GR86 Flat battery after being parked for 2 days

I’ve got to admit I completely forgot about the AA membership included with the car.
I gave them a call on Monday and a lad with his charger showed up an hour later.
He told me the car’s battery is only drawing current at 1 Amp meaning that it’s probably knackered.
I didn’t switch off the engine and instead drove straight to Toyota. They wouldn’t take what the AA guy said and just said they would check the battery and leave it on charge on their “industrial charger”. Next day I was told it’s all a-okay and ready to pick up.

I hate arguing and I don’t drive the car much, so I’m just waiting for it to happen again really at which point they will have to order a new one

After a short drive home, here’s the battery gauge going between 13-14V. During the drive I saw it go up and down, but when parked it only went up while revving.


What the voltmeter does with the engine running doesn't tell you a lot about the health of the battery really.
Just have to wait and see, but I don't think I'd be very optimistic from what you've said...
 
GT86 had similar problems with the original 40Ah batteries. There was a tech bulletin on it and when mine failed eventually after years of my complaints, they replaced it with 65ah one free of charge as there was a bulletin on potential battery issues
I can’t believe they repeated the same mistake with the gr86. Where is your Kaizen Toyobaru?

Seems a little low - should ideally sit just above 14V - AFAIK.

My car has suddenly starting doing this today mid-drive.

Previously has always sat dead on 14 and not moved.

Hope its not a sign that my battery is on the way out….

Car is used fairly regularly, typically 3 times a week for at least 15 miles each time so dont think its down to limited use.

Just to report back on this. Left the GR86 at home on holiday mode where one cancels the keyless entry (explained in the short user manual). After a month the car started immediately. The battery meter was showing 14 volts which is as good as it gets.
So far I’m happy with battery drainage rate. Improvement over the GT86

It's been unused for four or five days, it's true. But it ought to be able to sit there for weeks without having to worry.

Yes I have a dash cam, but in power outlet in glove box ( that switches off doesn't it?)

And I've left the car before and for longer periods.

I've taken the battery out and stuck it on a a charger.. but I suspect it will be knackered. Not good. Car is Dec 2022, so less than a year old. 😭

I thought I had killed a battery on my MX5, even the interior lights wouldn't come on, but I put it on a trickle charger (I think I may have had to fool the charger into thinking there was a battery attached as it didn't appear to want to charge it) Left it for a few days charging and it eventually showed full charge, the battery is still working now 7 years later. (ironically I was having issue with false warning lights recently and thought the battery might be the issue due to its age and replaced it but the battery was fine, the issue lies elsewhere)

My CTEK mxs 5.0 can recover from 2v and my NOCO Genius 10 can recover from as little as 1v, so if you have something similar I'd guess that it'll restore your battery but it may take time. On the odd occasion I've had a problem I just disconnect/reconnect and let the conditioner through another diagnostic. As long as the plates haven't cooked it usually works.
I'd check the 12v socket with a multimeter when the car is off - sounds like it remains active, unless the electrical diagram shows otherwise?

Ah that's interesting to know, well it is recognising the battery and doing something with it, currently showing 2.2V ... actually I think that's charging Amperage ... So I'll leave it and see what happens... Fortunately don't need the car for work tomorrow

It might be recovered but it will be irreparably damaged, below 10v is a no go zone, lead sulphate builds up on the plates which will render it useless.
 
It will be the infamous battery drain from the first gen caused by the alar....oh.

Next response from TUK Being penned as we speak.

I think that depends on the type of trickle charger. I use car batteries to power off-grid electric fencing and the batteries often come back home anywhere between 5-11v when the wife forgets to change them out. I am still using these same batteries from 5 or more years ago (the worst one took 2 weeks to get back though). Lead Sulphate can be removed from the plates with bursts of high voltage, and more modern conditioners have a 'Desulphate' mode for this purpose. You can also improve Desulphation with the use of Epsom Salts, but that's a whole different ball game!

I have quite a decent charger, does everything...except make tea, which is a shame.... anyway stuck the battery back in the car and everything is okay. I even left it another five days unused to see what would happen. No problems.

I can only think I must have left something on first time... I can't believe an interior light would be enough even over a week?... But maybe 🤔. I have no better theory.

Mine was dead in only 3 days of lights being left on! I think it doesn’t help that the bulb is incandescent and not LED
 
Mine just dropped to 2v after being parked up for a week.

12 days ago did a 60mile motorway trip, then last Sunday washed it and it started.

Today nothing and it was 2v when I stuck a meter on it.

Before I had 30days of not used and started.

Usual charger wouldn't work so current using one of those old metal cased 6amp analogue chargers to get some juice into it before swapping over to a smart charger.

I'm consigned to the fact that I'll need a new battery. Car is second batch, delivered Aug 2023 and now covered 2500miles.

Ooft! That doesn’t sound right. When I had the full underbody preservation done on mine, the car was up on a ramp and subject to a full 7 days ‘off the charger’ with no issues come collection time. I did however, put the tracker to Service Mode, disable the Ghost and pulled the Dashcam power lead when it went in. That said, I’ve still had all of these devices doing their stuff for a whole week on my driveway before I’ve remembered to connect the Optimiser; and I think the lowest reading my Tracker dashboard noted was 11.9v. I reckon you’ve got some dead cells or plates maybe? Either way I’d invest in a new battery and monitor for issues. Good luck 🤞🏻.
