GR86 PistonHeads favourite car of ‘22

Hot hatches, Alpine A110, 911, supra, whole load of things but for whatever reason the 86 just doesn’t do it for me same with the A45 AMG but I’m sure there is plenty out there that do. Doesn’t mean they’re wrong and you’re right just means we’re different.
Doesn't mean they are right either. Horses for courses, etc. Lots on PH are all talk and never actually buy anything. I've learned all I can with hot hatches. I like them but need to move on to learn new things.

Obviously we can go round in circles here but they have over 10,000 active users a day so of course you will get a percentage “that are all talk and never actually buy anything” but you will also get a large percentage that do. But this is the same for all forums that aren’t marque specific (to a degree).

I did wonder if the "you could buy a well used, massive, two ton, automatic saloon" posts were satirical in nature - mocking that sort of view.

But I'm not sure if it's genuine, so I suppose it could be really bad satire, or really good well pitched satire.

Looking at a second car lately, I’d be tempted by a Caterham, it’s all the best bits of the 86 but turned up to 11 but next to no practicality for road trips etc.

As something to run alongside the i30N it’d be quite nice to have that contrast, had a look at Lotus too, maybe an Elise 220/240? A GR Yaris is up there but moving away from another hot hatch tbh.

We all have our own opinions on the PH forums, but I think everyone on here could probably agree that the article is a good read and we should all be feeling pretty smitten!

I thought Caterham a long time ago but the second you run into the practicality for road trips, you may as well get a bike.

I'm still loving the GR86. Other lazy options for performance are just that and it's either Warp 10 to get any enjoyment out of it, or it get to 8 tenths and it falls apart and highlights it's weaknesses. The only car I've driven which is special like the GR86 from 1 tenth to 10 tenths is the FK8 Type-R. Both feel special every drive. I keep getting the question "you could've bought x for less and it's faster". Buy a bike and everything is slow. I bought this for corners and attacking my favourite roads but in a way that I'm an integral part, something the reviewer gets too. If the car nails an apex and gets a good exit, I had to be involved in making it do it.

I got sent to buy a Caterham a while back, a CSR250 from memory.

I was sure I'd love it, but by the time I got back to the dealership I knew it wasn't for me on the public roads.

They're just too low, other drivers just don't know you're beside them (traffic lights etc)

The seller helped my lift the engine covers off, so flimsy.

I felt so, so, vulnerable... And I've ridden motorbikes for 30 years.

I've been in the unfortunate position of seeing someone crash and die in a relatively minor incident in a Caterham at Goodwood.

Great engaging drive but not very safe in my opinion.

There's absolutely no way I'd have another noughties BMW rather than a GR86, because I cannot countenance those strange indicators they have... ;)
