Soon released. Not (yet?) in GR sizing? Still OE only, not available for poor public.

Have you tried the Pilot Sport Cup 2, and had it for road-use as well ?

On the new M3/M4, the PS4S* is hardly slower then the cup2 in the dry, and vastly superior in the wet. I suspect that this S5 will be very similar using developments of the 4S*....

Another is a road tire and another a track tire so different use cases.
I'd prefer the PS - S-variants unless tracking the car alot. on the road PS4S will be much better.

Yes and no, grey zone. The S5 is primarrily a road tyre but looking like more focus on track capability then ever before, while the Cup2 is OE mount more then any other for track focused road cars. I wouldn't be suprised if the S5 outperforms an early Cup2 on dry track....

Interesting thoughts. I had planned to put Cup 2's on mine when the PS4S wear out so shall be following any feedback on the new 5's very closely.

Let's hope they trickle down to mere consumers like us*. The more I think of it, this new S5 looks a lot like a Cup2 OEM replacement (or something at least inbetween 4S and Cup2), as cars that had Cup2 for dry performance were getting critique for bad wet performance. And they look more like Cup 2's then 4S's...

*and almost zero chance to see something in 17" unfortunately....

I was going to start a new thread on tyres and then this got posted…I was putting summer wheels/tyres back on over the weekend and had a panic when I saw something stuck into the tyre tread. I googled replacement PS4Ss and there are basically none around any more, so wondering on thoughts for replacements in the future? As it turns out the object had only gone about 1mm into a thick tread block and no loss of pressure, phew.

I assume Michelin are moving onto the 5 but curious as to how to keep the car close to stock when replacement time comes.

We get so many people confused about the line-up positionings of 4/4S/5 and now they go and change the naming scheme 😪
Looking forward to reviews of more reasonable sizes.

I spoke with my tire dealer about these S5's today, they are not visible in any system here in Sweden. Not even the 21" sizes that exists elsewhere.
( On dackonline they're available to order in 21" )
At a resent meeting with Michelin they had not even mentioned 4S to be replaced, or that it exists a S5.
This is in Sweden

The curiosity is increasing :)

I'm just glad they changed the naming convention. Pretty much all tyre discussions go something like:

A: What tyres are you running?
B: I've got PS4s on.
A: Oh great, I've been looking at the PS4S, what are they like?
B: Yeah pretty good, got them for £100 here.
A: £100 for a PS4S? Bargain! Wait, these are PS4?
B: Yeah, that's what I said.

And so on and so forth.,.

Also has to be said, the Tyre Reviews Youtube channel is exceptional quality.

The PSS5 is the successor to the PS4S, It has a slightly confusing naming history, the Pilot Sport 5 replaced the 4, which replaced the 3 and so on, but the Pilot Sport 4S was the successor to the Pilot Super Sport, which in turn was the direct replacement for the Pilot Sport 2. The S suffix replaced the Super before the Sport, so I guess they’re putting it back before the number (although not before the Sport!). It does avoid the plural issue I guess.

2010 - Pilot Sport 3 released, replacing the Pilot Sport 2 AND Pilot Exalto 2 tyres, although only a true successor to the PE2.

2010 - Pilot Super Sport released as OE tyre for the Ferrari 599 GTO. Then rolled out to other sizes and becoming the true replacement of the PS2.

2016 - Pilot Sport 4 released as a direct replacement of the PS3.

2017 - Pilot Sport 4S released, originally in 19” and larger, as a direct replacement of the Pilot Super Sport. Then rolled out to other sizes.

2022 - Pilot Sport 5 released as a direct replacement of the PS4.

2023 - Pilot Sport S5 released in 21” size as OE tyre, soon to be rolled out to other sizes.

So the PSS5 is starting off as OE fitment in 21” but will become available in all the usual sizes, I imagine most GRY owners will be running these in a few years as it will supersede the PS4S.

Yeah the naming was recapped in the excellent tyrereviews vid, and there Jonathan also clarifies that Michelin, for now, does NOT regard the PSS5 as a PS4S replacement, rather that there will be yet another product that replaces it.

Confusing? For sure. Maybe it keeps us hooked, to be continued...
