Be sure to ask for an accurate speciation list to make sure you're aware of everything else that is/isn't fitted to the car then.

Don’t give them ideas, next prerequisite for a GR purchase will be a minimum of 3 Corolla, RAV4 or Yaris previously owned and bought new with all optional extras ticked.

Thank you for your reply and again your patience.


We have now recieved an update regarding the concerns raised and have been advised that the GR86 is fitted with immobiliser only and is not included with an alarm.


Toyota apologises for any disappointment caused.

No mention of any further discussions or potential resolution, just an apology that I'm disappointed.
 
Hi , I collected my car yesterday and loving it.

I got what I assume is a standard email from Toyota Online the day before collection so I responded:

''I want to place on record with you that I have previously mentioned the lack of an alarm both to xxx at the dealership (xxx was surprised to find on investigation that indeed there is no alarm on their stock car) and also I've also raised this when I have called into yourselves even though on the specifications it clearly has (or at least had) a tick in 'alarm and immobiliser'. I believe this issue is already or at least I hope it is being actively investigated within Toyota GB PLC so please keep me updated of developments in terms of a resolution. I understand that when in the past it was also misrepresented that there were parking sensors on the GR86 a while back that Toyota agreed to retrofit these at no cost to the customer at that time so I would sincerely hope that this is the same remedy you will be applying with regard to the lack of the alarm. I also think Toyota also stated an auto dimming rear view mirror was part of the specification which again was inaccurate.''

I got the following response:

'' You are correct - the alarm situation is already being looked into internally, and we will be in touch again soon to advise if a resolution will be available. We appreciate the disappointment this has caused and you are not the first customer to raise this inaccuracy. As soon as we have any further information/updates, we will let you know.''

The fact that they admit to 'this inaccuracy' to my mind means it needs resolving.
 
Seems like it is causing a problem that they are at least taking seriously thankfully. The parking sensors were a no brainer since it was a relatively cheap and easy fix, retrofitting an alarm maybe not so simple/cheap but I don't think they have much choice.
 
Not sure how I feel about a dealer retro-fitting an alarm.
The motion sensors on the GT86 always looked like an after thought, so I guess this will carry forward to the GR 😟

Yeah same here. I am really in two minds whether or not I would take a retrofitted alarm if offered.
 
If anything it could be a Software alarm, whereby the system monitors any change in Potential Difference across the perimeter sensors (doors, bonnet, boot etc) and would sound the horn if any spikes were detected. At most this is a bit of coding and an ECU re-flash. I’ve written similar integration routines for military systems with neither the support or the money Toyota can offer. Their boffins could have this done in a few hours… 🤓

It's likely that if they did go down this route, it wouldn't be Toyota it would be Subaru Japan making the change to the ECU which will take months.

The video demo of the cars that have them appear to be pretty basic and operate like you say, they just sound the horn if a door is opened. It would need a bonnet open sensor (which I don't think it has) and as you say some code to recognise it, in fact it must be there already as other countries have this cheap ass system already installed.

There is probably already a sensor in the bonnet lock, as I bet if you leave it open the car warns you it's open. Likewise the boot lid.
The US cars have this built-in alarm, so as @Cholmondeley-Biscuitt says, it just needs enabling or an update to enable it.
 
If they gave a cash incentive or free servicing I would take this instead.

An alarm is pretty pointless in this day and age.
