So I've been doing some man maths in my head, trying to justify future modifications to my GR86, as you would on a Sunday morning, and decided to put my incurred and anticipated costs in a spreadsheet to see how much it would actually cost me to own the car over the next 10 years.

Assumptions made:
  1. I keep the car for 10 years and sell at the end
  2. My mileage averages at 4000/year
  3. Fuel consumption averages at 30 mpg
  4. Fuel costs remains at around £1.60/l for tesco momentum
  5. The service plan includes all required servicing items
  6. There are no out of warranty repairs
  7. VED doesn't increase significantly in the climate change battle
  8. I only go through two sets of tyres during the 10 year/40k miles ownership
  9. The car loses half of its value during my ownership and I don't recoup costs of any extras
Has anyone done something similar in their heads/on papyrus/etched on the driver's door already?

3 big variables in there which could have an impact, VED (my fear is that they will try and use this sledgehammer to push petrol/diesel cars off the road quicker than their useful life which is abhorrent IMV) and fuel duty escalators (see my previous point about demonizing fossil powered cars) and the final one being resale value, if you plan to keep it forever then it's a non issue, but if you believe the Autocar articles from a few weeks back they they will be worth £70k so all good :) (y)

Agreed @v8s ; VED, fuel and resale all subject to unpredictability.

For some reason I find the £0.10 pcm key cover cost amusing...better hope you don't need to replace it! ;)

I always do similar when I sell a car I've owned for a while.

I don't count fuel/VED, but include servicing/repairs/depreciation.

I then work it out as a weekly cost of ownership.

And surprisingly, some cars cost as little as £20 a week, some have cost nothing when they sell for more than I'd paid.

People harp on about VW Transporters, and Porsche being way overpriced, well the one's I've owned have been practically free when I've worked out the weekly ownership costs.

Even loosing 12k on an Audi wasn't so bad at £230 per week, or £33 per day.

Anyhow, enough of my boring waffle, the GR86

I wouldn't be at all surprised if a nice condition GR86 will be worth more than list in 10 years time.

After 5 years time you won't be able to buy a similar new car?

So a GR86, GR Yaris, with 5 years manufactures warranty still in place, will be highly desirable things, and I think will climb in value from then onwards.

We are very lucky to own our GR86's

I used to be very analytical with car ownership - keeping a fuel / mpg record for every fill up etc but as I've got older I've let that go.

I'm not bothering to keep a record for fuel use with the GR86 as I'm not going to worry about it and just drive the damn thing. I've a fuel record for my RS and that's averaged 29.23mpg since new, but the last entry was last July as I just CBA anymore!

I’m always an “it is what it is” type.

Since you can’t do anything about fuel cost, windscreen damage, the odd scuffed wheel, parked hit and runs, insurance excesses, nails in tires or any wear and tear items (with real cost precision) - so why bother about it.

On the spreadsheet, stating 20k miles on tires won’t happen. Rears every 10k, fronts every 15k depending on your braking style..
