GR86 Just bought one!

Hey all,
Finally bought a GR86 - without even driving it prior to purchase. I have have had a few "toys" both German, Japanese, French and Italian but I am suitably impressed with the GR86.
Should I mod it?
Where should I start?
Any suggestions welcome.

There are so many ways you could go that it would potentially fill an internet forum ... ;)

If you know, or happen to live near, someone with a laptop and 'Techstream' software then some 'freebie' software mods might be: disabling the artificial engine noise, remote windows up/down from keyfob, unlocking both doors (not just driver) with single fob press and full manual control of Aircon/recirc (stops it coming on automatically). Takes about 10 minutes to do. If you take it to a dealership expect an hour's labour, or maybe even total confusion and absolute failure to achieve anything ...
Without the fake engine sound and running on an OEM exhaust, you might think your GR86 has turned into an EV, so for some aural delight maybe consider getting yourself a decent Cat-Back exhaust (one that doesn't drone) so that it sounds like a nice sports car. Plenty of choice out there and many have been purchased and reviewed within these walls.

It really depends on you, how you drive it and how you intend to use the car.
There is no essential mod but
- Getting it programmed so that you can control the windows from the keyfob is pretty great, specially on this heatwave.
- If you have issues with the throttle then consider changing the throttle spring for lighter one (search here for info)
- Some (not me) have added sound insulation
- Deactivate the fake engine sound
- Get an exhaust if it is too quiet
- Get a professional alignment, OEM comes with very dodgy numbers.

If you are going to track it then
- Oil cooler is essential
- Better track brake pads.

That is just to start, the list of things you can do is pretty long. Figure out what you want out of the car and people can guide you better.
 
- Slam it
- Camber it
- Turbo it
- Decat exhaust + burble tune
- Replace gearknob with hilt of a samurai sword
- Weird Japanese anime air freshener.

You will be really cool.



Srsly, welcome. Replace clutch pedal assist spring with lighter one for better feel, turn off the fake exhaust noise, get a decent alignment, then go have fun.

Maybe, depends if there is anything you don't like or think needs improving. Drive it for a while and see, an exhaust usually finds it way on the list quite quickly, as does unplugging the fake sound generator.

Likely to track it at some point, but fast road driving will be the norm, I have access to a daily so this is a second car. Thanks or the info - especially regarding the key fob and fake noise - seems to be popular mods.

Hey ZN8 , thanks for info - how do unplug the fake sound generator? Somewhere on YouTube I guess? I think brakes first - better to have it stopping quicker before I make it go quicker.

With a username like yours perhaps we can assume that you are more senior in years, and like to dress well from time to time unlike many of the hoody- and polyester-clad rabble who frequent this forum.

(Unless you are a fan of the films of Park Chan-wook?)

So the only modification you really need to consider, due to Toyota's appalling lack of consideration for apparel storage, is one of these.

These are mine. But I have front camber bolts and rear upper control arms among other mods

Another blue one in the Kingdom eh!? Jeezo, GR86 are like the frickin’ #19 bus around here; nothing for ages then as soon as you start walking four go past ya!

@GR86_oldboy, if you stay around this way it might be nice to get a meet-up sometime for a flat white and a chat. You could view my present ‘mods’ and I could even bring along my laptop and change some of those settings for you 😉

Just as long as you lot STAY in Fife. Haven't seen another Electric Blue since I bought it and keen on keeping it that way so I feel special... unless you're friendly Fifers 😉
