I’ve always had my car serviced at RRG in Macclesfield, a very reputable main dealer who know about the GR. I’ve just checked the oil and it’s marginally below mid point on the dipstick so I’m going to keep an eye on it but also get a litre of oil just in case.

I don’t know which brand they will have used at the last service so I am wondering how important this is? I’d hope that as long as it’s the same spec (0W-20 API SP, GF-6A ) then any brand should be OK for top up.

Any thoughts or advice?

For a stock engine, literally anything with an SP/GF-6A cert will be fine. You go to a Toyota dealer here in Japan, they likely aren't even using the stuff from the Toyota can, but from the Castle can, which is the cheap, "generic" Toyota brand.

Just call them and clarify, I took mine to them the last few years and was told they use ravenol gf-6a a few years back, I assume the service sheet still says the Toyota part number just so Toyota GB can't try and deny a warranty claim for using non Toyota oil even though it's the correct spec
