GR86 Broken

Sorry to hear about your engine failure. I'm now concerned about the longevity of my car. If your car hasn't been abused and it has only done 5K miles then Toyota really need to do a root cause analysis to establish the origin of the failure. A spun bearing i likely to do with oil not getting to the bearing or a fault during the engine build. Has the car had an oil change since you purchased it?

I'm just spit balling but maybe... Oil channels blocked, pickup tube blocked with RTV, open up the oil filter and look for debris, could the oil pump have failed? I wonder if due to driving on the left and the many roundabouts in the UK we make a lot of right hand turns...

I am also concerned about this, however, I did reach out to my toyota dealer a few weeks ago to have the Oil pan removed to check for RTV. They advised me not to do it, because in order to do that they would need to remove the whole engine, blah blah blah (bollock).

To a point that I told them. "Look, I track the car once in the while, and I want to avoid blowing up my engine and having toyota voiding my warranty". To my surprise they told me that any GR badge has warranty on track, including my car GR86, and if anything was to happen on track due to a malfunction of the car, warranty would cover it. I had 2 persons (Mechanic and Sales guy) confirming that we do have track warranty.

I didn't really know that we had warranty on track, since it's not documented anywhere, or am I the only one?

Perhaps a topic for a new thread @NunoHenriques , let's not derail Gregs thread.
Only ever seen evidence for track warranty on the GR Yaris, so unless it's in writing it's not covered.

I would advise that if you use your car on track you should fit an accusump (or similar), oil cooler and use the appropriate oil (not the 0w-20 that it comes with).

One for another topic but In your Service & Warranty booklet it provides a list of conditions for the Warranty. The only point mentioned where warranty would not apply is in the case of misuse by racing or overloading, that's open to interpretation somewhat but a track day and racing are 2 different things.

EDIT: Chris beat me to it.

Because they want to know the circumstances it failed under. Without knowing that, they can't link cases and potentially fix a lot of ticking time bomb.
Fair enough I guess.Thought like Greg, if they started asking me that, I would feel like they were trying to identify some measure of culpability so they could deny a warranty claim, so I can see why it would raise concern.

That is a big caveat, I use 5w30 so warranty is not voided. However I would love to fit an accusump & oil cooler, but if I do that then warranty will be voided for sure, therefore is a no go

Think everyone maybe getting a bit excited about this. I’m pretty sure this is a one off. There are plenty these cars around now with more than 4k on them and doing fine.
The main thing is that doing anything to the engine other servicing it just gives Toyota the option to turn down warranty work.
My car will be kept stock and the oils regularly checked for the foreseeable just so I know I’m fully covered.
I certainly won’t be changing the factory oil until a year as Toyota don’t tell you to do it. This potentially stops the engine running in fully and will be tighter.
Engines are mostly hand built so the potential for human error is there.
Just my opinion on this anyway.

I'm just back from the dealership to pick up one of their loan cars so i finally have a set of wheels: a mighty thrumpy Aygo X Extreme. Which is perfectly fine for now.

Dealer said they're still waiting on Toyota to tell them the next steps and what to investigate, and for them to make their decision.
He said they might decide for a like-for-like courtesy car, which I doubt.
Now I have a loan car from the dealer in the interim, they can diagnose to their hearts's content.

Let's not get carried away by what happened to the engine. They haven't shared anything with me sorry from a spun crank bearing. I could be unlucky, shit happens.
I had the oil changed at 1000 mi after run in, outside the network as the computer said "no, not needed", with proper oil filter and oil.

It was sad to see the car in their yard though, even if I'm sliding away the more the aggravation I have with the dealership...

Ooof.

From What Car: "The Toyota Aygo X has a 71bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine that’s free from any turbocharging or hybrid electrical assistance. Acceleration is best described as "pedestrian" (0-62mph takes at least 14.9 seconds)".

Wouldn't be my choice with my own money, but it beats asking colleagues to make a long detour to bring me closer to home without walking around fields in the countryside or being an actual pedestrian.

It's funny how it doesn't get any faster the more you push the throttle, though 🤣

Hopefully the 1k oil change isn’t part and parcel of the issue especially if you had it done at a third party garage.

The courtesy cars Toyota give are a joke. Especially when we have sporty models. Even if it was a Corolla it wouldn't be so bad. I had the Aygo X last service and what a crock of 💩 that was!

It’s because dealers don’t want to pay the money for random cars to be abused. Cheap and cheerful is all they want.

It's 4 wheels and and engine, taking me to wherever I want to go without depending on colleagues or favours from work. And it doesn't cost me anything, so I'm fine with it.
Some might say it's the least that can be done and coming a few days later than expected, but we got there in the end 🤷‍♂️

Cheap and cheerful can be amusing, it reminds me of the cars of my youth.

It's a fair point though - I know someone with an M2 Comp that got a hole in its oil cooler and 2 hours later was in a 740e courtessy car from BMW Assist. Different price point but excellent service.

Sorry about the car Greg, I hope all gets sorted by Toyota soon.

I have a guilty pleasure though, I love the looks of the Toyota Aygo X. Especially in Exclusive trim in that metallic green colour that they do. Never driven one though. 🙄
