GR86 Exhausts

I had an IL Motorsport back box on my NC MX5 with the rest of the system stock and it had a lovely tone, it wasn't obnoxious in any way at all, no drone whatsoever at any revs or load.

Having been to Japfest again this year and listened to many different exhausts popping and banging on a totured rev limiter I decided after a year of ownership that it was time to get another exhaust for the 86 and after reading this thread a few times and listening to numerous videos on YouTube Ive opted for the HKS Legamax Premium which seems as close to my old IL of any Ive listened to.

Getting it fitted at Fensport Friday so time will tell if its the right choice!!
Update when you can please :)

There's versions of the Spec L1 and L2 for both GT86 and the GR86, with individual part numbers (see below post), so I don't think it's just different models for different generations...

I think the L2 is just a slightly quieter version. If I recall @Bathroom_Security has the Spec L1, but said it had quite a lot of boom.

Yeah, ~3000rpm (which is about 70mph in 6th) there's a load of boom. Its worse when the weather is cold.

Very exited to hear your thoughts on it aswell, (and maybe a sound clip when it's on?)!
I've heard that it takes some 1000 miles before its fully bedded in, and some say it gets a little louder efter that.

Now we both have gold OZ wheels and will have the same exhaust as well, once mine arrives. Unfortunately, the dealer I've chosen is having a hard time getting it from HKS, and I've therefore waited almost five weeks on it now, but hopefully it will arrive soon!

Hi Hansen any chance of a picture of your car with the gold wheels. Mine red as well so would like to see how that looks .

I had it fitted this morning at Fensport and I really cant recommend the service from them enough, simply an absolute pleasure to deal with...it was a morning out discussing cars and Adrians GR Yaris race car which is absolutely amazing, they even checked tyre pressures, oil etc.

Fit of the Legamax is perfect and I really wasn't sure about the burnt tips but they look amazing on the car.

Noise wise its noticeable in the car when pulling through the torque range and quietens down past 4.5k, its not that noisy at all but as per previous IL Motorsport on my NC the sound improves with a few miles on it and the wool or whatever they put in it blows about a bit!!

It definitely wouldn't suit all but I didnt want to sound like I was doing 120 mph when I was only doing 40!!

Oh!! and I got a very cool sparkly HKS sticker with it!!

I will get some vids of the sound over the weekend and post later, I think you will like it Mr Hansen and you have made the right choice.

Here you go - to avoid derailing this thread too much, I'll link you to another thread where I posted some pictures: "Gold or bronze wheels" - hope it helps!

Looks great, fits the white perfectly! The sound sounds like the exact thing I'm going for - I want more of an OEM + sound, but still in the JDM style 🙏
I've been looking through the internet for so long before I ordered it myself, but I don't believe I have found a single video of it on a European car with GPF.

Hey @pasty I bought mine from vipmotorsport.co.uk It took them a while to ship, but costs from UK to Poland were fair, that's why I decided to go this route. All of the US sites wanted around 800$ for shipping

That's a good bit cheaper than elsewhere, and yeah, shipping from the US is prohibitively expensive. Cheers.

AWE Track Edition update:

Its been a few weeks now since fitting the AWE Track exhaust to the GR86 and I thought it might be worth giving you a quick update.
Fit and finish are very good, the black tips look great on my red car and fill the original cut-outs nicely. First things first, yes it is loud, very, very loud especially at cold start, so if this is an issue for you I wouldn't even consider it. Once warmed up you get a nice low down burble at idle and as the revs rise more of the Subaru boxer tone rather than the 'scream' of some of the other cat. back offerings out there. Whether you prefer this or not is going to be down to your own personal preference.

Is there 'drone'? Well yes, when holding steady revs. say 3-4K you can't get away from the fact that you hear the one tone (I don't mind it too much) so drone it does. However when driving 'enthusiastically' it sounds fantastic from low down right through the rev range.

Bottom line, every time I get into the car it puts a smile on my face, making an already fun car even more fun and that works for me..... Just make sure you have understanding/like minded neighbours!!

I think the track edition is expected to have drone since it does not have the 180 technology that touring has.

I wonder how much louder the track edition is versus the touring on cars equipped with GPF filter. Is there some video online that compared these 2 exhausts?

I was about to buy the touring edition from vipmotorsport but they dont have it in stock, so i started thinking about the track edition since i could have it sooner. And maybe later down the road buy the conversion kit to convert it to touring if the track would be too much.

Appreciate any info on touring vs. track loudness on cars with GPF.

There is a Bros Fourr Speed YouTube video that compares Track with Touring (albeit on non GPF car). I would say that there is probably little difference in volume the track is perhaps a little louder. The main reason people seem to go for the touring is to reduce drone but for me this doesn't matter and the track has a useful weight saving over the Touring and over stock.

As we've been developing a front pipe back system for the GR86, I've been paying close attention to the list of requirements most frequently mentioned when considering an aftermarket exhaust system for the GR86. It appears the general consensus is a system that gives an increase in exhaust volume and note to justify the spend. Idle to have a noticeable increase in volume with nice bass note but nothing to upset neighbours, even on a cold start. General low speed, town type use to still have character, a nice sporty exhaust note. You're aware you have a sports exhaust, but it's totally in keeping with the overall quality presence of the GR86. A system that you could happily live with for a daily driver, no drone especially at Motorway speeds. All of this plus a system that really engages. The ability to provide that grin factor when you're into the higher rpm range, when you want an exhaust to really sing and make all of those sports system sounds on gear shift blips and over run.

All of the above plus a well designed system, high fabrication quality standards, ease of install and perfect fit.

The C-TEC Performance GR86 V band stainless front pipe back system will be announced here very soon.

Hi all, new member here :)

I already have a cat less UEL header installed on my GR86 and I'm looking for a cat back that's just a bit louder than stock but with 0 drone!!

Not sure there's such a thing (other than the stock one) as all that I've tested or heard so far had some level of drone/boom/raspiness.
Invidia Q300 (on my ex-GT86) was the closest to my requirements I could find, but the joy lasted until the first track day, after which it developed some "issues" (not really drone but a noticeable shift in tone/volume) around 2.5k rpm mark.

Welcome aboard. I can vouch for the HKS Spec-L 2 as having no drone that I can hear, and it's also not much louder than stock; however, that's with an otherwise standard exhaust. I guess an aftermarket header with no cat will make it louder.

I think you are the first owner I've heard of who's changed the header (assuming you're in the UK) - did you have to get the car remapped? Going by experience with the old car, a remap was essential when removing the main cat, or the car would throw a check engine light, but I didn't think there were many tuning options like Ecutek available yet.

Hi Biggie.

I only have experience with one exhaust and that's the AWE touring. There's no drone whatsoever but it is loud.

It's perfectly reasonable when cruising on a partial throttle and as i said before, zero drone, but on full acceleration, downshifts and especially cold-start it is noisy.

I'm intrigued about your catless headers and how you got around the CEL. Please share 😊
