GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

It looks like they've addressed most of the issues raised with the mk1 - the seating position, the visibility etc, but what's with that 80s Volvo centre dash?

I was tempted by the Mk1 but as it's kinda similar to my '16 Focus RS, I went with the GR86 instead as it's a RWD "old fashioned" sports car. But this Mk2 looks a more complete car so it's desirable - but worth getting when the Focus is here to stay? Probably not.

Kudos to Toyota for updating an already niche and special car - I bet they've been surprised how well it's been received so thought it's worth updating. Doubt a Circuit version will be much less than a Tax killing £40k+ though.

All interesting and some great comments each way. I'm in the not sold camp with my midly modded car. I've been waiting to do intercooler so if there's improvement in that GR Four marked one in the mk2 that would be interesting if it's a straight bolt on. As others, really don't like the mk2 interior, but it's subjective, I hated the interior of a mate's astra gte back at that time!

I'd expect the MK1 to hold its value as a collector's piece as it is still the homologated version, the Mk2 is just a mass market car.
Guess we'll find out soon enough. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the price of the delivery miles cars currently on autotrader.

That dashboard looks like it was knocked up in a shed ! The way it covers the standard binnacle is just terrible.
They have certainly took some of the sharp angles out of the front bumper, but it seems less aggressive to me.
I'll stick with my current one thanks.

Could be like the new Civic Type-R. The price of the new model was so much higher it made the ostensibly very similar outgoing model look cheap, and prices firmed up in response.

I don’t think Toyota have the cojones to ask £50k for a Yaris though 😂

The dashboard logic is explained in the road test videos though, driver focussed and switches reachable with harnesses.

Personally i love it, inspired by the rally cars -

Most importantly, is there still a WRC centre console badge????
The pre-prod version that journalists have had access to didn’t look like it had one, but the final version may?

I really like the lower front grille.
Power boost is welcome too. Digedy.
Nice to see that they kept the manual.
Honda Civic called and wants its rear-end back.
Seating position is a plus.
Jesus teddy fkn christ. What is that interior?!?! Would you like some more plastic with your plastic. It looks so cheap and nasty. If that dash were a hooker there would be no hope for your future. You ded. And no shower will ever be able to make you feel clean again.. seriously WTF?!??! This is a huge deal as this is where you will spend your time “enjoying” the car. Even the likes of Hyundai with their cheapest offerings invest heavily into the drivers view to give an illusion of driving a car that is more expensive than it actually is. Inexcusable. Im going to take a shower now

No matter how well thought out. Materials, look and finish matter too!

It’s too soon to swap from GR86 to GRY.

It’s too soon to swap from GR86 to GRY…
…
Same thought running through my mind. Have had my 86 for a year now and by the time this arrives it’ll likely have been two years. Possibilities…

I’ll guess it will come under £40K in the UK. Not sure by how much though. It could well have an affect of ‘firming’ the prices of the OG car though. It certainly won’t mean they plummet, because prices will be higher, finance will be higher and availability will surely not meet demand. It does nothing to tempt me out of my current GRY, but I don’t drive mine on track.

Very true, whatever happens the original was an absolute steal for £33.5 with 0% finance. This one will not beat that.

I'm told UK demos are due in June, so let's say July and I'm guessing most would take the new model for the new registration in September.

Just spoken with my local dealer to register interest and was told it will be online orders only through the Toyota website, as with the GR86.

Don't like the dash any more, but would live with it for improved ergonomics and everything else that comes with it.
I've been told the same, likely online only. I was hoping to avoid that this time round.

a bit more regarding UK orders.
  • Ordering available from March - all to be done online, not in centre. (This is so TGB can manage allocation)
  • Production starts in April 24'
  • Demo's with dealers June 24'
  • Customer deliveries due to arrive q3 24'.

This one leaves me very conflicted.

Fair play to Toyota. They've listened to feedback and ragged the crap out the current car to find ways to improve it. It would have been all too easy to release a facelift with a few needless styling tweaks, a digital dash, USB Cs, wireless Carplay and call it done. All enthusiasts should appreciate that Toyota are leaning further into motorsport to improve their road cars.

Obviously, they need to illustrate some of the shortcoming with the original to sell the new version. So it's easy to feel a bit disheartened as a current owner (if you're not planning to or able to 'upgrade' – especially if you've only recently bought one). But the OG remains a brilliant car. I can't imagine the new manual will be a night-and-day upgrade. We may even find it reviews less favourably than the original on British B-roads (as it's a bit stiffer).

The required changes look very cobbled together, aesthetically speaking. The OG is much more timeless, and I think it will age more gracefully.

The new front bumper isn't well resolved. The rear light signature and the interior cockpit feel very 80s and quite cheap. The back looks cluttered and fussy when the the rear brake light is illuminated. I also don't like the location of the GR badge (even though the rear GR bade on the OG is also not perfect). If they'd have made these tweaks and styled them well, I might be thinking of upgrading.

I'm glad they improved the seating position. It's a shame they achieved this with lower mounting turrets (so you can't retrofit lower OEM seats).

I absolutely love the grey. As a black car owner, I've always lusted for a grey version of the GR. It helps the aggressive front grills to pop a bit more while looking a bit understated.

If lots of current owners sell up to buy the new model, I think we can expect used prices to fall in the short term. But who knows?!

To be fair they did say in the Carwow review that the materials in the test cars was not what would be in the cars when they are delivered.

What could possibly go wrong :p but if that sticks, the timing is a lot sooner than I imagined.
