Good evening !

Did the 25'000 km intermediate oil and filter change some days ago. Now I cutted the filter housing to inspect the filter element and found some black RTV. Engine was never opened, just an additional oil cooler with sandwich plate was installed 10kkm and one regular oil/filter change ago. Debris on the can ground is supposed to be from cutting process. Maybe it's just paranoia: I have the impession to hear a very short "oink" during startup... could be an ABS check or something different.

I'm now concered that the oil pickup might be blocked by bigger RTV parts. If I contact my local Toyota dealer probalbly nothing will happen besides the cross reference to the super long warranty.

What would you do? I could borrow a nice endoscope from my employer and inspect the oil pickup. Or should I just drive and enjoy the car?

Regards, Simon

That’s interesting, haven’t seen any reports elsewhere of this issue.
It isn’t ptfe tape from the oil hoses is it ?
Probably tricky getting underneath the pickup with a scope as it’s going to be close to the bottom of the pan but it’s worth a try. Maybe when you do the next oil change.

I’d carry on enjoying the car, I assume Switzerland is 10 year warranty also?

Oil pickup? That's a rather large tube, I doubt there will be a chunk RTV big enough to block that.
Opening up the oil pan to inspect for leftovers just opens a new can of worms, did I/they put too much or too little sealant when refitting it?

The real issue is when the stuff ends up in the small oil channels and blocks supply to bearings. But this should be downstream of the oil filter which did its job stopping the contaminants, no holes in it etc?

Warranty is what it is for.... Unless the additional oil cooler had shit inside? Mods always open up for discussion so proceed being mindful of that...

Yes, we have as well the 10 year warranty here in Switzerland.
Oil cooler installation was done at approx. 16tkm and the car had a regular inspection with 20k. So if there would be some debris from the cooler kit (which I don't think) it would have been removed during the 20k oil and filter change I guess.

At the bottom of the oil pickup usually a mesh is installed. Bigger RTV parts will kept there. Can be seen on the GR86 for example here: GR-ZOO
Maybe there is enough space below the pickup to inspect the mesh trough the oil drain bore with a flexible endoscope. Ours is fitted fith a flexible probe.

Indeed! if it is rtv it blocks the strainer and isn’t uncommon to find something stuck to the strainer on the handful of engines I’ve stripped.
I’ve had a 50/50 success with warranties over the years so don’t really tend to rely on them. Other experiences may differ and I don’t remember what happened with the GR86s that had the engines destroyed with this issue as I’ve not owned one.
OP is wise to be concerned in my view and appears to know what the implications are.

haven't seen any mesh at pickup with GR Yaris. Could be on the top of pic up pipe but wouldn't be surprised if there was not any.

A short update: wrote an email to my dealer some minutes ago how we should proceed. I will keep you updated.

next update: dealer responded immediately, they would like to see the filter and parts and discuss the next steps with me.

For further investigation, I changed the oil and filter again today and did not find any debris. Drained the oil trough a mesh to carch potential stuff floating around.
With a non-adjustable boroskope it’s not possible to see the oil intake trough the drain plug bore.

My opinion: these debris were a single incident. Maybe something dropped in during the last regular service or was washed away inside the engine. I would not take any further measures at the moment.

Dear all,

…next oil change! And for sure I opened the filter can and found again some RTV… this time, the root cause was quite easy to find: it‘s coming from the filter itself. The filter bottom part seems to be sealed in with RTV, some excess material is still visible. Not the quality I would like to see from an original spare part.
Now I will contact my dealer and will ask for an address or contact to report this quality issue.

that's what we all get when Toyota allocates some of its critical-components production to China.
"5S" production practices not at the top of priorities over there... ref. to

the fun part of the story: until a month or so I had a Honda CB 350 Four as well and I really can support the statements made in this video.
