Got a call today, before my car goes in tomorrow for its 2nd service, to say that I would be required to pay £9 for disposal of the oil? (The service itself is covered by a service plan)

It’s only £9 of course but f me sideways, isn’t this taking the Michael?

£300 quid for a service and they want to charge extra for disposing of the oil?!?!
That's taking the merry piss if you ask me.

Tell them to do one.
I had mine serviced a month ago at Bedford Steven Eagell and didn’t have to pay for disposal.
 
It’s part of a cost of running a dealership service department. Some places itemise it as a separate item on the invoice (I’ve never quite understood why, presumably for accounting purposes so it goes in ‘Sundry sales’ rather than into the labour sales pot…).

Either way, there’s no legal requirement for it to be charged out (unless the legislation has changed since I was a service manager eleven years ago). Oil & hazardous material disposal was something we paid a sub contractor a set amount to come in and deal with on a monthly basis. It comes directly off the department’s bottom line.

Long story short, it should be included in the service price quoted, or a service plan. Tell them to bugger off.

Car is in now and I just got a sob story about how the dealership (group?) pays £350k per annum for oil disposal and that the £9 is only a small contribution towards this, totally embarrassing stuff - this is a £470 service remember.

Without being a Karen -or whatever the male equivalent is- I made clear if they insist of taking the £9 that I will never return. Their choice.

Let’s see.
 
As they are being so candid about their finances, ask them to break down the exact costs of the service. Oil, oil filter, air filter, diff oil, brake fluid. Maybe an hour's labour. Be surprised if its anything like £470 worth of work, so tell them to take the £9 out of their profit on that.

EDIT: They'll probably ring you in an hour anyway and say come pick the car up because they don't have an oil filter in stock.

They are kidding right? Are they a charity?

It's a fixed pricing schedule for the service. That is part of it, the price is the price. Next time you go in are you expected to pay for their lunch too? Your share of the electricity bill?
 
Update: they have agreed to ‘waive the charge on this occasion’ - and will consider my feedback as they move forward on how to approach this with customers 🙄

Note, this was Toyota Edinburgh Newbridge, should anyone wish to book in due to their benevolence. Alternatively, for those who may wish to steer clear.

Car collected with a clean bill of health and no issue with oil filter.

It's sometimes separately noted on invoices as an 'environmental charge' (such as with tyre companies for disposal), but I've never seen it on a Full Service sheet before as the overall invoice price usually covers it. If you have a Service Plan in place there should be absolutely nothing else to pay, unless you get suckered into the upselling of fuel additives or aircon refreshing. Chancing ba***rds if you ask me! Guess I'll be heading across to Hamilton for my Yr3 service when the time comes ...

I think you should raise this with Toyota UK. It’s one thing if you’d just called up for a service and it’s included in the costs but the whole point of a service plan is it’s all covered with no additional payments.

And as mentioned above a breakdown of parts and Labour is probably less than what you have paid.
 
My service with Western Newbridge was supposed to be on the 2nd, but they phoned before to say they had no oil filters so now it's postponed indefinitely. I suppose you had no issues with that? They also charge £365 for the first service when the Toyota "fixed" price is £315 - they did price match when I queried it but still. Think I'll just go to Hamilton.

given all the recent shenanigans re. oil filters, I made sure to discreetly mark it before taking it in. I then checked it before driving away. Sure enough it had been changed.
 
I buy my own beforehand. Dealer didn't have them 2 years running. I hate going near dealers. They weren't happy when I gave a bad score because I suspected they washed my car, despite several time saying not to touch it (Think it was just pressure washed) and making the interior smell like a tart's handbag. I'm seriously considering a pilgrimage to RRG Macclesfield next year instead. They can do the diff and gearbox fluids then too.
 
I sound like an old record but find and support a good Indy thats used to Japanese cars. It fuels competition, keeps them going and you are more likely to get a personal service.

Oh and you won't be fleeced over £300 for an oil change.

I paid £80 for my 1st service at my local dealer. Ok I supplied my own oil but got friends and family discount from my mate who works there. Worked out at £140 with the oil.
