Before I spend £500-1000 just to get some more noise, I've thought about buying another standard exhaust and modifying it. £50 can buy a decent condition original cat back, and the easy option would be to replace the middle silencer with a straight through pipe. Would that give the desired effect though? Or is most of the silencing done by the back box?

My little nephew made his own exhaust on his S3 and I would say that if you or someone you knew was a capable welder, it would be the obvious way to go. I dare say it would have to make it slightly louder.

I did an apprenticeship as a fabricator welder, and I used to be a fabricator at Lola cars, but that was decades ago. So I'd just pay a mate to weld it for me. I've read the standard cat back is lighter than some aftermarket exhausts too.

I read something about a rear box being cut open, and gutted. Supposedly that made more noise, but it would involve some mucking around to weld inside and close it up again. There are systems around for £5-600 but if the boxes are made of tinfoil they wont last long.

To be honest if it were the exhaust tips that bothered you then yes. If you want more noise I would buy a gpf back exhaust. Some exhausts out there can sound really nice but can drone like hell around 2300-2500 rpm……60 on a motorway basically. It’s not a cheap car so invest a bit in the exhaust and you won’t regret it. Whifbitz gpf back are very reasonable for the quality. Cobra is good too. I picked up a titanium one and whilst more the great thing is that it does not tarnish or corrode at all.

interested in this topic too... mainly because:
-cost;
-oem stealth look, last thing we want here (Norway...) is to fail MOT because an aftermarket exhaust :-(
-mild noise levels increase (ev. reduced droning chances)...
PS. the puny looks of the original exhaust tips can be improved a by painting black the inner lining of the tips ;-)
and to be honest, if not because the MOT trouble, a Titanium aftermarket cat/gpf-back would be my choice - just the weight reduction would be worthy I think.

I thought about this as an option a while ago but ended up getting a Fujitsubo GPF back system. Not badly priced & not much louder than stock when inside the car. The build quality is great & the tail pipes fill out the visual aspect.
The OEM exhaust’s small mid silencer is a volume control, I can’t see why it would change the overall frequency/tone/resonance if you were to cut this out & put a piece of pipe in its place. It would in my experience with other cars, turn up the volume a couple of notches.
It seems to me that it’s the GPF that creates the hoover-like restrictive, muffled whooshing sound as some have mentioned previously.
I think you should go with your head & get a cheap OEM exhaust & try this out. If it’s a little bit more of a noise you desire & if you can do this cheaply, I say go for it! And report back your results
