Motive Garage have posted up a video of their car with head gasket failure. However, their car has been running 37 psi and 500 bhp, so to be fair, it's done well. Their video shows the head removed & from what they can see, there is no damage to anything other than the gasket itself, which they are really impressed with & shows how strong this engine is (y)

no not me just heard lots of engine rebuilds due to oil burning back in the day

We bought a 3 year old Rav4 T180 2.2 that drank oil like I drink tea - about 10 cups a day 😂 New short engine from Toyota along with lots of other bits & pieces. This was in 2011 & I'm not concerned about anything similar happening with the GR engine. If the head gasket is only going to give up after getting a beasting at 37 psi, then the majority of us have nothing to worry about 👍

Yes, the cylinder walls are thick but they could still walk. However, I didn't see any real indication of it from the video.

3 cylinders, 500hp stock block...Toyota has given us the Half JZ.

Half JZ :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:.

Cue the Open deck vs Closed deck discussion

Subaru guys know the pain. Will be interesting to see what solution the aftermarket comes up with if the cylinders are walking. However, I would wager they aren't currently at this power. Hopefully, it is as relatively simple as aftermarket head bolts and head gasket.

Subaru guy here 👋 Although thankfully my 1996 classic had the marks on the block indicating closed deck - never missed a beat.

Agreed after seeing the motive video aftermarket head bolt and gasket should help enormously for those looking for huge power levels.

Interesting head gasket though not being completely round for the pistons to accommodate the valve clearance - first time I have seen that.

I can see a fire ring gasket solution in the future and I bet ARP is already working on head bolts to get onto the GR gravy train.

Amazing that ARP haven't punted a set out before now. There's not a lot of R&D involved, just spec, sizing and manufacture.

Having said that, Motive comment that the stock studs seem fine even after the abuse they gave them, so uprated items are maybe not going to be needed for anyone but the hardest of hardcore tuners?

Anyone know what the outcome was of the other guy with the HG failure? (Over on Yaris.co.uk)

His was a standard car + tuning box and last I heard Toyota had diagnosed it and started taking it to bits.

Curious to know if they'd accepted the warranty claim

I asked on there last night & posted up the link to this video. Haven't had any response from Kevin

I wonder what the power limit of this engine is. 600, 700? Surely it can't 1000bhp like some GTRs.

I remember when Ford released the latest Fiesta ST and people thought 200bhp would be too much for a 3 cylinder. Really impressive engineering to get so much power from just a small lightweight engine.

Motive has said that they aren't going to go any further with theirs, but have suggested that it could make more power with a bigger turbo. EKanoo Racing I think have got 520 bhp, or there abouts & SVM are also around the 500 mark. Will be interesting to se e if anyone tries to get in to the 600's.

As @MRSUB says, if you consider it half a JZ then "reliable" outputs of 500 hp shouldn't be too unexpected. It's crazy thinking so much can come out of such a tiny engine, but the physics stack up.

Of course, there are always those that will strap the biggest turbo they can find to the thing, turn the wick up and hide behind something solid :D For those, it really wouldn't surprise me if someone builds an 800 hp Yaris one day as there are have been many 2.6-3.0l sixes chucking out 1,500 hp.

For us normal owners, knowing that the fundamentals are capable of much more than the 50-ish hp tickles we are likely to give the engine with a bit more boost and an induction/exhaust gives a lot of comfort.

For me it‘s the modern equivalent of Mitsubishi‘s 4G63.
That‘s where engineering got us in the past 15 years.

To have the same power output with a 20% smaller engine.
So i‘m not surprised it‘s able to produce 400-500hp with relatively simple mods.

Everything above that will require major Modifications and will significantly reduce the durability of this engine.

Keep in mind, the top Time Attack EVO‘s are able to make 800-1‘000hp for a couple hundred of km‘s before they need a rebuild.

So i‘m quite sure, that we will see 700-800hp GR‘s in a few years.
Maybe even more on the 1/4 Mile.
