So there I was, parked on my local high street, sitting in my GR86, waiting for my son to come out of the Tesco Express, when BAM! a tatty old Jag XK8 whacks my mirror - top and bottom cover and glass go whizzing through the air.

Into the dealer, and you can't just source the top and bottom cover. You need the whole mechanism (and it turns out it had some internal damage anyway).

A replacement, fitted? £972.34. JESUS H!

£300 more than a whole wing mirror, that needed paint, for a VW Touareg, which is the last mirror I needed.

Be careful with those mirrors, folks!!

Blimey, lucky you were in the car, to get the guys details. I guess that sort of explains the high insurance costs.

£972!! OMG I think a tiny bit of wee wee just came out ...

I’m sorry but what an absolutely bell ***. How careless and what was his response ? I hope he pays every penny and more to sort it out. Hadn’t you been in the car I wonder if he’d of just driven off.

Rather steep, that.

So a pair of wing mirrors, at nearly two grand, costs one-fifteenth of the value of the whole car?

I doubt I'm the only one who misses being able to pop down to a scrapyard to get a Metro/Escort/Fiesta/Cavalier etc. mirror for a few quid!

😬 Jesus. Not even electrochromatic glasses on them either from memory. That’s usually one of the reasons for silly replacement costs on door mirrors!

Its no wonder why cars are so easily written off, dread to think how much a headlight costs.

You can buy all the mirror covers serprately in the US. I would try another dealer.

$ 2,375 dollars each in the US. Probably over £2,500 over here 🤣

Crazy these costs we are seeing. Makes me think about a couple of years old cayman may be cheaper or about the same

To be honest the running costs of certainly the Base 718 is comparable or cheaper but with 300bhp. Servicing slightly more but every 24mths and last time i had a Macan S as free loan car for 2 days (they always like to keep it 2 days).

Exactly.
LED headlights are always mega expensive, and the laser ones even more so. A bust headlight will write such cars off when they are 20 years old unless the replacement parts drop in price.
Expensive parts is also part of the reason our premiums are so extortionate!

No I'm sure he would have stopped and left a note, actually no he wouldn't, he was in a Jaaag so obviously a bounder and a cad.

That's expensive, makes me think, I might make the auto fold mirrors mod.
Thats the reason to look for an auto folding mirror: Someone damaged the LH mirror on my former GT86 (driving away...), Toyota wanted more than €700.- for that part without fitting, got a good used one for ~€150.- and learned my lesson. The auto folding mirror module cost me just €60.- and I fitted it by myself...

Bye for now Fred

Yes, £972 EACH! It's broken the covers and the internal points for clicking the covers onto, so it's the whole shebang needed.

He was a massive b8ll-end, yes. Wanted to pay directly to avoid claiming but messed me about, and ended up humble-bragging about how he enjoys his Aston DB6. Massive t8at. Claimed now on his insurance - hope it costs him a fortune to renew now :)
