Yet to receive an email offering a test drive from them and I emailed last week and even popped up to look around before it was ready.
Maybe I'm just an old luddite that doesn't understand soshul meeja but what is the point of that?

"hello is that Parklands Toyota, I saw your insta and want a test drive"
"OK no problem"
Takes test drive.
"that was great where do I sign?"
"you can't they are all sold"
"dafuq? - why did you let me drive 30 minutes to get here, drive it and then tell me I couldn't buy one?!"
"dunno mate, pics look good on insta though yeah?"

I have to admit, I really am wondering what is the point of the demonstrator cars? If they're all sold out, then their only real purpose is to allow existing customers a chance to drive before them commiting to their own cars.

But that doesn't make much sense given that the customer cars are due to be delivered only a couple of weeks later. And given the constant delays and the fact that this forum alone is full of people who are desperate to get their cars, it seems like it would have been more sensible to focus on getting all those cars delivered first, and perhaps just give each customer a chance to test drive it before pickup before taking it. If they want it, it's theirs; if not, it's not registered at that point so can either be returned or sold by the dealer maybe?

It's bizarre, especially when you consider there's actually reported to be something like 60 demonstrator cars - that's a fair proportion of the entire UK allocation,.

Perhaps I'm just bitter because I'm sitting here waiting for my car to be delivered to my dealer, but instead they seem to have prioritised the demo cars.

I have to agree. Whilst I feel that you folks with cars that have been in the UK for several months have been treated really, really badly with regards to the lack of communication, some of us are sitting here waiting for our cars to be built!! Hold on let me check.... er... no, still "order processing".

There is a good chance that some of the demo cars will be sold as ex-demos before we get our cars!

Yes, that's another thing - surely they can't sell the demos before every new customer has taken delivery? That would be a bit galling, sitting waiting for your new car while the ex-demos are being sold second hand. Especially for me, as I would happily have bought an ex-demo car again rather than buying new; I only bought new because I knew there was a tiny allocation.

So are they going to have to keep hold of them on forecourts for 2 years, until every new owner has had their car, and then sell them on?

It's Marketing. They'll have a fancy looking new (demo) sports car in the showroom, which makes their other cars more desirable to some buyers.
Was same with Yaris GR. I saw one inside a showroom of some really odd Toyota dealership several months ago - no point, not for sale, but it's there and everyone was like wow that looks nice, well done Toyota!

This is the advertising model for Rolex.

Yup, halo model. Good for business.

That thought does help me see that the demos might not be sold anytime soon..

But, less demo cars might move us people stuck at the order processing point up the build queue.

Maybe its a cheats way of bringing the GR86 numbers up.

if the 480 units max is true, then TUK now have 480 units + 60 (or whatever) number of demo’s. Thus they’ve fattened up the UK allocation.

Phoned as I was querying part ex as there'd be no movement and was thinking if it was too much hassle I may not do it. Did the link, was a faff doing the photos and gave it back to them so wait to see how much.

Asked for ETA and mine should be at dealer next week WC 5th

I don’t get all the secrecy (hopefully TUK have some valid reason for the obfuscation, I am an optimist 😂) at some point we will be able to see how many cars are registered in the U.K. via DVLA website 🤷‍♂️

I had a test drive in it yesterday, not sure if you’ve had one yet but if you give them a call I’m sure they’d book you in 👍
Yeah I will call them, I just thought there was a chance they might actually contact me like they previously said they would.

It's a real shame to have to write this, but after lots of to-ing and fro-ing, I have come to the decision to cancel my order. @AndyRC I am sorry to be leaving the Autozone! I have taken the (maybe stupid decision) to change jobs, and with it a hefty pay cut. This means realistically the GR86 becomes too much of financial risk. The job may also require overlanding travel, and it doesn't look particularly comfy sleeping in an '86.

I hope you all get and enjoy your cars. I hope to see many of you running about (or at a standstill on the M25) in the next few years. I'll try and park next to you in whatever it is I end up driving. (Probably a landcruiser lol)

Good luck in your new job @Adam... I'm actually thinking of a drastic career change too, but trying to hang on until at least weather so that I get a few good months in the '86!

That's a shame, that's one fewer GR86 that I might bump into in Kent :(
Good luck with the new job though.

Hi @Adam , at the end of the day it’s a car and there are lots of things I personally put far higher up the priority list. I wish you all the well in your new job, being happy at work / home is a much more important part of life. Thanks for all your help with the Owners Map , it would be great if you stick around , if not we will have to look for another custodian if you’re happy to handover to someone else. Good luck in your new job and hope it goes well, photos please of any interesting places you visit 👍😎

Thank you Andy! I'll be sure to try and remember you all, and all the help and support this community has given me. There may be some pics in the coming months of a camper conversion ;)!
