GR86 GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

I'm really tempted by the BBS XRs in bronze, as they seem to match the car so well, but their weight is quite off-putting - they're about 2kg heavier than the stock GR86 wheels.

Still trying to find my ideal wheel that doesn't cost a kidney.

For a year now, I'm looking for new summer wheels. But couldn't decide which to buy...
I really like the idea of JDM wheels on a Japanese car. Sadly, probably all of those wheels are not street legal here in Germany. So I needed to look for alternatives.
With the 5x100 hole pattern the selection isn't the greatest and I could narrow it down to two.

Motec MCR6
8"x18" ET38
8,8 kg
1200 €

TüV Papers are in progress and probably ready in March or April.

Pros:
- Design (big pro)
- light
- bronze

Cons:
- ET38 "too small" - TüV probably wants some kind of small Mudflaps/covers on the wing
- 225er Tires are not possible without more modifications
1702487527936.webp
OZ Ultraleggera
8"x18" ET48
9 kg
1600 € (maybe more next year)

Pros:
- light
- bronze
- No modifications needed for TüV
- 225er are without modifications possible

Cons:
- very expensive
- Give a good look on the small brake calibers
- not so jdm like

I'm really torn between those.

OZ Ultraleggera
Maybe you already know these?! - Tomason TN25. They have a pretty similar style, certification for GR86 is available (no modifications required), they are even a tad lighter and they cost only about the half (y) I am super happy with them and have received a lot of praise for this combination.
I have them on my smurf:

Hi Shoggy,
the Tomason TN25 do also pop up very so often. These wheels do tick all boxes, are dirt cheap and look fantastic on our cars. The price-performance ratio is too good not to consider them.
As the OEM wheels also have a ten spoke design, the Tomason wheels are a little bit too similar. I want something a bit more different. The Ultraleggera are barely different enough 😅

Do you have 225/40 R18 Tires on your wheels? Did the TüV Inspector say something about a speedometer correction?

Really want a set of those in that dark bronze for my red GR86, but I don't think they ship from Germany to the UK.

Does anyone know any UK stockists?

I think I've finally decided what wheels to get for my electric blue GR86.

My search has been troubled by considerations around costs, weight and looks.

Ideally I did not want to spend more than £1200 for a full set, and with a lot of wheels requiring new tyres (to avoid a ridiculous stretch with the 215s), this would often push the total cost into the £1500-2000 territory.

From the weight perspective, my criteria was to not go over the stock weight of wheels + tyres, and preferably shaving off a kilo or two per corner, which meant ideally looking at flow-formed wheels only, with tyres no larger than 235/40.

Looks are very subjective, but I wanted the correct offset to get wheels that are as flush with the body as possible, without having any concerns about the tyres rubbing against the body, to avoid designs that could be considered "too busy" and colours that would look too similar to the boring stock matt black, or stand out too much.

A strong contender were the bronze BBS XRs that could be had for around £1200, and in the 18x8 size would accommodate stock tyres, but at 12.5kg a wheel, they're over 2kg per corner heavier than stock wheels, which isn't really acceptable on such a light car.

OZ Racing HLT wheels look great, but come with a high price point of £1500+ per set.

Rays Gram Light 57CR in Gun Blue were easily one of my favourites, but would also cost £1500+ and would require a new set of tyres to look right, putting the total at nearly £2k.

Enkei wheels are generally good value abroad, but seem very overpriced in the UK, so I've quickly switched my focus to other brands.

I was almost ready to give up on deciding on a set this side of Christmas, when I've remembered @S18RSG 's Japan Racing SL-01 bronze wheels from Japfest and his thread here. They looked really good in the flesh and he had only good things to say about them!

Worth noting that they are JR's own flow-formed design (unlike their other wheels, which are cast reps) and only weigh around 8.2kg, which is a 9kg weight saving all around from stock!

I have decided against going with the bronze ones, as I find that shade a bit too dark for the light electric blue, and will instead get them in Gunmetal, with the "safe" 18x8.5 ET42 offset.

Now I need to decide whether I can get away with getting 225/40 tyres, as those are generally £120 cheaper for a set than the somewhat heavier 235s...

Picture somewhat related (same wheel, similar colour, different car).

I’ve ordered the same wheels in black! Just waiting for my tyres to be delivered. I’ve gone for a 225/40

Yes, I use them with 225/40 R18 tires. No problems with TÜV. I can't tell if they have really checked it or simply assumed that it must be still OK because of the small deviation. I did a test via GPS myself later and the car still displays the speed slightly too high (about 1 to 2 km/h)

Those are a good looking rim but, I'm having trouble reconciling the non-symmetrical pattern in my head, with the 'Y' spoke being opposite a block shape, in fact it's making me fidget just looking at it again o_O

It is symmetrical. If you slice it in half, you've got a mirror image of the pattern on each side.

As this is a wheel with 5 bolts, it means each Y spoke faces off a bolt, with the U/V shaped spokes encompassing the bolts themselves on the opposite side.

I think it looks a bit more interesting than a lot of the wheel designs that rehash the same pattern over and over again (even though some classics look great indeed).

Here's another picture that shows it off well on the blue RS:

I’ve been down the rabbit hole, no uk stockists.
My brother will be bringing a set back from Austria in February for me👌🏻

Where did you order from? Ross did tell me but I'd have to dig it out

My plan was to get them from JDMDistro, as they were on sale for under £200/wheel, but they've unfortunately gone back up to full price at the moment.

I think they tend to match Japan Racing's official MSRP, so might be worth keeping an eye out for another sale there.

I've bought these for my 86. In no rush, so gonna save some shipping fees and send them by surface mail. Will take around 2-3months.

These on the car above are 9.5 x 18, I went for a more conservative 8.5 x 18 as primarily they will be my track day wheels on 225/40 18. Sure, there more grip with wider wheels and tyres but it gets to a stage where there is too much grip for the power available and the fun of driving gets lost for the sake of chasing lap times.
Hi
Who did you order from ?

Thanks Chris
