Hi,

I have a gen 1 GR Yaris that’s completely standard.
I’m happy with the performance but feel like the car could do with a bit more low down power when exiting slow corners.

I’m debating having the Toyota remap or getting the String Theory remap when I get the Akrapovic exhaust fitted.

For those that have the String Theory remap or the Toyota factory remap, do you notice a significant improvement after getting the remap done? I’m happy with the top end performance of the car but a boost when exiting corners would be welcomed as I feel this is where my GR is lacking compared to my Subaru P1.

Off the shelf maps are not going to be a great help here. Most maps only make a difference on boost and higher up the rpm range. To achieve what you want you really need some hardware modifications and a custom re map. You need to reduce the back pressure on the turbo to improve the spool. You will notice some benefit with a remap but for what you want a lot more work is required. I went down the same path and I have modified the entire length of the intake from air inlet right up to the valves and then from the turbo back. It was not until the third remap that I really found what I was looking for

The remap from Toyota is dreadful value and marginal performance gain. Companies like Litchfield and garage whifbits have proven packages. I would add that there are still standard off the shelf remaps and then there a custom remaps that are individual to each vehicle and bespoke in their characteristics. Litchfield did mine and the third remap I told them what I was trying to achieve and they delivered. It was night and day the difference from the previous remap which was far more generic.

What power are you running at now if you don't mind me asking? And how does the torque delivery differ from standard?

It was 353 before the HJS and 425nm at 4400. That was with ECU TEC and a remap done on the dyno. It was the usual file they use and tweaked a bit for the hardware mods. Good results but after a while I just did not think the dyno was matching up to how it feels on the road. It was great if you were on it but it felt lazy off boost and really anything below maybe 3500-3700. I got the HJS with the hope of improving low end response. It did but nowhere near what I thought it would and I felt I lost mid range. The car was good but you could plant your foot and it would build build build but not really get above 1.3 bar boost before I was running out of road. I was frustrated and I was starting to want my M2 back. My Mrs said don’t go back to your old flame, sort your current one. I was going to go syvecs but after chatting with Litchfield about where the car was and what I wanted they got it back in to check the hardware for boost leaks and the solenoid valve. As I had concluded all the hardware was fine. The tuner took the car out for a couple of hours with himself, another guy and the lap top to remap it on the road. They addressed the areas I thought it was lacking. I got it back with a smirk and a “you’ll like that” the HJS has to be remapped to be able to take advantage of it. It is now 365bhp and max torque is 3700 and 440nm and holds much longer.

The car sounds different, it feels different and it’s way quicker. The turbo gauge whips right through to 1.6 bar and then you’ll see it taper off from around 5500…..I can’t really look at it too carefully then as it’s going way to fast. 1st gear is almost pointless. I have gone from planted out of the S bends near home to feathering the throttle until I am nearly out of the corner otherwise I would run out of talent.

I have gone from thinking about moving on to simply loving it.

Besides the warranty (which a lot of cars are falling outside of now anyway) I can't see any value in the Toyota remap vs a proper custom tune really. Whether you then add more aftermarket parts or not.

Personally I have a Milltek resonanted, opf delete and ITG intake and made 321bhp. Norton Tuning near Worksop did a custom / tested map for me as well.
