) but feels slow and fragile now. If I was to get another 205 I’m sure it would feel slower and far shoddier than I remember, and spoil my memories of it. On the other hand, I would never regret the purchase every time I laid eyes on it. I still think its Pininfarina design is one of the most successful hatchbacks of all, and has improved with age.

I also want a ‘Grale. And a Clio Williams.

Strada Abarth 130TC.
Stayed under the radar but I loved mine.
