GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Maybe I'm alone here... but I really love that new dash
...together with some analogue/instruments (RPM or RPM+boost) would be spot-on in my dreams...
You arent, i much prefer the new to the old, love the screens in a 2023 corolla, so very happy, hated the old instrument cluster with the small display.

To each their own but if I was building a car from scratch and that was the best I could do I would probably go back to design boxes.

A GRY parked next to an S2K will look much bigger overall. It's bulkier and taller. Same goes for the Miata. Length alone doesn't tell the whole story and is misleading to reference it. The overall exterior body volume would be a much better stat to consider.
Phew, I can finally contribute something to this thread having not driven many of the cars (it’s a good read though). The Yaris does look bigger overall to the naked eye, definitely width and roof height being a factor.

Unsure as of whether this is the best thread to post it:

Event coordinated by Toyota Switzerland, to test the MK2 (both transmission options) at Circuit Du Bourbonnais 🇫🇷 October 21-23.

This is really a great initiative, I love it.
I think Toyota should offer (and support) this kind of events on at least a yearly basis to its GR customers in any country.

That’s because it’s not possible to compare like-for-like pricing since not everyone resides in the same country. Even throughout Europe, the pricing varies greatly.

For a fair comparison and in terms of value or bang for your buck, we could probably use Japan as a benchmark. After all, that's where these cars are made, and it allows us to eliminate the impact of regulatory or import tax hikes.

In Japan, the prices of these cars are relatively similar, yet the Type R outperforms all variants of the GRY and GRC, some of which are more expensive than the CTR. My experience is that the CTR has a far more performance-oriented suspension setup, significantly less body roll, better cornering stability, superior steering response and feel, and an overall stiffer-feeling chassis that results in improved handling.

Don't get me wrong, my GRY is a great daily driver with plenty of power and fun factor. I genuinely like the car for what it is. But in terms of performance, it's no CTR. Nor should it be. I realize the GRY is designed with a different purpose and target audience in mind, so I'm not criticizing it for feeling more subdued.
Mate. The GRY is way more of an motorsport car than the CTR is. For one it's not the hot version of a base model. It's a legitimate homologation special.

That is reflected in the fact that as a platform it's operating in a completely different league than the CTR in terms of performance and versatility.

Show me the CTR doing 56 seconds at a Tsukuba Time Attack event.

Show me the CTR pushing 900-1000 hp and completing the quarter mile in under 10 seconds.

Show me the CTR dancing around a tight and twisty course like this

Show me the CTR competing in Rally around the globe

You claim that a CTR is stock for stock a better performance car. There is a good site that compares cars with each other on their actual measured performance. Nothing subjective about it. Just pure data. Here is the verdict on that comparison.

screencapture-fastestlaps-comparisons-rn36s8b5ho4e-2024-07-10-17_56_25.jpg

The differences are so minuscule that it's basically a wash. And let's keep in mind the CTR has 50-60 more hp, has two fewer wheels to drive which means less drivetrain losses and it has way more rubber on the ground. 265 for the FL5 and 245 for the FK8. Wanna see what happens when you even out those things a bit?

Screenshot 2024-07-10 182259.jpg

The FK8 posted a laptime of 2:02.20. The FL5 did 2:01.40.
The Novidem GR Yaris was the slowest and still just as fast as a FL5 Type R. The others were all faster and the fastest car wasn't even heavily modded. The DTE car had 255 tires, lowering springs and more power thanks to an intake, exhaust and a tuning box. That was it.

The really baffling thing is that Im posting all of this here to somebody who actually owns a GR Yaris. You own a car with incredible potential where the sky is the limit but you evidently don't utilize it and then you make posts like yours? I don't know about anyone else but to me that's not car problem. That's a you problem.

Don't get me wrong. You don't have to use all that potential if you don't want to. Im certainly not doing that either.
But I do know what kind of car I have bought and what it can do. Excuse me for being so blunt but you apparently really don't.

Oh Lord, what a mess. I'm not sure this garbage even warrants a reply, but here goes.

You're throwing around heavily modified GR Yaris stats and cherry-picking tracks to suit your argument because there's no comparable Type R data, or it just doesn't make sense to compare them. And what? Because the Civic Type R isn't rally-bred, it suddenly sucks on gravel? Listen to yourself. Oh, show me a stock GRY lapping the ring in 7:44 or anywhere close to it - see what I did there? Who cares!

You seriously think comparing lap times on paper is meaningful? Those times are set by different drivers, under varying conditions and circumstances. It's hardly a fair comparison.

What's truly baffling is your narrow-minded take and your assumption that owning a car means you can't prefer another. And that ridiculous claim that I “don't utilize” mine properly? You can't be serious.

I've probably clocked more track time in my 25 years of driving than most here. I've been hitting tracks and autocross events for nearly two decades. I'm not a pro, but I'm certainly not a newbie.

I laid out why specifically the FL5 CTR outperforms the GR Yaris in terms of performance, from my perspective. You misunderstood this as a claim about straight-line speed or lap times, and that I somehow dislike the GRY for what it is. I don’t care if the GRY or GRC outpace the FL5 in acceleration tests - that doesn't matter to me. The Type R feels sharper, more responsive, and less numb compared to the GRY, especially in the corners during spirited driving. The gearbox, steering, and stability are just a few aspects where the Type R clearly outshines the GRY. It feels way more connected and engaging to drive. Historically, Honda always had an edge over Toyota in those areas.

I expected more level-headed enthusiasts here, but I guess I was too optimistic. It seems being a radical Toyota fanboy blinds some people, because heaven forbid we see the merits in other cars in the segment.

I'm also super happy about new dashboard screen upgrade - I disliked miniature screen on the old one. Analog gauges also weren't particularly beautiful to look at, they were fine. I like that now it's going to be possible to see two selectable "old screens" at the same time.

I wonder if central console resolution was updated aswell, I always though that screen was a bit low-res for modern car.

As for the boxy dash, I like the idea, I just think there could be few details made a bit better making it stand out. Now it feels a bit underdesigned.

They needed more (Matt) Carbon and Alcantara on the Dash. That would make the interior look really cool!

I’m just looking forward to a future thread when someone decides to graft the mk2 dash into a mk1 GRY 😂

Excuse me, but I think you are seriously going beyond acceptable limits in this discussion.
You dismissed as garbage a post that is all but garbage in my opinion.
You are blaming every one in this forum to be biased and not objective.
This is exactly the same unfair treatment your are applying to your GRY!
Of course this is a forum for fans and owners of the GR cars, but I never found any unfairly biased posts or opinions, maybe except for your CTR-GRY comparison post, to say it all.
Here I found mostly fantastic people (you included, so far) passionate about sports car in general, owning not only GRYs but many different cars they love very much (myself included with my Fiesta ST), most of them very competent and helpful, and ready to praise all great cars are offered by the used and new cars market, BEV included.
One of the best contributors here, @Onehp, has just sold his GRY to go for a Ioniq 5N, and even if many here (myself included) wouldn't do the same choice (at least by now) all of us wished him to enjoy his new car, and many of us are waiting for his review to get precious unbiased info about this very new and interesting sports car.
So, please be a bit less aggressive with your opinions.
You made many helpful contributions to this forum in the past, but I don't recognize your usual good attitude when you attack other members this way.

Well put.

@6mt think it’s time to draw a line in the sand and move on from this CTR debate.

Yes I do think comparing those things is meaningful since performance is an objective metric and therefore it can be measured. That's exactly why people have been doing that with cars basically since they existed and that's exactly what I have shown you. Nothing more, nothing less. You are the person who keeps using the word "performance" so you should know what it actually entails. That's why you have chosen a poor reversal attempt too because you won't be able to show me a stock CTR doing that ring time either because it doesn't exist. No owner has ever managed that. Even big, professional publications have never managed to come close to that. The reason for that is pretty obvious but I refrain from commenting further on it since that's not the point here.

You also can't sneak your way out of this by now adding the modifier "from my perspective". That's not what you said in your previous posts and it's also not how performance works. Your feelings only matter to yourself. A car can drive like shit and still have mind-blowing performance. Case it point: The RUF CTR "Yellow Bird" which was the fastest car in the world at its time.

If you personally prefer the CTR then sure do so. Your feelings are just as valid as anyone else's. I won't be mad at you for that and Im confident that many others on here won't either. We are all petrolheads here at the end of the day. If someone is pulling up to me a in a Mustang I will nod my head in agreement to a fellow petrolhead despite the fact that our cars couldn't be more different from each other. I was recently thinking about a GR86 and I received replies from people who actually made the switch. I fully understand why they did so even though I personally couldn't make the same decision. That's how I roll.

A problem only arises when someone mistakes their own personal feelings and opinions for more then what they are which you are guilty of. What you are doing now with that knowledge is up to you. I personally agree with some others here and will call it quits.

Oh just got in my feed that the FL5 is 17s faster then the GRY mk1 on the Nordschleife in the Sport Auto Supertest which is kinda comparable. FL5 is a better track car (with better track tyres), but anything other then dry tarmac and the balance starts to shift towards the GRY.

To me, basically two great cars that I can appreciate both.

PS: Oh and the 2,2 tonne Ioniq 5 N is 12s faster again in the same test, so by that measure it's better than both, and being awd it can play even when it isn't dry too ;)

PSS: Cars are tools, only fools argue what is "the best eva eva" tool, wise drivers enjoy their tools together ;)

On topic: MK2 thread - new one will do a bit better on track for sure.

There is another chap from Thailand that has a GR Yaris on the GR Yaris Owners UK Facebook group, I think he came from an M2C. He was saying recently the M2 felt numb and that the GR is a blast, much lighter and more responsive and engaging in the corners and the best decision he has ever made. He goes on to say the BMW was just too refined, soulless, and described them as a tank. He even states the GR is lighter than an E30 M3! That's impressive ! He even said the GR is more responsive than anything German, except maybe a Caymen.

I was wondering if he may have ever owned a CTR ? you could possibly meet up for a beer, car chat, and an evening of reflection, he might be able to talk you round to his way of thinking, maybe show you some local roads for the GR. It sounds like he is really enjoying his Yaris at the minute. You may already know him? His name is " Mac Gt" on the Facebook groups.

He might not be in your area but it might be a good driving buddy.

Just out of curiosity, I checked the Toyota France website to understand whether the GRY 2024 stock (300 cars, I recall) had been finally sold out even there.
I see now a proper configurator for the car, but it's not clear if customers in France can still order the car.
Since I'm hearing that in Italy someone is trying to find a way to import new Mk2s from France (I see no legal ways to do it for a yet-to-be-registered new car, actually) I'm curious if someone from France could shed some light about the Mk2 situation there. Thank you in advance.

No, you've pigeonholed performance into lap times and acceleration, treating them as the ultimate metrics. That’s not how I view it. I've detailed exactly where the CTR excels over the GRY - these aspects aren't just about speed.

Performance encompasses a variety of factors, some quantifiable, but most are not. You seem fixated on just the measurable ones, which to me, are among the least significant. Sure, I can list tracks where a stock Type R wipes the floor with a stock GRY, but that’s not my basis for defining performance. Even so, stock for stock, with the same driver, conditions, and tires, the CTR consistently posts better times on most reputable tracks.

And let’s be clear, everything discussed in a forum is subjective. I’ve never claimed the CTR is universally superior. That’s the nonsense you decided to pull from our discussion and attack.

I’ve pointed out repeatedly the specific performance areas where the CTR shines over the GRY. Your selective understanding and misinterpretation skew the entire point of this conversation. You sound ignorant and closed-off to what’s actually being said.

I own a GRY and never used the CTR's advantages to bash it. Unfortunately, that seems to be the only takeaway you’ve had from all this.

You mad or something?

I'm not following your point here. The GRY is a top-notch performer, and I never claimed otherwise. If I thought it wasn’t, I wouldn't have bought one. It’s obviously lighter and more agile than many modern cars, including BMWs, which feel heavier and more detached. It’s pretty clear to most enthusiasts that BMW has lost its edge - those who prize agility, engagement, feedback, and fun in a car that’s quick but not necessarily the fastest. This isn’t a slight on the GRY; it’s actually a nod to how impressive the Type R is, especially considering Toyota's already high bar with the GRY. You really can’t be upset just because I think the Type R excels in the specific ways I’ve described.

The level of negativity and close-mindedness here is staggering, and frankly, I was naive to expect anything different. So, congratulations on attacking someone simply for preferring one car over another in certain respects.
