Deliveries have started at last (for some), so, first impressions...

Have put a few miles on my automatic today. Auto box is fine for anyone who is waiting changes well has sport and snow mode. Initially compared to say a BMW ZF 8 speed the lever is a bit clunky to move between P R and D but I need to give it time might just be where it’s new.

I’d like to turn off the keyless entry as I’m never sure if the car is locked when I leave it. Have tried the various options mentioned in other part of forum but no luck yet. Might be a dealer visit

Sometimes the headlights stay on when I leave it and sometimes they don’t not sure how I sort that

Overall very pleased with the car although had hardly any fuel in it and got to petrol station with zero showing on trip!! Not very impressed with that

24hrs in. Initial thoughts, will be a bit at random. Been a long weekend but I've enjoyed it.
  • Crap weather so not pushed or leaned on it in corners but picks up so well under 5k. Even short shifting it's easily up to NSL+
  • Brakes are strong, although again not pushed hard. Car does move about under braking which is nice to feel again.
  • Ride is far more compliant than expected. Even on the crap roads by me. Lots of then are now breaking up after the last cold snap.
  • I know it is but it feels like a sportscar on the road. Long nose, wide hips. Stable but playful.
  • Paint soft as expected. It's clean but I'll get a detailer to do it for me. Knew this since i got the wing. breathe on it and it marks.
  • Wheels will be a pain to clean so coated those.
  • Fitted the wing. As nerve wracking as expected. Centre holes are 6.5mm, outers should be 12mm. Wing flexes to get it into the outer holes so it's going nowhere. The hardest part was putting the screws back on the outer edges of the standard wing. Didn't seem to go in easy but by this point I was knackered. You do see it when reversing but you have the camera anyway.
  • The camera is fine but have a hard time trusting it yet. I've always reversed using mirrors anyway and only use the camera for the marks to find the edge of the bay. I forgot how wide it's hips were. Same as the last and same as the Z4 was too.
  • MPG high 20's but does drop around town. Fine for a tight engine, I'm still figuring out settings and playing with it so it's mostly that. First commute is tomorrow which will be interesting.
  • Like the menus in the dash cluster. All you need and nothing superfluous. Love the dash animations
  • Headunit - A little glitchy getting it to bluetooth the first time but after that was OK. Don't play music via bluetooth as it's painful. You connect with ignition on, start car and has to do it again. Also less control too. Also no point when you have Android Auto. The start warning screen I'd like to turn off. I'm sure there was a way.
  • Radio - FM, AM and DAB. Again DAB is new to me too. Works well and the seeking of channels is better too. Nearer how you'd tune a TV in. Speakers are surprisingly good. Even if there's no rears It's more than acceptable. Lots of settings to play with here. Like the equaliser is at a touch of a button on the station or track you're on so you can fine tune on the fly.
  • Android Auto - First time I've had it so was new to learn. Works very well. Once connected via cable you don't need to touch the phone. Was confused at first where the apps were but once I understood it's all controlled from the head unit then it was fine. My audio app is supported which is cool as I have all my music as MP3's and not via a streaming service.
  • Climate control works well. Big improvement over the vRS and gets up to temp quickly too. Love how it looks too.
  • Lights are very good. Not that much difference to high and low beam but miles better than the halogens in the vRS
  • Steering wheel is lovely to hold. So nice to have controls on a wheel but not too many. It's judged right.
  • Heated seats work well. Wouldn't have spec'd them as it's extra weight but better than expected.
  • Heel and toe needs work but expected this. I've said multiple times it's a car that trains it's driver. Every input as to be precise and not half hearted. I bought it for this reason. The vRS could do 8 tenths without trying. In this you're integral to making it happen.
  • Indicators I got used to by today so no big deal. Still don't have muscle memory for wipers as it's opposite.
  • Wipers seem OK for now. Will do Bosch Aerotwin at some point.
  • Like most Japanese cars the heated mirrors are on a button with rear screen. Skoda was on the mirror switch so was almost always on. Something to get used to pressing when I start off.
  • The airbag light on the roof is stupid. I'll have to cut some electrical tape to cover it.
  • Not too sure on hill hold. I'll pass judgement by end of the week.
  • Seats are comfy. Nice and low and good driving position. If wheel was a fraction closer it would be perfect.
  • Quite lively at low speeds. Few times I've wheel spun out of junctions. Again, something to relearn, nothing wrong. The steering is superb and I still can't get over in these conditions how it turns in so well and the rear follows. Can't wait for warmer roads.
  • TPMS is fine. Wasn't working initially but then after about a mile it was reading OK. All at 2.4 which rose to about 2.6 after driving a bit. Cool to see it update in real time so depending on how you drive you see which tyre heats up faster.
  • Oil level was correct. Will still do a change at 1000 miles.
  • Not noticed much attention to it out and about but doesn't stop some nutter parking next to it, even though it's miles from the shop. Back to night/really early shops to avoid the muggles.

  • Attention online though is insane. My phone hasn't stopped. I don't do FB but IG and in particular Twitter has been nuts. The only downside is the odd person chasing for business. I'm not mentioning who but I have a rule that if someone is chasing me to use their services then I'm not buying.
Overall I'm very happy. Been years but whenever I buy a new vehicle I always get the feelings of doubt the next day. Did I make the right decision, the money aspect, was the chase better than the catch? But it definitely is. This is just the start of the journey with it. So many days to look forward to.

I'll be quite quiet over the next few weeks with Christmas. I also have a car to enjoy. Years since I've said that and feels great to say.

Thanks for this @KobayashiMaru86 , your comprehensive, thoughtful posts are always worth a read in my opinion and I appreciate your scribing endeavours. Some really useful interesting stuff there.

Re. the 'parking magnet' issue as quoted above - it's amazing how many times this has happened to me with some of the nicer cars I've owned. You make the effort to park as far from the store entrance as possible in a deserted province of the car park, and come out to a next door neighbour.

I think there's various possible explanations for this:
  • They think yours is a nice car and therefore you are less likely to smash their doors in when getting in, or scrape their bumper when you leave.
  • They think yours is more appealing to thieves so theirs will be 'safer'.
  • Theirs is the same make (as in this case) and want to bask in the reflected glory of yours.
  • They love cars and want a closer look at yours, whilst exercising utmost care when parking.
  • They have impaired sight, and/or are stupid.
Some of these possible hypotheses are, of course, more worrying than others.
 
Have had mine 2 weeks, completed 500 miles... every single journey has involved some sort of oversteer. The car has grown on me. The clutch and gear shift are improving, not a good as the Yaris Gearbox or clutch but getting better. I find my clutch feels very light and it was on or off but as miles increase it is getting better.

The steering lacks a bit of feel but its is so predictable as is the chassis, im really suprised at the brakes they have great feel and the abs kicks in just at the last minute.

Driving everywhere with the TC fully off (2nd setting) and track mode on open roads.

Im impressed with the sound system, not used cruise control once but every drive hads been a laugh and im enjoying it alot more than i thought i would.

Things that annoy me so far, the cabin noise/wind noise is a bit louder than i expected compared to the Yaris also getting in and out is a bit funky being old but am loving the thing its impressive on track too,

Toyota managed the power, gearing, ride and handing just right for our UK roads... The fact im taking this car out in the icy conditions over my Yaris says louds about its fun factor.

Always thought it was a sheep thing. Perhaps it was lonely.
I do tend to write a fair bit but it's my way of dumping my thoughts out. Can always come back to reflect on later. Often end up answering my own questions that way too. Done it for years

One more thing. The sticker inside had a date of 08/08/22 which I think is the date it left paint shop/screen was put in. So 3 days after my "In Build" notification. It doesn't matter, just an observation.

Ive found you really have to push it left to get it from p to r and r to n as the drawings on the stick show, n to d is just straight
 
  • We didn't get a litre of oil in the boot either. Don't know if Toyota do this or not. Know VAG group manufactures do but many models burn oil. Something else to charge for I guess.
  • Didn't get the Issho so have asked TGB. Also would like a keyring and fob case too
  • Cold start is similar to GT86. Will be just as loud too once there's a full exhaust system.
  • Checked pressures last night and were all 2.5bar so set back to 2.4 and reset TPMS. This will be a car sensitive to pressures.

Also does anyone have the link for the current list of Toyota accessories?

Let us know what response you get from Toyota on the GR goodies, although my understanding is it's down to the dealer's discretion on what you get with the car.

Does anyone know how to set the keyless entry so that both doors unlock when you touch the drivers door handle? In the manual it says "this setting can be changed" but doesn't say how, and I can't find any option on the dash except for disabling keyless entry entirely.

I'm sure there was a way to do it with the GT where you held the unlock buttons with the drivers door open or something but it doesn't seem to do anything. Not sure I'm doing the correct procedure. I've read that it's impossible to open both doors from the key now (except by double tapping unlock), which you could change with the GT, so evidently the systems are slightly different anyway.

Does the following work in the dash menu?

Switch car on > Settings > Car > Keyless Entry System > Drive Door Unlock > Select 'All'

Haven't got the car at the moment to double check, but I am pretty sure I didn't see that option. When I get the back, I will have another look.

This is what I saw from a US vid - so not sure if UK spec cars will have the same options...

Did 50 miles today, what a wonderful thing to drive, even under 4k revs! I'm so glad I held out for it 😊

Android Auto almost blinded me this morning when I left the house in the dark so had to turn that off. Realised when I got to work that you need to turn the overall brightness down 1 click (it's the dial to the right of the steering wheel) so that it'll go into Dark mode properly.

Clutch and indicators seems normal already.

Yeah I found this too, must be on full from factory. it looks like you can decouple the brightness of the head unit from the rest of the dash when searching through the menus, that's how I found the reference to the dial, which I rather like [emoji4]

Can confirm the Starbucks I went through this morning had that high a window I had to get out the car to get my coffee😂
