Hi! I didn't unfortunately, but the car goes in for safety check this week. Will ask Toyota to disable them for me :)

Dealership kindly disabled both ESE and ANC.

The Powerbass speakers sound so much clearer now, highly recommend doing this if you've changed the speakers ;)

We seem to have picked up a few new members in Luxembourg and Germany recently, so bumping this for anyone in the vicinity who wants the ESE deactivated etc.

I'm in Lux, near the German border, but happy to travel and meet halfway. Any excuse for a run out on on a Sunday! :D
 
Do we have a "explanation of abbreviations" FAQ thread somewhere? I could not find it.

ESE is "Electronic Sound Enhancement" and ANC is "Active Noise Control"? What is the difference in function between the two? And they cannot be controlled in the standard menus but you need a third party ODB software/access for it?

If I could, I would like to deactivate the Emergency Brake Hazard Lights (EBHL???) on purpose when I am on a joyride.
 
Yes, you need an ODB reader to change the ESE and ANC settings, which is completely daft.

ESE is just the ‘fake engine noise’ which I find ridiculous.

ANC is a little more complicated. I presume it seeks to cancel out some of the more annoying harmonics and frequencies in the cabin.

The effect is hard to judge as it is fairly subtle and you’d need to enable and disable it and drive the stretch of road at the same pace etc. to compare ON vs. OFF.

Suffice to say, it seems to assume the stock intake, exhaust, audio system etc. and there are many reports of it making things markedly worse after one or more of those has been changed, particularly the audio system as the standard system seems to have a very unusual frequency response.

My recommendation? ESE off, ANC on, unless you’ve changed any of the above components.

And no, it doesn’t seem that anyone has yet found a way to disable the hazard flashing under braking, short of going the MoTeC/Syvecs route. It’s certainly not exposed in Carista.

I assume that if you're only upgrading the speakers (rather than the audio system) this doesn't mess things up?

No, different speakers will inevitably have a different response, impedance curve etc. to standard.

The ANC has no way of knowing or compensating for this, meaning the ‘anti’ waveform it adds to the speaker output will probably be ‘wrong’ and is likely to cause all sorts of weirdness.

Thought I'd post on a populated thread, has anyone come across carista saying car not responding?

It reads the basic obd data like revs, voltage etc but won't let me customise anything?

This is with an obd link adaptor, not the official one but it's an option when connecting to the car
 
Sorted it, for anyone who finds this, obd adapter needed firmware up date and disconnected all other bluetooh devices and it worked
 
I had a problem with a non-carista OBD (OBDlink) failing part way through reading faults on a Golf, but have since "upgraded" to the Carista one and it's worked fine since
