54, having followed rallying for a long time, drove a chase car in the 1995 RAC for a mate who was competing in a 205 GTI. When the GR was announced, and with semi retirement on the horizon, kids have got their own cars, other half has a Macan GTS, and no need for a company car, the rest they say is history.

In general, car prices have gone up. More spent on emissions, crash and other regulation R&D. More materials. More expensive labour. A weak pound. Plentiful low-interest debt. Leasing. Longer warranties. The bottom of the market rising as old cars fail MOTs or have expensive VED.

Specifically for the Yaris, it's a high cost to practicality ratio and is near the top of its size segment for price. If you need to seat 3 full size humans then the car won't work for you and there are similarly priced cars that will. If you don't need to, there are cheaper cars that are very critically acclaimed.

Conversely, spending power has generally gone down for younger people. And I don't just mean 18-year-olds, I mean all the way up to people at an age where they are thinking about or living the reality of carting kids about. It's easy to reach an age where you can no longer contemplate dailying an effective 2-seater before you can expect to afford this car.

The appeal of cars for this generation has decreased. It's not cool to admit you like cars in a world that understands global warming to the extent we do and it's not a necessity in a large city, where young people are more likely to live. For those who still like cars, I would guess they're more likely to care about something German.

At the same time, the appeal of the car is weighted towards older people. As I said earlier, there are more practical, higher-horsepower cars for a similar price. There is some other appeal that makes us want to buy this car. For a lot of us/you/car reviewers, it's the appeal of the idea of a homologation special(ish). That's going to mean a lot more to people who were around to buy the last set of homologation specials or who were around to watch rallying at its peak.

So I'm not surprised it's mostly people older than the typical hot-hatch stereotype.
Over the last 40 years or so I think you will find that in real terms, i.e. factoring in inflation, new cars are actually cheaper.

Regarding your statement "It's not cool to admit you like cars in a world that understands global warming to the extent we do" I agree that it is not as acceptable as previously to say that you like cars. However, what makes you understand global warming? By the way, it is known as Climate Change now because it covers all bases.

43 years old, once missed LUPO GTI, now I don't want to miss it again, GRY will accompany me until I can't be crazy.

40 when I got mine now 41, not so much a mid life crisis as always had a few silly cars & it’s a practical daily 🚙

I'm 49. All my life had sport cars and some years driving in gravel rallyes. I have the GR 3 months ago and only 1100 km on the clock. I still didnt check It properly but honestly, i think i am too old for this car 🙄.

I'm 37, I was 36 when I picked up the car. I think part of the average age being relatively high is anyone under 40 is not likely to remember when Rally and Rally homologation specials were a thing. Rally isn't as big as it was 20 years ago so even with the other factors "homologation special" doesn't resonate as much. In some ways I wonder if this is part of why it's done so well. It's appeal is to people who are real enthusiasts, and have reached a point in life where they have the funds to buy such a car, in quite a few cases having it as a second car.

Most of my peers & younger seem more interested in the tech in the car, having an auto/DSG box and VAG cars.

Personally I think Rally is the greatest motor sport there is and was too young /couldn't afford the car/insurance when I was lusting after a blue Impreza. Last chance to own a true homologation special...as soon as the car was announced I was sold. Other than a Caterham there's nothing on the new car market I'm that excited about.

So from the responses here we can see that with this car, Toyota have successfully reduced their average owner age from 70.......slightly :D
As you live in Derby, could you find my car that's currently in a holding compound with many others

Once we finally all have our car's in the UK , it would be great for everyone to meet up. This would be a nightmare to organize but I'm sure we could do it. Obviously any owner from all over the world are welcome and in the future we could organise driving trips through the UK and further a field

I'm actually about 3 miles from the toyota factory as the crow flies but I couldn't even get a photo of mine when it was there. Even a couple of friends who work for Toyota Manufacturing don't get access to that area unless its necessary

Just 58 - hence fitting 17" wheels to calm the harsh ride. It has replaced my Boxster but I'm still not sure it was the right move.
What a pity, you need both since they are quite complementary.

I have just turned 39 love my gr had evo’s and subie’s but give to Toyota made a great little car

33 years old. My 2nd fun car.
First fun car was an i30N, which was also pretty great.

After we got the i30N. I found out after a few months I wanted it for myself, so kinda got my significant other to buy her own car so we didn't have to share :ROFLMAO:

My younger brother got a GRY, and after testing it a few times I decided we could live without a practical car anyways, since we have 2 cars now... And here we are...

Fun story... he had ordered a Skoda Octavia station wagon, but when his girlfriend dumped him he cancelled it because he didn't need a big car anymore... So his GF breaking up with him led to us both having GRYs. I should send her a thank you text...
