Have others seen a huge hike in premium this year?

My renewal was 80% more than last year, and I couldn't find a cheaper quote anywhere else - they were all within £10 or £20 of the renewal.

No claims, nothing has changed. I'm 47 with 17 yrs NCB.

I even phoned to ask if there had been a fraudulent claim against me or something, and they said they could confirm that there was no specific reason for the increase, just reeled off a spiel about inflation, rising costs etc.

Feels like a bit of a stitch up!

I was only discussing this with my Dad who is 86. His renewal has also rocketed . So it's not just us, he drives a Skoda Fabia and only covers 5,000 miles per annum.

Yes, we are being stitched up big time. We have our hands tied as we all need to insure our cars.

A heavily signed petition to the Insurance Ombudsman, Government or the media, may help to highlight this price hike.

Try running an EV, that's a principle reason after plugging something in for 10+ years I no longer drive one. Insurance quotes were up 200+%.

I managed to insure my i30N for 1/10th of the price that I was quoted for my Tesla Model Y.

What are you on about?! Have a google of expected UK motor insurers profits this year and last and report back. I’m afraid it’s a fact that repair costs have gone insane the last 18 months, combined with lengthy periods of credit hire. The general population don’t have a clue I grant you, but I can assure you a letter to the ombudsman will get you nowhere. It’s a very competitive industry so if an insurer can quote lower and want the business, they will gladly clean up.

I understand costs will have risen, but by 80% is a bit of a stretch - that my premium has risen in line with insurer's costs I find hard to credit.

Maybe they're penalising demographics they think can afford it, and luckily I can, but I never thought I'd be paying my highest ever annual premium at this age!

Not 80%, no. I think it’s about 30% in the last two years for claims inflation, then credit hire, then reinsurance, then insurers own costs (wages, office, rent, heating etc), and then pricing in potential future inflation as a claim in 11 months time will likely cost more. It does seem that performance and high-value cars have been hit partially hard, but that’s just because the claims invariably cost more, not because they think people can afford it. They are a higher theft risk, are crashed more often (and at higher speeds), so it all multiplies up. As some insurers move away from the high risk cars, this has an affect on pricing - if we take Range Rovers, most insurers won’t touch them now.
It’s not a great situation and no doubt I will be moaning myself when my renewal comes through, but there are genuine reasons behind the most significant hardening of the motor insurance market for a generation.

My friends son works for admiral, he was saying a couple of months ago that policy’s were going up, blaming it on all the losses from the floods at the time
None of mine are due till may so shall then

80% sounds crazy high. Mine went up 38% on a multi car with LV, which i thought was bad enough and they were not budging.

Mine's just about doubled since I bought it 3 years ago... :cautious:
1st year was like £220 and now it's £444 o_O

NCB is another con. Sites only used to allow 9 years plus ncb, so even though I had in excess of 20 years ncb it was irrelevant.

This year at renewal I’ve got 12 years ncb so lost all those previous years.

You had a result £243 first year 2021, £652 2024.
That's disgusting. I think I would have had to sell it in that case and been bitter for the rest of my life thanks to dopey insurance companies!!

Cost of living crisis is government/industry led.
There was a time when insurance was based on my driving risk/experience.

Mine has gone up from £220 to £370 so around 70% increase and the same on my other car. I know others with BMW M cars going from 600/800 increasing to £4.5k in some cases not able to insure them. It's forcing them to sell up.
Lots of cheap cars coming to the market cos peoples can't afford to run them. Oh and uninsured drivers. The latter being the cheapest way to drive.

Our insewerances just came through. Three including the GR have gone down a bee's thingo while the 4wd stayed the same, no doubt the result of me customising the rear door on a tree I didn't see. The camper trailer though. Wow. That is an ouch. However none are the level you guys are paying. GR is under AUD600 which is about €100 and a handful of gravel.

Well I suppose it's (sort of) good to know that everyone is in a similar boat.

If it makes anyone else feel a little better about their own hikes, I live in a high risk postcode area and this is what I'm having to swallow...

🤷‍♂️

Humpty, thank you for confirming my general thoughts. Welcome to rip off United Kingdom. I won't include Northern Ireland as I reckon their Insurance companies won't rip them off.
I'm sure I will be corrected once again but it would be interesting to compare insurance quotes
