GR86 EVO car of the year

So pleased the Gr86 made it in the mix! Particularly as Evo seem to love it! What else is in there?

Some teaser video clips of this year’s ECOTY on their Instagram stories - GR86 is in the mix alright, but looks like some pretty stiff competition…
Does the underdog ever win this?? 😂
Some ECOTY results have been surprising.

Last year the M5 CS was top, beating Huracan STO, 911 GT3 Touring, M3 Comp, Civic type R Limited and others.

And in 2020, the M2 CS won against 765LT, Huracan Evo, and GRY - which was fourth.

So, anything can happen!

The Clio Trophy won back in 2005 so it wouldn't be unusual!

Will look forward to my copy, hopefully they'll be a full video too.

Looks vaguely familiar...

For those people interested, the next issue of evo should be in the shops on 7 December.

I'm glad it took part but not hopeful for a win in that company!

I reckon we can rule out the two ton Germans placed (quite rightly) at the back of that photo.

Maserati seems to be getting mixed reviews.

R8 - didn't even realise they were still being made.

My (probably completely inaccurate) prediction: Third place for the GR behind the Porsche then Ferrari, and honorary 'moral victory' status.

I reckon the GR86 wins that test. Poor weather conditions will not bode well for the CSL (which needs perfect weather), the GT4 RS is the type of car that you'll instantly love (but this is EVO and it isn't a manual), the SL isn't a natural EVO car, the 296 will be a firm challenge, the Maserati is a great car but a bit more of a tourer than perhaps you'd expect, so difficult to quantify, the R8 is just too old and the McLaren is an unknown quantity. As the only manual in that group, it will naturally be the most involving car there, using most of its capability more of the time - I predict a win.

ETA - I predict 1st GR86, 2nd GT4RS, 3rd Ferrari 296 GTB, 4th McLaren, 5th Maserati, 6th Audi, 7th CSL, 8th SL

In perfect conditions and the right spec, I predict that the CSL would be 4th or 5th in that group.

That would be wonderful.

Listers Lincoln would then amend their listing to £79,995, probably.

I think as a driver's car, there's very little that can get close to the GR86. It literally ticks every box, RWD, naturally aspirated, good pedal weightings and spacing, manual (and a good one at that), good steering feel, one chassis setting that does everything well - very light too in this day and age. The only area it potentially falls down is engine noise. The GT4RS would destroy it as a track car, but on the road? I'm not so sure.

As long as it's assessed purely as a driver's car, it'll do. very well indeed! The other cars there will have a sense of occasion that the GR86 won't be able to match but other than that what's not to like?

Firstly, where’s the Emira? Why have an R8 that’s literally at the end of its production instead?
I’m guessing the GT4RS or 296 will win being Evo. Having said that, BMW specials have won the last 2 years!

To me the Porsche is too much of a track car, the Ferrari technically brilliant, but a massive price, and has stupid haptic controls that alone would stop me buying one (as if I could!). I suspect mclaren and mc20 would be better road cars, and the Artura could potentially spring a surprise win.
I love Maseratis though, so would have that, just not in that colour.

The GR86. Who knows, either it will win, due to punching above, highlighting the fact modern supercars are just too fast now as to be virtually unusable, other than for a couple of seconds of full throttle, or will be 5th or 6th due to being not a 100-350k supercar, costing less than the options fitted to most of the others.
