So after 3700miles and 18months, time for a big service including the air filter.
I have so far done the air filter and will do the Gearbox and diff oils. Brake fluid and engine oil is done regularly due to track days, usually every 3rd session.
The cheapskate that I am, I cross referenced filters and discovered that the CHR filter is the same size. As it is like 1/2 the price of the OEM GR86 Red filter, I got one and installed it.
Noticed right away the engine felt tight, not free revving low down. Thought it maybe just me, so done a couple of trips with it whilst I waited for the OEM Red filter to arrived.
Swapped it out today and it wasn't me... the CHR filter was strangling the air. Not sure if it maybe a fake one (bought off ebay) but it was all branded Toyota and made in Poland.
Compared the CHR and GR86 filters and other than the immediate difference in colour, the GR filter seemed to have less pleats that the CHR one. Not a huge amount, maybe 5% less pleats. Other than that, dimensions all the same.
So, if you are changing the OEM filter, make sure your don't scrimp (waste money on a Filter that is now in the bin) and get the factory OEM Red filter for our cars.
