GR86 GR86- Cars for sale - General Discussion

I read thismorning that Hyundai are bringing the i30N model to a close.

Fiesta ST no longer available new?

I'm sure theres others.

What other choices will there be in the next year for new sports car under 40k?

I predict prices for our GR86's will remain very firm.

My guess is they'll not drop below 35k for quite some time, and never drop below that for mint, low mileage examples.

981 boxters/Caymans are holding well in the 30's and I think will continue to do so.

I sold mine 5 years ago, and it'd still be worth the same today, even with a few more miles on.

As Benno says, 10 year warranty on our GR's, and only 450 in the UK.

However good the Cayman/Boxsters are, theres loads of them on the roads.

Another poster said prices might go up in years to come?

I wouldnt be surprised when most stuff has gone electric.

Did anyone say price fixing 🤣

Yes, looks like lots are going to flippers. Gives me a small glimmer of hope I may be able to secure one for a sensible price at some point if the market is flooded with people wanting to move them on. They’re not worth that premium to me personally. That’s too close to good used Cayman money (I’m aware that is a different prospect).
Agree with your thoughts.
I'm not interested in purchasing a car from a flipper.
The GR86 would be a second car for me anyway.
I will bide my time, hoping the market for GR86's will stabilise in the future in much the same way as the market for the GRY.

Its a potentially odd market at the moment, if Toyota did release another batch then with currency shifts, inflation and market demand then i'm guessing the price will be a fair bit higher than they were originally sold at.

Take the example of the Mustang GT being £31,995 back in 2016 and now £50,986.....

Makes me wish I had bought 2 now, one to use and abuse and another to stick in a barn somewhere.

Yep I wish I ordered one for me and one for the missus. Sell one and use it to pay 8 grand off the other.

Gr86 for 22k :(

The thought of a quick flip to make £6-8k sounds appealing… but only to earn a quick buck for little work. Don’t know what I would replace it with though. So I think in the long run it would be a decision I regret.

Mine will do 1k miles maximum a year. So after a few years I think it will still be worth more than I paid for it. Very rare that happens!

Indeed. The cash in the bank will soon be spent on stuff that may give fleeting happiness but you will not have a GR86 on the drive and should they become collectable and prices do keep going up you will likely never have one again and you will look back and say why did I sell?

Another price reduction!

I think it's worth considering it's the absolute worst time to sell a sports car.
  • Freezing cold
  • Slippery roads
  • Christmas expense
  • Christmas family/time commitments
  • Heating bills gone up loads
  • High inflation and financial uncertainty
  • People just want to be tucked up warm at home
  • No bloody trains running to go and see/collect a car
It will be interesting to see what happens to prices in the spring.

In theory a dealer will buy that 35995 one since they’ve allegedly been offering people 36k. We’ll see what the first trade car goes up for soon I guess, rather than the private ones.

Allegedly. I’ve also heard at least one Toyota dealer would only offer list price. They could both be true as perhaps different franchises / dealers have different views, and non-Toyota specialists can obviously do whatever they want. I want to buy one, but £36k is still a fair bit higher than I’m willing to pay.

£36K would be the absolute limit for me which is the same as you would need to pay for a new RF MX-5 ND anyway which is the closest and only competitor in this price range. So if I didn't have an order in I'd be in the market for one of the private sales that are available at the moment. It's a sore one and I wouldn't exactly be delighted about handing someone £4-£5k extra but it's a very limited car for sale in crazy and unpredictable times.

Although from a buyers perspective, it is a small and niche market with lots of factors like Christmas, expensive finance etc etc so if I was in the position of a flipper and someone waved a solid offer of £34k in front of me then I'd be very tempted to 'cut my losses' to secure a sale and bank around £3k. Maybe not as much as hoped for but still a sizeable chunk of change for doing absolutely nothing.

Dealers have overheads , VAT, ability to PX and possibly cheaper finance (may be not). Private is largely “cash”. Some folk will have speculated but April was a totally different economic situation to now. Wouldn’t be surprised to see 20/30 cars for sale pretty soon , buyers market 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have discussed the possibility of unwanted cars being delivered with two Toyota dealerships in the past and the inference was they would only pay list price or a very small premium.

Like has been said, it’s the worst possible time to be selling a car. It’s early days yet to gauge where the value will settle, but I guess there are some flippers who need to move the cars on straight away, the ‘desperate flippers’ I’ll call them, where the timing of the first deliveries has come at a bad time for selling on.

To be honest most thought they were going to be mid to high 30’s, mainly because that’s probably their true value based on the new car market pricing at present.

I have price points I’m willing to bite at; different price points for different colours, however they’re all a fair bit lower than £36k. I’m comfortable, although disappointed, if that means I may never get one.

While there will only be 400 cars (at least as far as we know), there are a number of headwinds:
  • Rising interest rates affecting those on PCP or remortgaging
  • Heading into a recession; less job security and people taking less risks
  • Significantly rising cost of living due to inflation
  • Expensive fuel (only likely to increase as govt tries to push us into EVs by putting up fuel taxes)
  • A very niche car (low annual sales of GT86’s each year)
  • This doesn’t have the same ‘homologation special’ prestige as the GRY
These may become collectible given the low volumes, however Toyota doesn’t have quite the same prestige as most collectible brands so this may take a while to kick in. It’s also unclear how the government driven transition to EV will impact the desirability rarer of ICE vehicles moving forwards. If you buy a collectible car today from 20+ yrs ago today you can still rock up to any petrol station and fill it up for a sensible sum; that is unlikely to be the case 20 yrs from now when fuel is likely to be taxed through the roof.

You can see I’ll tell myself anything to give myself hope I can still get a GR86 without feeling fleeced 🙂
