GR86 Vehicle Security

Time to give up on the alarm. Had this back from Toyota:

Dear Stephen

Thank you for your email

UK specification GR86 vehicles do not have an alarm, however they do have an immobiliser.

I hope this helps

Kind regards

So I've now asked how that squares with their quoted UK spec from the VIN and how they think I should break it to my insurers

I don't expect much sense in return.

I feel a class action coming on...
Totally unacceptable. (I still haven't had a reply BTW)

Basically if there is enough of us complaining they will have to do something about it (similar to the parking sensors). Lets see how they respond first before we open a can of legal whoop ass on them. Let them dig themselves a hole.

Totally agree

Of course there then presents itself yet another can of worms. If Toyota decide to make good, be it under duress or willingly the retrofit is not without its concerns. You’re left potentially at the mercy of hamfisted fuckwittery of the installer. Funnily enough it was a large factor in my decision not to go ahead with letting them fit the parking sensors FOC which were also quoted on the spec.

I think I may be swayed depending on my next insurance renewal quote.

My other question to TGB was 'what else is missing?'

Toyota used to excel in customer service (or so I thought) it would be good to know it isn't all a con. There's already too much cynicism in the world.

Exactly my thoughts too, and a significant factor in avoiding having the parking sensors done (as well as preferring the cleaner look).

What a bloody palaver!

Does make you wonder.........

I've tested the ABS that works
Traction control sort of works

Are the airbags in?
Has anyone pressed the SOS button, mines still showing a recall...... 😅

I vaguely remember alarms (and sensors) being accessories fitted after arrival in the UK and not in the factory. So you’d be at mercy of one of them either way.

I don’t know where I read that though, maybe someone else here has a better memory than me? 😅

I always viewed Toyota as one of the better companies (you don't become the biggest by being rubbish) and this is my first experience of Toyota and it's not going as I expected. Would I buy another from them, depends on how they handle this cock up. As someone else mentioned it does make you wonder what else is missing that we haven't discovered yet (and let's face it we would all be oblivious to it if it hadn't been picked up elsewhere)

5 years ago I leased a SEAT. When I ordered it was due to come with heated seats. Between order and delivery the spec changed and it arrived without them. I kicked up a fuss because it was something I wanted on the car. The dealer agreed and paid for them to be retro fitted. I was surprised they did on a lease car.

Perhaps someone could add a poll at the start of this thread to show who has already raised a complaint and who has yet to (and perhaps who's not really bothered) so that we can get a sense of some numbers?

We need a coordinated attack!

Looking back at the free 3-day insurance email, it lists how to complete the form and there in black and white says to choose the alarm and immobiliser option!

The response that Laverda received was a disgrace, in a properly brushed under the carpet fashion which is simply not a good enough reply.

I think it curious (and I may have mentioned this to TGB) that the core of kaizen is not just continual improvement (our combined experiences on that could be another whole thread), but also about uniformity outcome. The voiced experiences here go from the excellent to the plain couldn't care less (I'm afraid mine falls well within the latter). It is disappointing that thiscould happen in the franchise model operated by Toyota but unforgivable to get it direct from TGB.

I would be surprised if this forum isn't monitored to some extent by TGB, so I would ask them to comment here.

The online team experience was at best patchy depending who you spoke to. My dealership made me feel less than special (didn't want any fuss and the car left untouched, but a only enough fuel to get to the petrol station would have been nice, especially as it was only e few hundred metres away.

The alarm nonsense fits their current MO, but falls well belo

Whoops, hit post...

Falls well below that I would expect from Toyota.

The car is excellent, that doesn't mean it compensates for shite service before, during and after the process

PS this isn’t a late night drunken rant, I'm in the states visiting our son.

I too avoided retrofit of parking sensors. Same reason. Also personally I don't like the look of non factory ones either (non flush).

I wouldn't want any dealer pulling mine apart to fit an alarm. I have had a Sporpion tracker and immobiliser fitted by Scorpion. The guy who did this was excellent. Although if I'd known what was actually involved I might not have been brave enough. I'm glad it's done.

Most likely an alarm will make zero difference to insurance cost these days. If it goes off it's too late anyway and thiefs will take what they want and be gone. The immobiliser is the primary defence and cost driver.

My tracker made zero difference to insurance cost. I got if for added piece of mind, the ability to Geofence location if it goes to a dealer or is parked in a car park. And for the additional remote and automatic immobilisation. Another layer of defence.

In London people ignore car alarms. No one wants to get involved. You only have to look on IG or YT to see videos of theives breaking into cars in broad daylight and no one does anything. Sad times.

I certainly won’t be bothering to add an alarm or upgrade the current Cat2 to a Cat1. Alarms can be a PITA, especially when they go off after being passed by a loud motorcycle or on a hot Summer night. I think I’ll just reinstall the Ghost and then put a Disk Lock on for visibility. As noted above by @sbc_uk a tracker makes no difference to my insurance quotes either (go figure) so I’ll not install one this time - There’s £500+ saved that I can now put towards a Cobra Exhaust 😁

If I were to raise my concerns about the lack of alarm on my car after having been previously told it had one, which email address am I directing that message to please?

I chased the issue again to see if they had any updates after the previous response.
I am currently still waiting official confirmation regarding these concerns raised.

Please rest assured your order will remain open and you will be contacted once I have an update.

Thank you so much for your continued patience.

Once again, Toyota aren't consistent with their communication.
