If it’s anything like the GT86, after the front bumper, the worst chips are on the leading edge of the roof above the windscreen. I think stones skim up the windscreen then clip the edge. Chips down to bare metal. If I were PPF’ing I’d even be tempted to see if they can add extract protection there.

On my GT with 60k, even with mud-flaps, I have at least one chip on almost all panels except the boot lid and rear bumper.

I’m on the fence about whether I’d spend £3k on PPF. Resprays are almost always a bad idea, however 10% the price of the car and you could still get chips from larger rocks is a tough call. I didn’t bother for my current car.

The paintwork is so weak, at least on the previous generation of GT’s, I’d be a little nervous when it came to removal day as well.

That was exactly my thinking. I don't feel comfortable in paying £3-4k that's worth 10% of the car for complete PPF protection that is neither infallible nor covered by most insurers. Any minor incident would involve me being out of pocket on it.

And spending half of that (£1.5-2k) on only front protection would annoy me when chips and scratches start gathering on other parts of the car. I've already noticed a tiny scratch on one door that was likely caused by a flying stone or gravel.

I'll just do my best to correct the paint every year, including filling in stone chips, and sealing it with good ceramic coating. That's the other annoying part of having only ceramic coating applied by a professional, if it gets scratched or damaged, you need to remove and reapply it on the whole panel, so it can get expensive over time and most coating warranties don't cover that type of damage.

Worst case scenario it will be a full respray or a wrap in the future.

I see the nice people over at www.deluxecarcare.co.uk have a couple at the moment !

I’m lucky in that the same of my old car gave me a decent profit so I’m going for fill PPF. I would also be a little disgruntled only doing the front end as the rest of the car would need more upkeep. As the money was tied up as equity in my old car, it was never in the bank so that’s were my man maths comes in and I’m happy to spend it.

I’m booked in on the 9th of Jan so I’ll give you an update when I get it.

Anyone who says you can see PPF after installed is crazy. These are after install pics right? 😛
These have the decorative PPF pack.

To be fair, a normal person wouldn't notice PPF but we car people... do. The installs are really good but on certain edges, it's impossible to get an invisible install (and I was concerned by this initially as it will most likely annoy me) but the main purpose is protection so it does its job.

Been quoted £1200 for front end XPEL then use the off cuts to replace the boot sill one. Also want them to do the top of the boot lid as I'll be getting a Seasucker for the bike and XPEL self healing appeals. I wasn't going to but for £120 a year and it's a keeper the man maths is almost working. Then Ceramic coat for £550 including all the wheels and not just the surfaces. Booked in for WC 16th Jan
Any reason why you'd be replacing the OEM boot film?

I asked some local companies for quotes and so far got one, for XPEL: £1300 for front, £350 for side skirts and £80 to do door sills (to protect from shoes).
£600 for ceramic coating the rest of the car, although I don't know what brand they use. Any brands worth looking out for? As I'm not really experienced with that.

Because it's quite thick and noticeable. That's all

I've decided to PPF mine, just not sure whether I'll do front + sills, or the whole car. STEK PPF, I went and had a look at it earlier today, and the 'self-healing' way it removes scratches is voodoo.

He replied to his own video

I was told to avoid Xpel, the reason its so popular is they have a great advertising campaign, the products themselves are questionable.

I've opted in for full front PPF (including wings and mirrors) + side sills after all.

Suntek Revive with 10 year warranty - £1750 with the prep work. Seems to stack favourably against XPEL and comes ceramic coated. Stek was also a strong consideration but more expensive at £2k with another detailer.

For anyone still on the fence, the front bumper gets peppered by stones and other road debris. I can already see tiny white marks that I'll try to correct this weekend but it sure will look worse over time.

I'll be doing my own paint correction and ceramic coating to the rest of the car.

"Was told" by someone that didn't pass the criteria to become Xpel approved maybe? 🤣

Exactly. This is where it's sus for me too. Everyone is trying to get your business. There are loads of films out there and they all want a piece of the action.

The guy who is doing mine I've known since I was in college so over 15 years ago and he's been detailing since then so I trust him over some random messaging me on Twitter to do it (got a LOT of that when I first posted pics). The price I've been quoted for front and sills is reasonable, plus correction and application of my ceramic. Getting it done week after next. I'm more trusting him over the product but I've seen him do so many now it must be fine. It self heals, has a warranty. Did I want to be spending so much? Not really but it's only once and I'm keeping the car. I'll feel a lot less anxious once it's done.

All I know is I've had my Xpel on my focus for 6+ years and it still looks like new.

The OH BMW has the new hydrophobic Xpel on it and that's excellent 👍

Does XPEL yellow over time?
Mine hasn't yellowed in nearly 7 years

I think the yellowing thing was only really applicable in older generation PPF that haven't been used for many years. The newer generation of films from all major manufacturers don't yellow like the old stuff and why you get much longer guarantees.
