GR86 Exhausts

Spec L 004 fitted

Boomy at 3000-4000rpm. Can barely hear anything above or below that, may as well be on the standard exhaust

Top end pull seems to have increased a little maybe the cars just having a good day.

Was holding off on an induction kit as I expected this to make more noise but I'll definitely get one now as its so quiet...

I'll upload the video later
Yeah, seems that the GPF/OPF suppress the sound a lot :cautious:

Just been out for a blast in mine with the Remark. Still loving it. Nice deep growl when accelerating but really quiets down when just cruising. Loud on the cold start but that doesn’t bother me.

I'm still very happy with my Remark. Will look into either induction kits or a panel filter next and I wouldn't mind a bit more induction noise too.

It certainly sounds better and deeper than stock, although with compressed youtube audio and no direct side by side comparison it's somewhat difficult to tell.

I think overall the Remark Axleback is the best value for money GR86 exhaust, so that's what I ended up ordering.

Both the APEXi and Cobra res catback compared very favourably to the OEM exhaust at Japfest. The former sounds quite a bit different and more refined than the Remark Axle-Back (and looks better, although clearly not stock), but I didn't find it to be that much of an improvement to justify the 4x premium over the Remark, and it was still rather inaudible on track unfortunately.

The Cobra was an improvement over the OEM, but sounded a bit too muted and stock-like for my liking. The non-res version might be better for those wanting some more volume.

In any case, including stock, the cold start is always a bit obnoxious.

Id say that's how it sounds in real life actually. I expected more top end and less bottom end.
I think its quite common with cat backs. I had the same with my Perrin on my GT86. It sounded great low down but the noise faded away until it was just engine noise above 5k, I think it's because these aftermarket exhausts use absorption type mufflers, I managed to get round that after changing my front pipe then I got a nice tone through the whole rpm.

What sort of front pipe bearing in mind thats where our GPF is I think? (was it catted?)

Also if the front pipe changes surely the whole thing gets louder low down as well?

Cheers

I had a Fujitsubo decatted dual resonated front pipe. It was one of the only ones that kept the volume down. I tried a Berk high flow catted front pipe before and I hated it, was boomy and turned the exhaust into a switch, instantly loud at any load and on over run, quiet when cruising at one speed. I have no idea what the deal is with the GPF, will it be an MOT failure on particulates if you got rid of it who knows.

Yeah, I had a Cobra high-flow cat fitted at the same time as my Ace CS400 header on the GT86. But I removed it when I realised it was making (or amplifying) rasp. Given I'm happy the GR's power output, I'll be staying away from fiddling with cats, GPF, etc.

Keen to see some pictures or videos of the Remark Axleback exhaust on your cars. Would be great to get a comparison of stock vs Remark too if possible. It's likely going to be my next GR86 purchase later this month.

For anyone that's interested in one, Funky Power are very accommodating and happy to offer a forum discount of 10% if you message/email them. The delivery is an additional £9.50 and the lead time is around 2 weeks.
Glad I saw this before putting my order for the remark in with Funky Power. Thanks!

Something shiny arrived this morning...

Unfortunately, due to not having the car back yet, I'm not going to be able to install it probably for a couple of weeks. When I do, I am going to try and get some comparison videos; however I do only have a cheap GoPro action cam and no way to attach it to the car. So it will be limited to static exterior videos and interior recordings (although I reckon interior recordings are probably the most useful anyway).

What I can comment on so far though, is the quality. Fantastic finish and craftsmanship on the bits I've looked at. Also, the weight....haven't put it on the scales but considering it's a full cat back system, I was surprised how easily I was able to lift the box out to the garage.

Looks great, very interested in your review of that once you've got the car back.

Buying an exhaust is such a minefield! Very tempted to order a Remark based purely off the reviews here but am still concerned it might be too loud (my car lives in an integrated garage and the kids sleep above it so early morning cold starts might get me evicted! :ROFLMAO: )

Has anyone recorded sound levels on a UK car?

Legamax Premium muffler might be a decent compromise, but perhaps too far the other way and I actually want to be able to hear it from inside the car!

Do Japanese cars have the same GPF setup as us or are like the US cars?

Has anyone got a Milltek resonated? Wining for me so far.

I think @WpR has the non-res ?

Yeah, to be honest, I am rather jealous of those from whom the Remark is an option, but I don't think I could live with the loud cold start and possibility of drone sometimes. So I'm left with full catback options, which you pay through the nose for if you want decent quality. I shall just have to justify it that this is probably the only modification I want to make to the car - don't have to worry about extra power with the new engine.

I think the Remark will become more viable once the ECUTEK tuning suite is fully fleshed out, as you'll be able to tune out the ridiculously loud cold start.

Yeah, absolutely. The thing is, I wouldn't want to have an Ecutek tune just to get rid of the cold start - and isn't it several hundred quid straight off the bat, just to obtain a licence? If I was tuning anyway that would be the way to go.

No, Those JDM car do not have the same GPF setup as us.

It would sound a little bit different.

I still have to upload the video that recorded the sound of my HKS Spec L ii which I do not have a chance to do so. Will probably upload sth this weekend
