Hi

Looking to import a new GR86 and was wondering has anyone done it on here and what were the hidden costs. I know a radio and possibly clocks for mph.

@MartinT is your man for this :)
He's got a great thread about his imported BRZ in the Member's Cars section.

Sorry, I've been away. Yes, I went through the whole BRZ JDM import process, most of which should be similar for the GR86.

Ask away!

To answer your immediate questions, the requirement for MPH is met by a small separate GPS digital speedo mounted just in the corner of my dash. The main speedo remains on KPH and the odometer in km. All perfectly fine in the UK.

I had no problems with my radio, a Japanese Alpine. Although it displays in Japanese, I got it working with Android Auto and it only takes a few seconds after startup. Once running AA, everything is in English and driven by my phone. I dare say Apple Carplay should be similar.

Head Up Display 2.webp

That was the radio i was going to pick , as you have to order one when ticking rear camera on GR factory order.

What’s the likely total local cost in Yen?

There’s been a heap of prices for Japan buyers of the 9th championship GRY this week. ¥5.8m which is under £28k. I can’t read Japanese so assume there’s more cost than ¥5.8m

Hi

Total cost of car was 4.6 million yen but there will be a cost for fitting of parts at dealership as only the sachs and Brembo's are factory fit.

I've just realised you meant a brand new car. How will you get around the rules about only being able to import 6 month or older cars? Or so I was told.

No getting around it as far as I am aware of. It would take best part of 3 month to get so another 3 in storage is not going to kill me and the company will do this. Plus the 3 to 4 month factory order wait .

Interesting what you said about factory fit. My BRZ came with STi aero, STi v-bars and rear draw stiffener, Fujitsubo exhaust and Alpine head unit with Panasonic front dashcam (the Alpine records both front and rear cams). The Japanese order sheet I have for the car when it was new has them all listed. If not factory fit, perhaps it was the Subaru dealer that fitted them?

Interested to follow your car's progress and would be very happy to meet up when you have it.

Can you still order BRZ in Japan? If you can use the Subaru website to spec a car and it would tell you then whats factory fit like it does on Toyota's page.

Yeah be good to meet but we are at opposite ends of the country.

I guess so. I downloaded the Japanese brochure and those items I have are listed in there. Maybe the lines between factory install and dealer install are blurred.

Shame, but good luck with your purchase.

Only have a few things to look into before ordering. I need to find out if i do not tick reverse camera and jap radio will wiring be still be there? then i can get uk head unit and just camera lens. Then check insurance compared to a uk car as Quotes of 250 on a uk car at moment

I would most certainly tick the reversing camera, it's elegant, mounted in the boot lid, and you do not want to have to do that aftermarket.
