GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Chinese whispers at this point.

Every breathless article or YouTube video endlessly regurgitating the same 6 or 7 points made (speculated?) in the original Japanese source, the website write-ups about it, the discussions on the website articles on forums like this. Each pontificating like they have a hotline to Mr Toyoda...

And as has been proved in the delivery debacles for the Yaris and 86, the dealers are often even more poorly informed than us, so I would probably judge them at the bottom of the information foodchain at this point.

Let's wait and see what actually transpires, eh?

He’s heard the rumour from the same place as everyone else. Saw a friend a week or so ago who is dealer principal at A GR Toyota Garage and he knew nothing, so has been nothing official as yet.

No argument there. Just thought I'd ask and share the reply. The garage that supplied my car is also a GR Centre.

The dealers know even less than we do, and they are Toyota franchises.
I would be interested, same goes for the GT Corolla.

Goodwood Magazine also jumping on the rumourmill

And rumour has it the planned updates will comprise more than just the Yaris' face. According to Japanese outlet 'Best Car', power will increase to 304PS (224kW), the same as the GR Corolla, which uses a re-tuned version of the same inline three-cylinder fitted to the current GR Yaris.

The addition of an eight-speed automatic gearbox is also rumoured, although the current six-speed manual will still be available. Paddle shifters will come as standard, and the automatic lower ratios and tall cruising gear should make it faster on B roads and quieter on monotonous motorway treks.

Every article only quotes the same single source, so none of them are 'new' - just repeating the best car rumour.

Yep, "Best Car" magazine in Japan.

Would be good to understand how accurate their reporting has been in the past.

I understand that this might not be a popular viewpoint, but I genuinely believe that my GRY is already plenty fast, and I wouldn't want it to be any faster. It's reached the speed that I find comfortable for my car. In contrast, my M2C was too fast for my liking, which was one of the reasons I sold it. It became challenging to enjoy without hitting triple-digit speeds. There's a balance between being too slow and overly fast, and I believe the current GRY strikes that sweet spot in my opinion. I'm not entirely sure why there's always such enthusiasm for more horsepower.

Totally with you on this! I think the GRY has plenty of power for road fun. Sure, on a big circuit you’d always want more power, but I think you’re right, the GRY strikes a great balance. If anything it’s a bit too capable / grippy, especially compared to my 25 year old Elise S1.

If they did offer an official Toyota upgrade though……! 🤣

Someone I know at management level inside the Toyota/Lexus/GR brand here has been part of a recent long term future brand brief that included coming products in the medium and long term and they told me as part of that brief that there is a true MK2 GR Yaris planned in the long term and this October press release (production starts in 2024) news of the MK1.5 GR Yaris (auto with engine updates and additional oil and transmission cooler) is coming.

They wouldn't tell me any more because they'd lose their job if it got out they told me but they're reliable. - (for obvious reasons I've kept specifics out of the above so they can't be identified but they're "in the loop" at a level above dealerships).

Easily solved, bet the new one doesn't have this upgrade ;)

Not 100% sure it will come to Europe though, GPF and ever tighter regs and small numbers and such.
Doesn't matter for me, I have already decided to not buy a new ICE car again.

that's dangerous. If someone from Kenya looses her better half and decides to sell you his 500km GT3RS or S/T with just few thousand dollars, I bet you would at least have a thought for a second.

I agree with you guys above, pleeeenty of power. It's a rocket once it's warmed up and you have access to the full boost!
I'd just improve on other things if I were to mod it... like spacers, springs, torque mount, exhaust & eventuri etc...

That would be a second hand car at that time so that solves that. However dear Michael, from good information source I have special information for you my friend, and that is that you should be careful with Kenyans selling cars, Nigerians are much more trustworthy, especially if they know what car you want beforehand. However, the same source tells me now that Michael might not be your real name, so now I don't know who to trust anymore

The cynic in me has been wondering whether the production of the current car was slowed right down

This mirrors my experience to be honest. Yeah, I'm sure it might be a little more exciting on a motorway slip road to have a little more power, but for me the power levels feel just right in a car of this size and agility.

Being a rally and homologation special fan since being a young kid, and growing up with the Group A and WRC beauties of the 90s, even if the Mk2 GRY is a technically better car, it's not going to have quite the same romance as the one that was designed from the ground up for the Rally1 rules.

The fact that I couldn't afford one has nothing to do with it... :D
