GR86 Exhausts

If it could/would pass emissions without it then having a GPF in situ with the guts knocked out of the middle of it would be one solution, not that I’d condone such a thing of course…

Had they put some sort of flap in the rear silencer I’m sure they could have tuned most of the noise out of the cold start. It’s infuriating that even stock it makes a fair amount of noise before falling disappointingly silence once the idle drops!

The stock exhaust is very well engineered for absorbing all the noise, you can't knock it from that perspective, I'm not sure its strictly for cold start though, the old car was the same, back in 2012 noise wasn't really an issue, and I bet everyone's exhaust is still quieter than the stock one fitted to the BMW M8 comp at the end of my road, that is loud.

If anyone is worried about drone, the Legamax Sports have zero drone and is suprisingly quiet when on lower throttle angles

On the quiet side though
You don't happen to have a video of how the exhaust sounds on your car, do you?
I've primarily been looking at the HKS Legamax Premium for a long time, but also the Legamax Sports. However, after hearing how relatively different Conscript's Hi-Power SPEC-L II sounds compared to the sound clips from Japan and the US, I would love to be able to find clips of the Legamax Premium and Legamax Sport, on european cars with GPF as well!

sorry, i accidentally replied to my own post instead of editing out the typos :(

I emailed fensport to enquire about catted UEL manifolds and high flowing GPF solutions. They said they're still trying stuff out on their development car at the moment, so I'll keep my eyes peeled.

A little update on how I'm finding the AWE Touring after driving it over the past couple of weeks:

Firstly, it looks really cool. Having the exhaust tips really fill up the cutouts in the bumper is a great aesthetic upgrade.

Cold starts . I think this will be an issue with any "louder" exhaust... It's not a fault of the exhaust, it's just another thing that's done in the name of passing exams for vehichle tax purposes that winds me up. its SO MUCH LOUDER than normal idling. If I ever get the car remapped, getting the cold start switched off, or at least dialed down a bit would be a high priority. I cant help but think the car would have come with a tuneful exhaust if it didn't have to account for dampening down the cold start.
It's a shame because the regular idle sounds amazing. There's definitely a hint of a Subie burble going on now and it's obnoxious either. just loud enough to give it a hint of menace. unfortunately, I don't get to enjoy it when starting up the car because I'm trying to flee my driveway as quickly as possible so the cold start doesn't annoy the neighbours or wake up the 1 year-old in the house opposite.
I wonder if the Ecutek software will help with the cold starts?

This guy likes it:

Yeah you can map it out. The cold start raises the idle and retards the ignition timing for cat preheating, those options are adjustable.

Looks like you guys in the UK got another cheap axleback option for the GR86. Not sure if this has been mentioned here already?

The Remark Axleback seems to have a better fitment, but I would rather get this just to support a local business? Can’t wait to hear more soundclips.

My friend had an M8 Comp and got rid of it because it sounded so poor due to the latest noise regs. It sounded epic on the cold start and that was it. Once out of that it was really quiet and muted unless you were foot flat, at which point you are breaking every speed limit in 3 seconds. I wonder if the guy on your road has had anything else done to the exhaust.

He had come from the supercharged F Type which sounded unbelievably good which didn't help his transition and dissapointment with the M8 in the end. He said it was too much power for the road and to ever have fun you had to have your eyes peeled in fear of losing your license.

Did a run to Anfield in a M8 Competition - as underwhelming an experience as I can remember.

Never felt properly quick. Fast but too competent and too damned heavy.

Conti GT in a different league. 911 [991’s] on a different planet. [992’s again, too competent]

The only improvement I need to the GR86 is the exhaust. Looking forward to JapFest and hearing some of the Zoo’s mods.

Exhaust shipped today and according to the tracking details should be with me tomorrow. Hopefully I will get it on the car this week and post a pic when installed(y)
same! I received the tracking number yesterday. I'm located in the EU, so shipping usually takes 4 - 5 days, customs clearance might take even longer... So I don't expect to get it installed this week unfortunately...

Can't wait for pics and soundclips!

HKS Spec L mini review now I've lived with it for a bit.

It's not a screamer, it has been described as an "OEM+" sound.
It's perfectly easy to live with on the motorway, it does hum a bit at 3k, but I don't find it intrusive, and you can modulate it out with the accelerator, sit at 75 and its pretty quiet. If anything its welcome as it acts like white noise to the road noise. - I'd certainly not want it any quieter.

I wasn't a fan of the look that much at first but its grown on me, spending the weekend with a friend with a stock exhaust the factory one looks too thick and chunky to me now.

Sound tested at 86dB at 5k RPM at snetterton at the weekend.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase, live in slight fear of hearing the Apex'i, and wishing I'd stuck with that!

I’ve been dithering too long, that one has now been sold !
Slight update on this. Ordered the Spec 2 on 15th Feb, knowing that there was a few months wait for it to come. Bit of a surprise to have a message from DPD on Monday to say ‘we’re expecting your Fensport parcel’ then another to say ‘Order cancelled’ then another to say ‘expecting your parcel’.
Ended up with a big box (and it was bigger than I thought!) of Stainless tubery delivered yesterday. Booked to have it fitted a week on Monday . Happy Chappie!

If anyone fancies the Remark axleback, give me a shout. They're at least £500 from new now, I only put 100 or so miles on it, so a good saving if you're interested.

AWE Track Edition installed today along with personalised reg. Initial impressions are that it is pretty civilised (at least to me!) once the cold start fireworks have subsided! I can see how it could be far too loud for some people however having come from a BRZ with non res. Cobra its actually no louder to my ears, has a much better tone and less drone at cruise. I'm still running the car in so not yet explored the upper reaches of the rev range. So far I'm smiling :)

Has anyone actually got a picture of the euro GPF?

I couldn't obviously see it when I was under the car, is it built into the pipe or the cat?

I was wondering if a factory US pipe would fit, that seems to look identical. I guess theer is a sensor location too that needs adding.

I noticed the front pipe had an extra sensor fitted to it. It looked like a lambda or oxygen sensor to me, ZN8 pointed out it's probably more likely a temperature sensor. But to me, that seemed a logical confirmation that there was some extra filtering in the front pipe which it was intended to monitor, like a GPF.

Post #72 on page 4 of this same thread shows the components and contains a link to a pdf file. Does that help?

I saw that, (admitedly missed the attachment) it isn't that clear though, they look pretty similar, maybe the GPF pipe looks a bit chunkier, that that looks like a heat shield
