GR86 GR86 paint seems very thin

My silver car had several noticeable chips which showed as black across the bumper and even a minor ding on the bonnet from a stone. I had PPF fitted to the side skirts as shoes catch that getting in and out and its worked well, I just had the whole front end done in PPF and rear bumper on the basis that if in 1800 miles chips are so obvious and starting to make a mess then I might as well try and protect it. Unfortunately PPF is best when paint is new but there are some very good touch up pens (I used Paint Nuts) which if done by a pro can mask 90% of the chip mark and then have PPF added.
Im pleased with the PPF result (XPEL Ultimate) its glossy and invisible unless you look for it, never felt the need to do a rear bumper but figures one day someone or something is going to breath on it and it'll scuff or mark!
I think they'd have been better painting it with chocolate personally.
Oh we must be copying each other I have a bonnet ding as well along with a nice scratch on the bootlid (the airflow must have been too strong for the paint ;)). Will have to try a touch up pen, thanks for the tip

I wonder if the paint just peels off over 100 mph! :ROFLMAO:

It's crazy how soft the paint on these are. I'm super careful, snow foam before pressure washing, new wash mitt when washing with 2BM. Dry off with pet dryer and even with ceramic coat it still swirls a bit. The body bits aren't as bad but the ducktail is hard work. Going to have to get it corrected and resealed with something else. Used the Pyramid 5yr stuff and while it beads well it's not as tough as I was expecting. Perhaps I was expecting too much. XPEL for the most part has been OK where I've used it. But one patch we did on boot lid got a slap of bird crap which I got off with Quick Detailer but not quick enough as it left a mark in the film that's not healed, even in this heat so needs to go back for that. It will get to the point where I'll stop worrying about it and get on with it. Entropy gets us all in the end anyway. Life is too short.

You're very right. My ducktail it being fitted today, I dont know what painting method they use for hardening it but based on the rest of the car I dont think it matters!
I've XPEL over most of mine, a few months too late to save it from several stone chips sadly, but yes, you just accept the inevitable eventually. My first new car, my previous a 3 year old 320d I had for 11 years started off BMW approved immaculate and then the preciousness eroded over the years, mainly due to other peoples lack of care in car parks but at least the paint was like granite in comparison.

I've had ceramic coating applied, but I have to say, seeing what simple bird poo has done to Swizzle's paint, I'm rather paranoid now :(
I was going to find a spray bottle and knock up a quick detailer just using a very weak mix of shampoo and keep it in the boot with a soft cloth. Hoping that will do the trick rather than paying for a dedicated QD or bird poo wipes.

I'm glad the bit that got it at least had film to catch it. Worst case the film is changed. I'll look at getting the roof done too as being a flat surface will always take fallout before the sides.

I keep a full arsenal in the boot! Diluted Optimum No Rinse, AF Citrus Power, spray waxes, drying towels and polishing clothes.

Fortunately I'm known at work for obessing a bit about this kind of thing so I had all this gone in about 5 minutes of it landing thanks to a prompt heads up from a colleague! Was all over the roof, bootlid and the building behind me somehow as well!!

What do you reckon is best method for dealing with bird crap when you’re away from home? I read somewhere that if you put a paper tissue over it and soak it, it’ll soften it, then a bit of a wipe and a quick detailer spritz?? Or is that ballex?
(Never worried about this sort of carry-on before 😂😭)

That has worked for me. It can take several goes. Kitchen roll paper is probably best as it holds water better.

Yeah, agree with this, just don't forget you've got it soaking.

My OH loves to Ieave them on there until I find it the next day dried out and welded to the car 🤦‍♂️

Paint is definitely very thin. I've somehow picked up 3 little clear coat (I think/hope/pray) scratches on the door - looks like someone has leaned against it and a zip/button has caught the paint 💀 Not even 500 miles down yet!
