Toyota Japan just announced a recall for 7500 GR86( Also 5500 BRZ)).

Fault in rear lights.
Date is incorrect in press release.

Regarding some GR86 vehicles produced from Reiwa 3 to Reiwa 4, Subaru Co., Ltd. notified the following recall to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on August 31, 2020.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to everyone who uses it. Originally, we will repair it as soon as possible, but it takes time to prepare for the repair. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation for a while.
In addition, we will guide you again as soon as the repair is ready, so thank you.

Summary of the recall​

1. The situation of the problem
In the rear combination lamp, due to insufficient electronic circuit settings of components, it may be difficult to raise the voltage to turn on the rear direction indicator and the rear emergency flashing indicator. Therefore, there is a risk that the rear direction indicator and the rear emergency flashing indicator will temporarily not light up.
2. Contents of improvement
All vehicles, the left and right rear combination lamps will be replaced with countermeasures.

1. That is a weird fault in the video, ie how the lamp unit itself is so sensitive to the sunlight. The Engineer in me wants to know more.
2. If they do replace the units, I would love to keep the old ones as spares (unlikely)

I took a look into it as being an engineer I thought it was interesting, it goes deep into physics and I did write quite a lengthy post but it all got a bit much.

Ultimately an LED and a PV (solar cell) diode are constructed in a very similar way, under specific light conditions an LED ‘absorbs’ the UV light from the sun and acts like a PV cell, so rather than emitting light energy, its generates electrical energy.
 
How bizarre! So now we know that these cars can't:
- Turn right without the oil system failing.
- Indicate while driving west in the morning or east in the evening.

Starting to become a little difficult to work out which direction I can drive the bloody thing :p

Interesting, I've got a gauge in my gt86 that doesn't like hot sunny days and the display goes blank. Presumably a similar problem! Thought it was just the heat...
 
Bit of a thread bump...does this issue actually affect UK cars?
I happened to be on a dual carriageway just before sunset the other day, the sun was low and directly behind me.. I quickly tested my indicators and they worked fine, no hyper-flashing at all.

It wasn't a very scientific test granted, but has anyone here actually experienced it?
 
I had a weird one with the indicators on the inside of the wing mirrors (the little ones that tell the driver which indicator you have flashing) - in the low direct sun they were lighting up of their own accord

Are you sure that wasn't the blind spot monitor flashing because you had a car next to you?
 
Bit of a thread bump; my left indicator is now “hyper-flashing” do we think my car hasn’t had the recall and it’s a faulty tail light?

My hazard lights and right indicator flash correctly just the left one. 😅

Alternatively, is there something else I should be looking for to fix the “hyper-flashing” indicator?

In the old days, this meant that one of your indicator bulbs had gone.
