GR Yaris Buying GRMN parts in Japan

Ah! That's what I was hoping would be the case when I went. Can I ask which one your wife visited? And was this recently or a while back - just wondering if they've changed their policy.

Also, do you know what you paid for the gear knob and wheel? Many thanks!

Gearknob was £65
Steering Wheel £170

Well, armed with the part numbers and the knowledge that others have managed it, I decided to try my luck again at the GR Garage in Koto City West Tokyo, before I leave Japan tomorrow.

I spoke to a different chap this time (mainly through the power of Google Translate). Sadly, I got the same response. Their policy is to only sell you GR Yaris parts if you are a registered owner in Japan with the correct documentation. Doesn't matter if you have proof of UK ownership/a VIN number, etc.

Apparently it's always been this way, all other GR Garages are the same, and their policy hasn't recently changed. So, I'm leaving Japan empty handed, a bit disappointed and slightly confused.

On the plus side, they had a couple of nice motors in the showroom.

I am really sorry this has happened to you as sadly that’s just not true re the vin , as these parts were purchased below without a vin and with no issues and no policy , invoices attached

Were you friendly and did you show him a photo of your GR Yaris?

Old thread but yes I asked 3 seperate gr garages to sell me the grmn crossbrace and rear seat delete kit and rims but they all said they are grmn vin locked. Whatever you see on gr parts is available from Japanese dealers like the carbon hood, Swan neck wing, shifter. Odd choice letting everyone have most of the important bits but then vin locking the rims and crossbrace and even the just the carpet.

At least we got the important parts and it seems they are doing this so that the Grmn will remain special and people won't convert their cars.

About 6 months ago, I got the rear seat delete from an Australian website. They couldn't supply the cross brace, but I got it from easycars.jp. And I emailed someone just this morning in Japan, asking if they could find a part number and/or order a GRMN steering rack. I'm hoping it's a parts bin item. fingers crossed

Toyota has a huge potential in making money if they develop new parts and sell them. Imagine engine upgrades directly from them. For example look at Omori factory and what do they offer for Gtr owners. I am disappointed why the bucket seats are exclusive to Grmn since they are considering essential to people who track their cars and it got discontinued.

True, Akio Toyoda did a lot to encourage the revival of performance car culture at toyota. Hopefully the GRGT, MR2 and Celica will encourage more toyota developed optional performance parts. I've seen a prototype light weight dual mass fly wheel, I'm hoping that makes it into production.

I wondering if the airbag on the GRMN recaro is a toyota developed part, because I've never seen a standard pole position seat for sale, with an airbag anywhere. Sucks, because, the GR yaris has a seat airbag, any replacement seat needs a seat airbag to be road legal in Australia.
