GR86 Test Drives Email!

Righty ho, lads and lasses... that's both Parts One (#117) and Two (#118) up for you all, in case you're having a sleepless night.

Sorry they go on a bit, but I hope they're useful and let me know if I can answer any other questions.

On the plus side, by the time you've finished reading them both, your GR86 will be ready for collection!

Apology not required. They were both informative and entertaining in equal measure and put some of the recent uk reviews we’ve all be reading to shame. Well written and much appreciated!! 👏

As for the head rests I seem to remember seeing a YouTube review where someone mentioned they can be fully removed and put back in facing the rear of the car which might be an option if it becomes an issue for some. Apparently intentionally designed to be able to do that to accommodate helmet wearing on track days.

I’m hoping I’ll get my test drive this week at some point at Macklin in Glasgow 👍🏻

That's for the great write up and extra time taken to look at the rear seat space! ...I hadn't even considered mpg being an issue, I'll make a note of that on my test drive as well.

Thanks @drz252 my only hope is that i plan to have 2 kids on the passenger side, fingers still crossed 🤞

If your kid in the front seat needs a child's seat then you might want to look at the manual pretty carefully. This is the car's downfall for my use and might mean it ends up being a toy for just me as @drz252 says ...I'll tell the Mrs that at least it's safer than a motorbike, right?!

Thanks @drz252, great write up. Glad to hear the heated seats get warm faster now, will be useful for those early morning drives :D

18mpg though.... ouch. However the engine had 12 miles on it. Let's hope that will improve after break in and an oil change. Most other reviews seem to suggest it's not much worse than its predecessor, so let's not worry too much yet.

Great write up @drz252, my car hasn't even gone into build yet, but I'm going to hassle my dealer for a test drive all the same.

Not needing child seats anymore was one of the reasons i went back to a coupe, all it needs is to be comfortable enough for 2 junior school pickups a week, the family bus can deal with the rest

"... and man will live forevermore, because of Christmas Day"

I did not expect this to be the soundtrack to my first drive in a GR86 when I ordered the car in April. But this is what came on when the radio woke up as I was pulling out from the dealership forecourt this morning, and I suppose I will now always associate the song with this day.

For the benefit of our esteemed colleague Mr. Absent Fox (@Fox on sabbatical), please enjoy some pictures of the silver car with a manual transmission:

Much appreciated @drz252 , and thank you for taking what must have been a significant amount of time to share your comprehensive findings in such a well-constructed way.

Christmas songs on the radio in November though - get in the sea with you, broadcasters, for such f**kery.

About the petrol, the manual says put 98 in, but it also says you can use 95 "with no detriment to engine durability or driveability" :)

In my experience of new Toyotas, it takes about 2000-3000 miles before the engine has properly loosened up, so I would see what the economy is like at that point. I usually run in the engines, keeping below 4000rpm maybe for the first 600-1000 miles.

Top posts @drz252 - thanks for taking the time, and good to read a review from a tall guy✌️(how was the steering wheel reach btw - did it telescope out enough for z knees? same as GT86??)
18mpg though - sheeeet… that’s worse than my old timey cars with big webers!! What’ll it be when we’re pressing on - eek…

Thanks @drz252 for taking the time to do the review and take the photos. Always like to see a silver one.👍

Internal photos are handy to see too and whilst a bit gutted about what you say about the rear seats, I'm still in denial and will have to see for myself when I test drive (must try to organise in the next week or two). We have 4 kids and whilst my own car generally only sees me, or 1 or 2 people in it, I was hoping that simple school pickups or running teenagers a couple of miles into town would be doable. Now I'm not so sure. We will see.

I hope fuel consumption is a bit better than what you experienced. My general usage is a) shorter local trips in running the kids around and b road blasts where I'm sure it will be crap which I'm not too bothered about as this is relatively little of my mileage. And b) long drives across the country for work where I tend to just cruise at a sensible speed on dual carriageways and motorways. I really hope I can stretch it out 35+ on these even though I get paid back my mileage. 🤞

Yep thank for that post. Nice to see some silver photos, definitely think I've gone for the right colour for me there

Pavement is kinda... business lease grey sort of thing. And cant be arsed with the other colours. I quite like the black/silver combination.

Not liking the descriptions of the linier power delivery at all, that says to me its a flat power curve and there's no fireworks up toward the limiter? I want more from an engine if I'm honest - hankering after another Integra DC5 currently. Dimming mirror, parking sensors and camera is disappointing.

Excellent post @drz252, informative and witty too! That mpg is worse than my GRY, but I can only assume it will get better once the engine is run in a bit. The camera looks like the same one in my GRY which is awful in terms of resolution, but it gets the job done.

I'm in a similar situation, I need to be able to fit a couple of teenagers in the car on occasion. As long as I can squeeze them in one behind the other on the passenger side that will suffice.

Thanks for taking the time to post that up, very informative. That mpg though! That's big engined v8/12 territory. Hope it's just because it's not run in.
Non dimming mirror seems a bit of a cheap cop out and if the parking camera is poor resolution during the day it's going to be useless at night, I'm already on ebay looking at parking sensors that don't need holes drilling :p

Yes, I think if I can do that it will do for me too.
