So...
Bought my Supra... Driven it for 1,000 miles and time for an update.
I'm happy, it's everything that the GR86 wasn't to me (important, to me). It's fast in a straight line... I mean really quite quick indeed. It's luxury, and premium and feels it. It's remarkably well built. It handles well and it's very fun to drive round corners and unstick that back end with the extra horses. I've driven it through heavy rain with traction control off, because I'm a moron. And it's wild. haha
All the flaws of the GR86 don't exist in this, different ones do though. For example, it is much smaller and you do notice that. There's no divider between the boot and the cockpit area... which is bizarre. I will investigate a solution to this...
It's also really well sound proofed... almost too well haha. You can't really hear the exhaust despite it actually having a good tone, but I'm going to fix that with a Cobra sport after market solution, to make it obnoxiously loud on the outside, but just audible on the inside.
All in all this is a massive upgrade to a GR86 - I wish it was manual, maybe... but the Auto is so good, and I've been really enjoying using the flappy paddles. That said, in the next 2-3 years I'll probably look at a manual supra or the new Civic Type R.
If anyone is on the fence about their GR86, my advice is sell it now and get in a Supra, before a second batch of the 86s come and devalue the current premium you can get.
Other great thing is, it's a BMW so you can use BIMMERCODE on it and really fine tune some amazing features... for example. I have turned on Daytime running rear lights. They look amazing.
I've had it professionally detailed, and coated and it looks FANTASTIC.
The 86's were good, but this is next level (and so it should be, it is a more expensive car)
Also, you thought the 86 was a head turner? This is breaking peoples necks... I don't think anyone knows what it is. I've had more comments on this car in the 2 weeks I've owned it than I ever had on any other car... (that's good and bad, f***ing nightmare to park)
Oh, one negative... it does go very fast, very quickly. This isn't good for your licence.... drive sensible! It does want to egg you on... and when you're behind that driver doing 45-50 mph where you thought "hmmm I'm not sure if I should overtake". This car says "Yes, overtake now."
And she's a thirsty thirsty girl. I'm averaging 19 mpg since buying it... That said, if you chuck it on cruise control adaptive... it will return you 32-34 mpg with ease. That's the only reason I'm averaging 19... because when you drive it hard, you will see 13 mpg. Whereas the GR86 I could drive that to its maximum and return 22 mpg. So... that is a consideration lol.
Also... I forgot how damn good having a good quality heads up display is... I never look at my speedo, I just check the one on the windscreen. It's fantastic. Why it isn't in every car is beyond me. Wireless car play is also f***ing awesome.
Another area the Supra is amazing in are the brakes... wow. This has some serious stopping power. Very impressive.
Lastly, what's a comment like this without pictures?

It doesn't force the gear change up, but I've not red-lined it and held it there... I will check this actually, but it has never forced a gear change upwards. It has forced it downwards though to prevent stalling, on some junctions I've pulled up in 2nd and I guess the computer has gone LOL NO. And forced changed me down to 1. However, never seen it force change me up... then again, I've never held it bouncing on the red line, ive always shifted up to next gear.
However, what I can say is when I've had it in 3rd and its hit red line, it hasn't auto changed up.
But I will investigate further!
Thanks for the spoiler compliment, I added that
Carbon fibre, I think it looks amazing, really suits the car. Just like the duckbill on GR86sOh btw... When I put the Supra on my insurance, I thought I was going to have to pay more money. Nope.
I got a £50 refund... Supra 3.0 @ 50k value is cheaper to insure than my GR86 at 31k value and less powerful? How does this make sense.
I ordered the new Supra in 2019 after my mk4 was on TG and I got to drive the mk5 during filming (pics for posterity) and the then new Z4. The BMW felt a generation newer that's not surprising as BMW aren't going to give their latest tech to another manufacturer. However, I did want to love the Supra. Once I'd driven the mk5 and seen it in real life, I was massively underwhelmed as still I am today so it was quickly cancelled with Toyota offering no discounts to calling me constantly with increasing discounts to get it sold. I suspect the manual is more engaging.
GR86 however I feel has more than lived up to my expectations and a car that genuinely feels special and much more Toyota-esque. For me, it's been one of the most exciting cars I've ever owned. I'll often take the GR86 over the 'posh Fiat ' in the fleet which is the highest praise I can give it.

Ha ha. Very nice, although I can't call it a posh Fiat. What makes you take the GR86 instead of the 488? Is it the realities of driving on our roads and the fun it can offer you as the driver at normal / legal(ish) speeds?Well as you asked so nicely
I've always had an affinity for Japanese cars and the GR86 is the best modern iteration of all the things I love. The other Jap cars in the fleet are also enjoyed and the 488 feels special for the few occasions a year it gets used but the GR86 is a genuine delight. It's also normally 'downstairs' and I'm lazy

.I think the GR86 is a car that is a true great which is something I think we can all appreciate and agree on. I definitely pick the keys for most non work related trips at the moment.

Just watched Savagegeese final impressions video and they sing the praises of the GR86. A car at that price bieng so good. Another video said yesterday that this car will be bought by people with very expensive cars to use it as a cheap fun car and then end up using the GR86 all of the time and wondering if they do need the other cars. Toyota have now given us two £30k fun cars. I hope people remember this when we can't get them anymore which is why I think they should be looked after, used on dry sunny days and kept till you drop. Use the boring battery cars for those wet, cold and salty roads.
Agree except these last lines. Get proper rust protection and enjoy them on real roads which are now empty when all the Cuddles and co stay at home
