GR86 First oil change (poll)

With the forum members consisting of a lot of ex-GT86/BRZ owners and experienced driving enthusiasts, it would be interesting to see what the general consensus is on the first engine oil change that everyone is planning on doing and your thoughts on why you choose to do it early or late.

I have split the options between DIY, independent garage and Toyota servicing for clarity. If you choose Other, please specify what you're planning on doing in the comments section.

Please vote in the poll but feel free to change your mind and update the option accordingly later.

For reference:

• The official break-in period for the engine is 1000 miles.
• The US service schedule mandates 6,000 miles or 6 month intervals.
• The Toyota UK service schedule specifies 10,000 miles or 1 year oil changes (whichever comes sooner).

I'm going to be doing very few miles a year (two or three thousand) so I think I'll stick to the 12 months, albeit with far fewer miles.

I've voted 'other' for this reason but happy to move my vote to the 10k/1yr option if you prefer @beorg .

I think I'll stick to the main dealer for now; I am happy with my supplying dealer as I've built up a relationship with a couple of the staff there (and they looked after my previous GT86 well).

I should have made it clearer, the poll options are the maximum timeframe/mileage you would be doing the first service at. So if you're doing it within the first year with the main dealer, it would be option 9 there.

I'm undecided on the first 1000 mile change, not entirely sure if its necessary but I will be going independent for servicing every 12 months (won't cover 10k pa in it). I will however, be switching straight to 5W-30.

Changing oil + filter at 1000 miles myself. Bought Castrol EDGE 0W-20 C5 5L for it (= Toyota spec according to the manual).
Next maintenance for 10 years will be at Toyota following their schedule (10y warranty extended each year).

Bought an oil filter at a Subaru dealership, they have them on stock. Part number is 15208AA170 (15208AA130 filts as well but is not the OEM size, slightly taller).
Probably half price than buying online or from Toyota.

How are you going to inspect the oil pan? Will you be dropping it or borescoping without checking the tube?

And I believe the below engine oil meets the specification of the one used by Toyota, although there's also a 0W20 C5 oil designated for Supras - any ideas on the difference?

if i had one i would be dropping the oil around 1000mile....seen inside plenty of engines with "full service history/oil changes" and seen plenty of scoring on cams and dirt embedded in shell bearings

The engine need oil that complies with API SP RC or ILSAC GF-6A. 0W-20, 5W-20 or 5W-30.

I am showing my age here, but how things have changed with todays Engine oils.
When I bought my new Griff 500 back in 98 it was recommended to use Mobil 1. It went through a litre every 600 miles it was so thin!
After having a chat with a TVR mechanic he told me at the next oil change to use Duckhams 20/50, hardly used any oil after that.
After all it was an old Buick 3.5 Rover Engine probably from the 60s bored out to 5.0.
I also remember asking the Salesman about running in, he advised me just to get it warm & thrash the pants out of it. If it broke just bring it back!

Mine arrived today, managed to get a 10% off discount making it £13.50 for the filter + washer. As it's an import item, it's slightly more expensive than what you'd pay for it in the US/Japan, but still reasonably priced compared to other filters. I'd be surprised if Toyota doesn't fit a slightly different one come first oil change with them in a year.

I went with Millers oil (EE Performance Fully Synthetic Engine Oil With Nano Tec - 0w20 - API SP - ILSAC GF-6A - 5 Litre) from Fensport as I was ordering the aero stabilising cover from them anyway and with a 5% discount from the store and free delivery, it was a bargain at £46 and was often the recommended oil for the GT86.

I've decided to buy the parts myself and get my trusted independent to do the oil change so I get a proof of work for any warranty issues and future resale value. I will be able to inspect for any RTV residue as well at the same time (and will post pictures of course).
