Have you watched any of the sound system upgrade videos by Cambridge Autosound on YouTube? I seem to remember him saying that those rear speakers are receiving almost nothing from the head unit, which itself max's out quite quickly. I would ideally like to take my GR down to him and have it all sorted (like in his 3rd video on the Neptune Blue), but at around £4k+ it's not a cheap upgrade by any means, especially as I'd have to live in a hotel and travel there and back from ScotlandDoes anyone know if the rear speaker feed is at full frequency or filtered at the head unit?
The OEM speakers at the rear are so small that they only have midrange and above sound output.
Curious to know if the signal going to them is Full Range.
I've tried that using the PUZU and pink noise and RTA but I still don't think the signal is full range. Whether the HU doesn't give out full range (HPF) or there is some sort of resistor on the rear speaker. They are classed as full range coaxials. You can test it by downloading a frequency emulator app on your phone, connecting via bluetooth then setting the balance all the way back so sound is only generated by the rear speakers, drop the test frequency below 100Hz and see what happens.
I use this method to pin point rattles that only trigger at certain frequencies, but can obviously be used to test the speakers.
yeah, i've watched his video on the GR they done. Expensive for sure. Volume isn't an issue as I have minimal rear fill but because my PUZU is the older one without dedicated sub out, I have to run the sub out from the rear outputs. If the signal is not full range, the sub wont get any frequencies to play.Have you watched any of the sound system upgrade videos by Cambridge Autosound on YouTube? The channel's GR86 content can be found at the hyperlink here.
That's exactly what I wanted to hear. So it does not feed full frequency to the rear from the head unit!I had to rewire the PUZU Toyota wiring loom to allow full frequency to be fed to the DSP amp for the rear channels, you loose the fade ability from the headunit, but you can set everything from the DSP amp including fade.
What under seat sub did you go for, looked at this but drew a bit of a blank given the dimensions under the seat. Guess that is why the OEM offering (outside of UK 'grey' spec has the sub located in the boot.
I won't be running rear fill once I do the sub. The car is so small I haven't noticed any improvement with the minimal rear fill I have as I prefer front staging. The rear channel outputs from the factory head unit have a High Pass Filter at 150Hz.
This thread (link below) shows how to modify a Puzu harness to get a full range signal to the rear speakers, by tapping the front channels. I've not fed a full signal to the standard rear speakers, only upgraded ones, but suspect the standard ones would struggle with that.
I've been planning on doing this for a while, adding an amp and using a full range signal for the rear speakers.
It's not worth doing if you're still using the standard fit rears, there's a reason why the bass was cut to them, they won't handle it.
I have previously upgraded the rear to Pioneer 4" 2-way, as detailed in this thread:
GR86 - Rear Speakers
I've previously fitted the Focal kit to the front and was very happy with the improvement over standard, but that was always going to be a first step upgrade. An amplifier, rear speakers and / or a sub was the longer term plan. With this car an unobtrusive build that could be put back to...www.gr-zoo.com
I had originally wanted to do it with a Pioneer or Kenwood 4 channel amp. As I discovered more about the factory system, it became apparent that the DSP in the Puzu would be better to help overcome the...
