Hard work or is it just me?

Always turning off and realising the indicator is not on because i’ve not pushed it twice.

I've found it to be... different... but not actually a problem.
When you say pushed it twice, are you being literal? i.e. push it, release and push it again?
If so, you don't need to do that - a 'half push' gives the lane change flashes, but if you push the stalk further, the indicator latches on. This is no different to most cars except that the stalk doesn't physically latch.
Apologies if I've misunderstood what you're saying.

I'm guessing it's the scenario where you latch the indicator on but it self-cancels because you've straightened up a bit (say on a bridge part of a roundabout) but you actually want it to remain on because you're still going round the roundabout.

The lack of the physical ping back to let you know it's cancelled takes a bit of getting used to - from memory there is maybe some kind of feedback but it's very subtle. I just notice it's stopped flashing so use the stalk again.

I've got used to it totally now - to the extent that I occasionally get confused by our other car with 'normal' indicators!

Us humans are wonderfully adaptable.

Imagine turning right then wanting to come off left. One press cancels it then press again for left?

Or am I being a divvy?

Don't you just need to push it all the way left in one move?
I'd have to try it, but I'm sure that's how it works.
Unless you're only wanting the lane change flashes, in which case, yes, you would have to cancel it first I think.

Yeah, half tap to cancel, half tap to do a 3 blink left, usually enough for exiting a roundabout. Or you can do 1 full tap to the left which will cancel it and put the left indicator on in one motion.

I was braced not to like them, I think they are fantastic, prefer it over the traditional latching indicators.

Still cant see any advantage whatsoever over traditional indicators. Used to them, so not really a showstopper, but a baffling design decision.
An answer to a question no one asked.

Like everything else... cost.
No mechanical latch in the switch, or reset mechanism on the column.

I'm not entirely sure I buy that. As far as I know, BMW use these style of indicator, and have done for years, and they are not a manufacturer known for cutting costs on their interiors.

Also, how much cost would that actually save? Surely a traditional style latching indicator is so ubiquitous that it would cost more to change the setup. The original GT86 had normal indicators, and we've already seen that the new gen has pretty much the exact same parts underneath in lots of areas, so it seems odd that they choose to intentionally change the indicator design to save cost.

I can only assume that perhaps Subaru has started using these types of indicators in their other models because they are perceived to be more "premium" so it's changed in the BR86Z platform too.
