GR86 Oil cooler kit options - EU

Ansix developed a O2W cooler that some people in Canada is running with success.

Group is reviewing with them details and suggesting improvements (e.g: using adaptor to be able to use Subaru filter) and/or options (e.g: using Porsche core).

Not sure of Ok to add link from other forum here, if Ok’d I will add.

Ah this is great, I'm only interested in O2W coolers, the only option was Mocals laminova oil coolers, it's nice to see another option on the market.

I’ve recently been able to give the HEL Performance oil cooler kit a proper shakedown on track… I’m pleased to say oil temps peaked at only 105C which is a huge improvement from the 125C+ I was getting within one hot lap earlier this year!
Still happy with it? . They have a black Friday discount going on at the moment so I may as well get it now

Hi there, did any of you guys that use an oil cooler from HEL have had any issues with leaking of oil?

Cheers
Dan

wow... I was going to buy this one, but since this happened to you, maybe I'll look for another option... Have you had this problem from the start, or has it come on over time?

Has anyone measured how much the oil pressure drops with the oil cooler installed? The only downside that makes me hesitate to install it is that it will lower the overall oil pressure under normal conditions.

If I remember Ansixauto measured. I think the oil cooler they sell has a comparison graph

I bought this (HEL) oil cooler months ago but have not installed it.

Mine weeped out of the right-side connection to the Setrab cooler on first use. It is possible to 'untighten' I suppose during final fitment in the body, double check every connection and ensure everything is very tight. Not uncommon to oil coolers I suppose.

No complaints to the HEL kit in anger - I bought the 16 row and its too good for normal use, oil sits at 73-75 on my commuting miles so I disconnect between track days. 100-105 on track days, lovely. I don't have a baffle fitted, but it only takes five minutes to fit and unfit the filter assembly (just do it before you set off for the track!)

Wait, what? You remove the sandwich plate from the oil loop for normal road usage?

Yup. The caps for the setrab fit nicely on the end of the two hoses. Just personal preference, I know you can get baffles to limit the coolth on daily driving

The problem started soon after installing the cooler. For now I changed the banjoo adaptors to regular ones, now it doesnt leak anymore.
But I am really dissapointed from HEL, I asked them for help in this matter, but they did not even respond by phone or mail.

I think, if you get lucky, HEL could be good, but it seems they have a problem with the connectors and customer support.

That's actually quite genius how you tapped the lines. The problem I see however, is frequent screwing in and out sandwich plate adapters, and even the threads. However, it is something I'll have to consider for winter time...

It's certainly one to watch, I agree. Can always buy new end fittings to the sandwich plate, but a set of new hoses requires bumper off. I haven't run the cooler in summer (only bought it in October last year) so I may end up leaving it connected during the hotter season, but I high mileage daily mine through winter so wanted to disconnect it (again just personal preference). Aside from a slight leak on first fitment I've had no problems with the kit, but it seems like if I do have a problem HEL won't be much help..!

Fitting a sandwich plate with thermostat would surely be a solution to the problem of seasonal disconnection/reconnection surely ?

The HEL kit has a thermostat, but as mentioned the oil temp is just low in winter on motorway miles. Prefer to just disconnect it. My understanding of the kit is that it always flows, the thermostat opens fully at setpoint but never closes fully.

From what I understand most kits are always open by about 10%, and then fully open when they reach the threshold on the sandwich plate (92C for my HEL 13 row kit), which means it overcools for most of the time especially on the motorway where it'll sit in the 70's celcius range for most folks.

I've come up with grille pieces which block the cooler off and take about 5 mins to pop in / out when i get to/from track. Works and keeps my running temp in line with the water temp when cruising (90ish). Still a bit of a prototype as the grille on these is slightly parabolic so fitment is a learning curve :D , but will reveal more in due course .

Would an alternative be to add high flowing dry brake connections to the cooler circuit somewhere accessible. It could be easily disconnected in winter with a small section of hose swapped in effectively looping it minus the cooler?
