I love my car. Apparently so do all the motorist journalists. When I see any social media post where Toyota mentions the GR86 I see so many replies along the lines of ‘shame no one can buy one’.

I’ve noticed a few cars on Autotrader that seem reasonably priced that have been for sale for a while. Why is no one buying them?

Cost of living crisis? Waiting for the potential second batch?

Genuinely interested in owners thoughts.

I thought they would get snapped up. I spoke to my supplying dealer about it and he seems to think they are not as desirable as the GR Yaris. Said he would only pay £26k for a used GR86. Yet the approved vehicles on the Toyota website are £38k+ 🤷‍♂️

From what I have seen they seem to sell quite quickly at around the £35k mark. I wonder if people are holding off and hoping for more new cars to come to the uk. I don’t think we will really understand the market until spring next year. Mine is a keeper so just watching out of curiosity.

In my opinion, it's petrolhead cool to like the driving dynamics of the 86, but the reality is that it's easier to get a buzz from a powerful turbo car than it is to practice enjoying a great chassis in a safe space like a track.

Also can get a 4wd turbo saloon/hatchback with four doors and rear seats. It was the same with the GT86, people talked a lot of talk but then went and bought something else. If someone buys an 86, you know they really like driving 😁

I advertised mine for £34,500 and it sold the same day.

I had several calls first day, including one from a dealer who said he'd buy it if the sale fell through.

So the dealer saying they'll pay you 26k are in dreamland.

Was it a dealer? Or private?

I think thats around the right price. A bit of profit but not taking the P.

I totally agree. So many people I have spoken to that don’t even know what the GR86 is yet say they are into cars.

I’ve found one dealer that seemed genuinely excited about it. But said his boss would have no idea so couldn’t give a decent offer. FYI I was tempted by something else and asked for £35k for mine.

I missed out on original allocation, so had to buy private to get mine. I was happy to pay a premium, as intend it as a keeper, but did have a 10% figure in my head that I was prepared to pay extra, and no more. ended up paying £34k, but the seller said he had a few other calls offering that as well, but as I was first to contact him let me have it. So, with a Cobra exhaust now fitted, have ended up paying out £35k overall, which I am very happy with👍

Cost of living and people want as much for their money as they can get. We get it but not everyone does and I'll never justify to anyone why I got it. People are lazy so like effortless performance. Even though compared to the GT86, this is far easier to pass stuff. I overtook loads going to Scotland and back last week and it never felt down on power, even with the vastness of some of the roads.

I wouldn't worry about it. The world financially will get worse before it gets better and in years to come, this will still be seen as one of the greats and we were the lucky few to get them from new. Dealers "struggling" to price them is a sob story to try and get more for it when they sell it. For those of us on PCP, there's no way the final value will be that low. My intention is still to buy it outright and keep forever, buy a 2nd car, probably an old BMW Estate for rough work

The Carwow / LivingLifeFast generation want dual clutch gearboxes and pop bang maps on their cars, with a "stage 2" for straight line drag racing on the local bypass.

GR86 is a bit more niche.

Interest rates on used car finance from dealers got a whole lot more expensive in the last 12-months. I wouldn't buy a used car from a dealer now if I needed finance, regardless of what it is. I might have been tempted to change my daily if it wasn't the case, but I'll just keep it now, as the cost delta to even get an equivalent but newer car, is ridiculous. I think a lot of people are of a similar mindset at the moment, and are sticking with what they've got, even if they do want something new.

I just checked after typing this out due to curiosity, it would be 127% more expensive to get an equivalent deal from a main dealer, to what I got 3-years ago.

The UK market isn't into sports car, it is hot hatches and cross overs. Forget GR86s for a second, think about sports cars, how many do you see in relation to all the other cars on the road?

Your dealer is the kind of guy that would happily buy your car for £26k then immediately put it up for £40k the next day, then brag to his mates about it.

Bank loans are too expensive at the moment and people are waiting for interest rates to come down. Utility bills are going to be reduced by a third from July and I can already see petrol and diesel prices falling as the competition watchdog starts to investigate price gouging.

If this carries on inflation falls, interest rates fall, we all go on a mad spending spree and inflation goes through the roof. I hope not but it is what happened in the 70's.

With talk of a second batch from Toyota, why would you pay a flipper £35-40K for a nearly new second owner car, when there is a chance to get a brand new one for £30-33K. Doubt prices will increase until after the extra cars are announced

When I collected on Saturday I asked the sales guy about the second batch and he said they hadn't heard anything about more cars possibly coming. And he didn't think there would be another batch 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have an MX5 but wanted something with some room in the back. Missed the boat when the GR86 order book opened so got a low mileage GT last November then recently spotted a few GR's on Autotrader. Sold the GT to WBAC 600 quid less than I paid for it and got a 1900 mile GR. There were 6 for sale at the time, 2 were in Scotland, made a couple of enquiries to others, got no response from one so bought the other one. Paid 35 which I thought was reasonable. Its one of those things that if you want one you want one and if you can't have one you want one more.
There was talk of a 2nd wave but no dates and if they announce one say in July would that mean you wait a year to get one? And if they do a 2nd wave I doubt it will be less than 30k. All unknowns.
Still getting to know the car but so far I love it.
Forgot to add I even got the t shirt

Sorry you missed the boat and had to pay over, but if these had been £35k list I’d have still ordered one. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it.

at least financing is much more expensive at the time so might be just that folks have less cash to invest. Different game than 1 year ago alltogether.

Yep, whilst it wouldn't have been the bargain it was, I still would have bought for 35k, as there was nothing else that I wanted at the time. Before the price was announced, I was hoping for 30k, but thought it would be closer to 32-33k, so was really pleased when it was confirmed.

Looks like they are being advertised at £32,495 now? Also seems to be quite a few more used ones advertised on Toyota’s website now too.
