GR86 Sapphire Blue in Norfolk

Hey there. I’ve got a few random squeaks in my dash. What was the culprit?

A week in and a 100 of my own miles added, going to and from work plus some errands.
Still such an awesome feeling, still the new car smell.
  • Pedal position, clutch bite and all the commands always are in the right position, never have to adapt to it
  • I'm getting used to the weird behaviour of the indicator, not always self-cancelling
  • Steering feel and assistance is still spot on
  • Ride is so good and never harsh so far
  • Narrow and light is a great winning proposition, great fun on B roads
  • Could do with some exhaust noise
  • Drone from the front tyres on coarse roads is a slight niggle
What's been done:
  • scheduled it in for getting the colour of the wheels lightened (Shadow Chrome ☺️)
  • went to the detailing place to discuss ceramic coating
  • fixed the light metallic squeak from under the dash
  • framed the line drawing I got on handover

Plenty of daydreaming about the TRD parts catalogue too.
Plenty of expectation of what is waiting above 4500 rpm at high load 🥺

Looks even better when the sun is shining, I think ☀️🤗

Hey there. I’ve got a few random squeaks in my dash. What was the culprit?
The two main ones were
1) some harness near the bonnet release, rubbing / tapping on a metal bracket
2) RH a-pillar trim piece, rattling against the windscreen

A shade short of 160 miles on track and it's been brilliant without any issue from the car. It's great to understand how the car behaves in such a great environment for it.

A few comments:
  • 3rd gear tops out at 84 mph
  • 4th gear tops out at 109 mph
  • The synthetic noise will have to go, it's shrill and too loud / buzzy. Not nice at all for the whole day in my opinion.
  • Grip is very high, making the car brake -limited for the long stints, rather than tyre-limited.
  • Handling is very "safe" / stable / understeery, which is nice but not on a MX-5 NC level in the dry
  • Some rear axle tramp or wheel hop can be provoked.
  • The very direct throttle map that makes the cold low-speed jerk is also making it a tad difficult to be smooth when adjusting throttle.
All in all, very much as expected and how it should be, I suppose. Very old school feel.

More professional pictures when available.

Looks like you had a great day and a lot of fun ! 😎😎

What do you mean about the MX5?
Sorry I did miss it yesterday... My MX-5 NC was much easier to rotate on the throttle on track, by modulating it. The GR is more stable and planted, directed by the front end and you don't really feel the car rotate around you.

Number 4 for me. It's got a sense of speed and a nice full frame view of car and track.

After living with the augmented noise (ASC) for 3400 mi and 6 months, and how shrill / buzzy / unnatural / unpleasant it was on track, it's time to disconnect the plug.

And to wrap it in anti-rattle tape, because of professional obsession... 🤷‍♂️

Process was quicky and easy, and removing the glovebox lid helped access a lot.

Now on to the proper research for a nice exhaust!

I watched a review on the BRZ tS over the weekend. I can't believe how awful the car sounded on the interior shots. I disconnected mine after only a few days of owning and when hearing it now, I don't know how anyone puts up with it. It doesn't sound even remotely like an engine! :ROFLMAO:

I'm putting up with it because I haven't got round to taking the panel off to disconnect it. I would have had it disabled in the software if I could.

The side panel is actually quite easy to remove without any tools. the hardest part is getting your hands in to disconnect it.

I asked the dealership who supplied my car to disable it in the software (which they 100% can do) but they said it was piped in through from the induction system and they could remove this pipe and blank it off. I wonder which part of the car they would have randomly removed doing this - maybe the intake resonator. safe to say I wont be using them for any servicing.

Agreed on it sounding weird and artificial and not like an engine. You could see how they shaped it to be an event at high load but it's a bit pants. 😭
I left it on to see what it did in track and it's just not great.

So off it went. The usual slip road accel was much better this morning, if a tad quieter. Pertain sound quality is much cleaner, so it's an improvement

Ah I think that’s just behind the jelly pump on the custard motor. You’ll need to pop along to the service department and ask them for a left-handed screwdriver and some tartan paint for the manager’s test-tackle, plus you’ll need a long weight too. 😉

I had mine disabled by the dealer, in software, before collection. I just can’t get onboard with fake noise, or fake vents.
