GR Yaris 2K Android Headunit with wireless carplay, hacked CANBUS, DSP & Factory Wiring

Been snowed under with work and my bike needed some attention. But soldered the connector and my research paid off. A purrfect fit

Talking of purrrfect fits, I went with the full sleeper install and hid the Sony’s behind the the stock JBL covers

Tweeters are not exactly facing the driver blah blah blah. Let’s be real we can hear the sound of every leaf we drive over, and that’s how I like it. Anyway, that stuff does not matter. Huge improvement in sound quality already

My digital gauges are all GR Yaris Blue now too

Hey Nikoel,

Happy new year!

I was wondering if you're any closer to a kit of parts for the android upgrade, I really like what you've put to get and would be keen to give it a go.

Happy New Year to you too

So Ive done two of these for a friend of mine who also owns a Yaris

I would be happy to create an other, but only for those with JBL systems. I do not have any experiences with the non-jbl cars (they do not exist in Australia) and I just don't know if any of plugs at the back will be the same or features will work

All the best

And speakers have been installed and new EQ profile has been set. Bought these donut, foam rings with rear inserts. No idea of they do anything, but all the professionals install them, so I thought to do the same. Got custom offsets too, which fit the holes perfectly. In the end I decided to go forth and get all the connectors. Took ages to get to me from china. Splice count is still sitting at 0

Hey @nikoel - Last post was early this year, but I would love to upgrade my screen as well. Could you please share the info on which unit did you buy, and the other parts? as well as the custom mount. I looks fing awesome!

Thanks

Hey @nikoel. I love how much time and effort you have put-in to documenting your arm wrestling with the GR's headunit. Thanks heaps for sharing - inspirational stuff! I've just bought a secondhand '23 Rallye and am keen to upgrade the head unit - for functionality, screen real-estate and sound quality.
Any chance you can provide links to the parts you've used - head unit, bracket, frame, etc?

Unfortunately, there are no links. It was developed with a few Chinese contacts I had (maybe they pushed it forward? However, even they were reluctant, as there were so few of our cars produced and even fewer people who would consider purchasing them). The Android head unit would be the easiest option, as it’s a straightforward off-the-shelf part (just make sure to buy one with the highest specs; mine cost around $800 AUD for the screen alone). However, for me, it was a hot mash of various products and quite a few duds that I did not document here. Thankfully, the CANBUS did not require much work, as a lot of it was already pretty similar to existing Toyota cars.

In the end, I was either going to develop it into a product and buy ~50 and ship em out or, if there wasn’t enough interest, treat it as a learning exercise to better understand how the car functions and to create something unique. Given the amount of attention it received, I decided to leave this post up for anyone who wants to attempt it, so they know it’s possible

I don't know if there is something off the shelf of that or similar quality available

I hope you don't mind me adding to the thread, been following the progress for a while.
Well beyond my capabilities, but noticed people talking about an off the shelf option.
I'd been searching and found a company called idoing2006.com who you may possibly know.

I watched an Ausi lad Youtuber called marc and cars instal their 10.2 inch Android 12 radio head unit, looked an impressive piece of kit, just had to make 2 small angle brackets, left it all fully reversable as well.

Had a look on their site and they have quite a few optional accessories you can add,
Back up camera.
Ram + Rom.
DVR Camera & OBD2

Bunch of thieves—the price is definitely outrageous enough for me to reconsider. To give everyone an idea of what they’re paying for, the pre-amp/head unit/screen is $1,500.00 (https://strathfieldcarradios.com.au...stem-with-dab-apple-carplay-and-android-auto/), so $1,300.00 for what... the CANBUS solution, connectors, and the plastic mount? Even with the install, it's hard to justify. At $150/hr labour that's a full day...

For those who are looking into it, make sure to ask two key questions: How will the external microphone be wired up, or is it using the original microphone from the car? And how will the rear camera be mounted—specifically, is there a CANBUS solution that will dynamically change the track based on steering angle? Does the solution use the included camera, or do you need to replace it with the one that comes with the head unit and disassemble the rear hatch?
