GR86 Focal 2 way component OEM retrofit

Tips from day two, driver doors.

Yesterday I had 15*C weather, today it was around 4 outside. Drawbacks? All plastics hardens and are harder to remove. I've broken one door clip, gladly it was in place where it meets front dashboard so won't be noticeable. I've left mats overnight in car trunk - they were hard as brick and glue was not sticking to anything. Had to make a trip to my home and warm them up with hairdresser. On plus note, the stock glue came easier than yesterday...

Moving on:
If you are all in, to remove the plastic vapour barrier, follow it in this manner - use a sharp knife, and cut out inside of the plastic sheet, leave the outer edges. In this way, it will be significantly less hassle to work on it, and you can pull this part like a rope and goes much easier.

No further pics, I've replicated what I did on passenger side.

Another key point, if you are covering door openings, the part, from where steel lines for locker and door opening comes out (black cable with foam).

Make a cut in mats, closer to rear of the car, rather than front. On driver side, they are obstructing with window mechanism, making funny noise at the begging of the pull downwards. I had to work this out without removing the mat, next time I'd be smarter.

Apart from that, nothing much, same as passenger.

The sound :)

Oh my gosh, finally this car has audible radio. My goodness. On stock OEM setup, my "threshold" of loudness and quality, was around 20-21 or 22 if going faster - anything further than that sounds absolutely garbage.

With Focals, at 19 it's insanely loud and you CANNOT HEAR THE CAR INSIDE! I was stoked. I'm running AWE Touring exhaust and speakers are louder than exhaust and car noises while cruising with engine below 2500 RPM.

The sound is on next level. Finally, finally... you can distinguish various instruments in the songs. In short summary. Highs are clearer, mids as well, bass is also more precise. Improvement at any level. Vocals are significantly better. The separation on mids and lows is there. It's not a single blur when listening but clear distinction from each sound - drums with beats? No problem. Not the cinema quality or good end hi-fi, but audio is not the weak point now. Highway runs at 140km/h (87mp/h) is doable as well, it's around 3800 RPM on 6th gear, you can hear the engine in background and between the songs, but finally your ears are not bleeding from turning it on.

My settings are following. Bass stays on 0, mids at +2, treble at -2. All other enhancements are off. The speed turn up volume is also off. When audio is at 19/20, and if it's set on low, at 140km/h it's way too loud for my taste. I prefer to have it off now.

Definitely worth the hassle. Wonder how it sounds without this simple deadening. I bought 1,5m^2 of material and I'm left with half of it untouched.

If you are bugging yourself, just don't, go for it.

For people wondering about plastic vapour barrier, it's available as a part from Subie website:

Thanks for anyone who helped me here and for this thread. Focals rocks :)

I think the C7 has been updated. I have a sub RCA output and "sub" appears as a independent EQ in the software. I have seen a review video of the C7 which had only four channels.

Just looked at AliExpress again, it says "new version available now" in big red caps but doesn't say when the new version was released.

If that's not the case, then I have got the wrong one! But, it does sound alot better so I am happy.

Sorry to bring up something so old but I messaged PUZU and indeed the current C7 DSP does have dedicated Sub Out with EQ in software.

Yeah I can double confirm that it does - I checked mine before I purchased my sub.

I'm not prepared to go ahead with this unless someone triple confirms
I should probably just add the caveat to my double confirmation that I haven’t actually fitted the sub yet - so can’t confirm that it actually works 🙄🤣

Joking aside, the previous C7 also had physical Sub Outs but they weren't on a dedicated EQ output in the software. I've had 2 Puzu C7 (previous Gen) hence I was unsure and messaged Puzu. For the current gen to have proper sub out, with no change in price, is very good value in the times of continuing price increases.

I fitted my C7 and tinkered about with the settings and saw that mine does have the dedicated EQ output in the software (so looks to be the newer model). Just need to pluck up the courage to actually fit the power kit, leads and sub I bought 😖. Been watching online tutorials and pretty much know what needs to be done. Routing the power from the battery to the boot fazes me a bit (hence I haven’t tried fitting it yet…).

Installed Focals yesterday. As easy install as they get.
Only thing to watch out for is, tweeters do not sit fully in inside original speaker bracket. They are secure enough but I used some hot glue to be sure. Also they are easily damaged as I struggled to get them to sit in as originals. I have managed damage

one…. So my install is one original tweeter and one focal😛. Both are 4 ohm impedance so my system is sill balanced.
As for sound, great improvement over stock speakers. Focal are on the bright spectrum of sound, they do suit car personally 🤓. They are like putting salt on food, everything comes alive, compared to stock speakers. I would wholeheartedly recommend the upgrade.

Now does anyone have spare focal tweeter for sale?

I did exactly the same thing with one of my tweeters! Frustratingly you can't speak directly to Focal for a replacement you have to do it through your retailer and even then they said Focal didn't have any individual tweeters to supply but I got lucky that there was a return that they could break up.

Hi all

Ok I've had a play around with time delays, remeasured and created a new set of filters which allow for the delays. I've also applied EQ to the rear speakers and adjusted the gain on these.

I've targeted the Harman curve, so this gives a pretty balanced tonality overall with a bit of a boost in the low end. If you're a real basshead, you might prefer a bit more in the bottom.

Puzu file, screenshots and the REW measurements, for those interested, all in the zip at the link attached. Enjoy

Hi,

Any chance to have those re-upload?

Thanks

Hey guys, has anyone got a picture of the correct no.7 harness that comes with the PUZU, mines being delivered today and I wanted to check it's correct.

The Focal IS TOY165s are currently available from the below shop for £134.99 (with a 10% off code) and come bundled with some sound deadening material:

Offer expires tomorrow by the looks of it.

EDIT: it appears the discount code is account-specific and not all ebay accounts have access to it, but worth checking if you do. I still think it's a very decent value upgrade at £150.00.

Apologies, I think the discount is account-specific on ebay for the Vehicle Parts & Accessories. I've amended my post to reflect that.
Thanks. Shame as the discount would've pushed me. I know it's not a lot of difference in price, but the truth is I'm not motivated to do the install on my own anyway :)

Installed mine today. Really easy, thanks for the great instructions @Dal3D. Sound quality is so much better, turned all the adjustments off now.

Also fitted the Mod Society auto mirror folding kit at the same time, also really straightforward.

Makes the car nicer with slightly better audio and visual indication of it being locked doesn't it
